A companion to the Haindl deck
Although I find the Haindl deck strikingly beautiful with its muted colors, natural textures and magic bubbles, it's not easy to read with this deck. Especially the court card (representing images from Egyptian, Indian, Native American and Keltic culture) were real barriers for me. After I read Pollack's book I found a way to enter the world of these cards. Still, they don't always "unlock" for ...

Incredible and inspiring
This tarot deck is the one I use above all my others, having done Tarot for over seven years. I spent a long time researching to find the perfect deck for me, and this is the one, using images and archetypes from nature rather than the material ones (eg. swords, knight of.., etc). It has been used constantly since that time and has been an invaluable guide. I cannot recommend it too highly.

Read This Book !
This is a great read that blurs the line between science fiction and fantasy genres! Others have tried melding the supernatural with science fiction (such as Poul Anderson in "Operation Chaos"), but with nowhere near the success of Rachel Pollack. Unlike some other writers, she obviously understands something about magical beliefs and rituals, and does a great job of imaginatively integrating ...

An excellent deck !
This deck is really good - it's very beutiful, unlike most other decks it's multicultural (American Indian, India Indian, Egyptian, Europe, etc), and loaded with symbols (Hebrew letters, runes, I Ching) that help a knowledgeable reader to give in-depth and broad readings. The deck is hard to read - especially to people who havent read with cards before or dont know the symbols - without the ...

Shining Tribe....not Shining Woman
If you find the wide assortment of Tarot decks confusing, you might want to consider working with materials prepared by Rachel Pollack. If you have a relatively novel understanding of Tarot, a Christian or Jewish background, and limited exposure to ethnographic concepts, Pollack's 78 DEGREES OF WISDOM is the place to begin your studies. Then take up her SHINING TRIBE. Pollack's 78 DG uses the ...

This is my favorite book on the minor arcana ever
Rachel Pollack does an outstanding job of helping both the beginner and the experienced better understand the meaning of the minor araca cards of the Rider-Waite tarot deck. It's the best of many that I have read!

beyond Orpheus..between Eros, Thanatos & the selfı
Godmother Night is now one of my favourite books & it's the most moving book I have read since Geek Love by Katherine Dunn. It's seemingly influenced by both the myth of Orpheus & Cocteau's film, Orphee, which also features a well-dressed woman who is literally death & is attended by motorcyclists. Readers interested in feminist, "women's" or lesbian fiction, as well as those attracted by ...

A great read!
I've been reading mysteries for 45 of my 60 years, and can usually see the end coming long before I get to it, but this one was a surprise. Actually two surprises :-) The explanatory parts woven into the story in part 2 that the editorial reviewer objected to I found necessary to make sense of the characters as this information was largely missing from my knowledge base. This sounds to me like ...

The Sage speaks through the tarot...
I refer to Ms. Pollack's brillant book, Seventy-eight Degrees of Wisdom, time and time again. It gives wonderful sight to the seeker, and speaks of the timeless connections to God & Universe through the study of the tarot. There is an eloquence in her writing that make for several AHA! moments, just great!!!

Great little tarot reference book
Well I bought this book to have a comprehensive tarot book that not only basic meanings for the tarot cards but also some more meaty writing and this book delivers. Written by one of the top tarot people of our time this book goes into history, different views on tarot, several different spreads, creating your own spreads, meditation and tarot, and creating your own deck among many other tarot ...

Non-Traditional Tarot
Rachael you've done it again! I never thought that you could surpass SEVENTY EIGHT DEGREES OF WISDOM but you did it with this one! The book goes beyond the terrestrial presentation of the cards and presents a unique (and long awaited) perspective for the Tarot community. Basically she says, in fact she screams between the lines "USE THE TAROT". Forget the hype, the type, the schools and the ...

Excellent adjunt to her book "78 Degrees of Wisdom"
The title of my review says it all. This is an attractive and well-written book and would make an excellent addition to any one's collection on Tarot. However, if you have never read her book "78 Degrees of Wisdom" you are missing out on one of the best Tarot books ever written. However, this book does take up some topics, such as Tarot and astrology, not as much discussed in "78 Degrees of ...

inner life
Typically I prefer only the Rider Waite deck of tarot. However, the Shinning Tribe deck has peaked my interest, and I find I am drawn to it almost daily. Rachel Pollack has included many myths and cultures to provide a wide view of the meaning(s) of the card. It is helpful in exploring and suggesting new paths to follow into one's inner life.

simply the best book on kabbalah
Rachel Pollack has written a book that I have read 5 times. I learn something new from this special Kabbalah book each time. I love it. I am Jewish and am proud of the Judaic system leading to kabbalahism.

What is life and what is dead? The Lukai seem to know...
Earthman Cooper and the Lukai. A primitive tribe lives in the ruins of a magical city. The Lukai get their clothes and food from automated systems and live in their own special bizarre world. Bizarre as well are their sexual habits, not to speak of their mysterious ceremonies. They believe life is an illusion, they look like they are the living dead, and maybe that's just what they are, in ...

The Geek: A comic book classic
I read Rachel Pollack's comic one shot 'The Geek' las year and have read it several times since. She has taken a forgotten DC comic character and written a powerful tale of humann beings overcoming tremendous evil. The story ties in with kabbalist and feminist spiritual beliefs. The Geek has an important mission in this story to save the Earth itself from chaos and destruction. For fans of ...

Deliciously irreverant
This book is a must-read for all feminists, Goddess-worshippers, and those interested in mythology and ancient history! It's an incredibly hilarious read, with a healthy tongue-in-cheek tone, an often-irreverant style, and fresh contemporary language. Far from espousing and propagating myths about goddesses being, as Ms. Robbins puts it, "the Virgin Mary with crystals," she really brings them ...

Essential companion to the deck!
WOW - I was skeptical that a single tarot deck could really be worth writing two full books about, but this book changed my mind! Rachel Pollack does an amazing job of conveying the richness and deep meaning that Haindl put into every single card in his deck. Essential reading if you have the deck, and will make you really want the deck if you don't have it!

Many tarot card readers will find this book an essential guide to really trully understanding the pleasent mystery involved in card readings. Rachel clearly explains how the cards in the tarot spread are interwoven and all combine to tell a story. Included in this guide are many examples of actual readings given by Rachel in her years of experience.
