Looking After Louis10 reviews
Lesley Ely

Albert Whitman & Company, 2004

My Autistic Son is a Lot Like Louis
I thought this book did a super job in conveying to kids the common traits of autism - parroting words they have just heard; seemingly staring at nothing; and not exactly playing with other children in the way that they are used to. Another parent of an autistic child interpreted the book as implying that Louis was not learning in the classroom. Me? I didn't infer that a bit! Many kids with ...

Dog Blue3 reviews

Candlewick, 2008

Ingeniously Simple
Young Bertie loves blue and he loves dogs. In the best of all scenarios, he'd combined his two loves and have a blue dog! The color blue is easy. Bertie has a blue sweater, blue shoes, and a blue collar. Blue dogs are at all not easy. In fact, getting a dog of any color is not easy, so Bertie just pretends he has one. As nimble and imaginative a toddler as you'll meet, Bertie walks and ...

Shoe Baby11 reviews
Joyce Dunbar

Walker Books Ltd, 2005

Wonderful children's book!
I originally stumbled upon this book at the library, but my son loved it so much (and I loved reading it to him), so we had to get a copy of our own. The artwork is mesmerizing, and the rhyme is clever and fun to read--and doesn't grate on me the way Green Eggs and Ham does after the fifth reading. I recommed this as a must-have for your baby's library.

Flyaway Katie4 reviews
Polly Dunbar

Walker Books Ltd, 2004

An imaginary delight!
This is such a charming story. Little Katie is feeling gray and what does she do, but add some color and splash to her day. The illustrations are bright and fun. And while you're enjoying the story, you're learning about colors and how to make the best of a gray day in a spunky, imaginative way. I'm reading this to my 18 month old already!

Penguin4 reviews

Candlewick, 2007

Adourable for toddlers +
I read this to my 2.5 year old last night (recommended reading after a bath, in jammies, snuggling outside) and she loved it. Although minimal in words, the pictures were very expressive, and my daughter could follow along easily. By the second reading, she told ME the story. Unlike the recommendation of starting with 4 year olds, definitely a hit with toddlers as well... although she didn't care ...

Here's A Little Poem: A Very First Book of Poetry9 reviews

Candlewick, 2007

Great 1st book of poetry
I bought the book for my four-year-old great-granddaughter. The poem choices are charming and the illustrations are delightful. I showed "Here's a Little Poem" to neighbors in the senior complex where I live and sold four more copies. Two of the buyers are retired primary teachers; one is a retired librarian; I am a retired Professor of English. We all agree that this is the perfect ...

Ely Lesley

Frances Lincoln Children's Books, 2008

The narrator of Measuring Angels hates school. It gets even worse when Sophie, a bully and a gossip, becomes her partner for a new science project: to make a sunflower grow. When Sophie snatches the seed and shoves it into the ground, the two girls argue and the little plant does not thrive. "That sunflower is not happy," says the teacher. So the two girls decide to make a cardboard angel to watch over the plant and help it grow. Will the ...
