Pinckney Benedict is something else
Thanks to my creative writing professor, who loaned me this book (signed by Benedict), I now know one of the best short fiction writers living today. These stories are such a welcome depature from the abstract sentimentality that so many young writers are putting out these days. Benedict avoids all abstractions, keeping his fiction rooted in cold, hard, wonderful reality. The unsettling ...

Excellent Anthology
This anthology is a must-have. It explodes/expands surrealism (by grounding it), and it explodes/expands southern literature (by freeing it). Also, the line-up is first-rate: Andrew Hudgins, Joyce Carol Oates, Lee K Abbott, Laura and Pinckney Benedict, along with William Gay, Robert Olen Butler, Chris Offutt, and Rodney Jones. All rock stars, to my mind. But then there's the ...

A GREAT BOOK. PLAIN AND SIMPLE
THIS STORY IS EXCELLENT. Ingenius, Unique, Beautiful, Morbid, Sad, Uplifting, Violent, Depraved, even humorous at times. I hate when people say "For a first time novelist this was good". That is BS, every writer on the planet would PRAY to leave 1/2 the mark that this novel has. There is simply nothing else like it I have read. If you want to know my best way to describe it, it would be ...

Damn good stuff
Though he might seem a bit obscure to the casual reader, Pinckney Benedict is one of the finest writers of short fiction in the country. This here is his first collection, published when he was only twenty-three, and it's really something else. Stories like "All the Dead", "Dog", "Water Witch", and "Town Smokes", in the sheer audacity of the style in witch they're written as well as the ...
