The Brave Little Parrot 2 reviews Rafe Martin
Putnam Juvenile, 1998
A profound message for children and adults I can't speak highly enough of this book. Although endearing to children, its message is profound for all ages: If something is important to you, act, no matter what the odds of success. You never know what the outcome might be, or who might be inspired by your action. I remember "The Brave Little Parrot" when I think I can't be bothered to put a sign in my yard, write a senator, or speak out on ...

One Hand Clapping: Zen Stories For All Ages 4 reviews Rafe Martin, Manuela Soares
Rizzoli International Publications, 1995
Beautiful, Simple & Touching Book I read this book while sitting in a book store one day after not being able to put it down. It is a compilation of simplified tales and fables from the Zen perspective. Though this is a book intended for children I think many adults would appreciate this book to and this would make a great book to read to a child. The tales are very simple yet hold a lot of deep meaning and one could think ...

Awakening to Zen: The Teachings of Roshi Philip Kapleau 2 reviews Philip Kapleau
Shambhala, 2001
The Essential Guide For The New Student of Zen I was prepared to not like "Awakening to Zen" when it was given to me by one of my students. I was happily suprised to find the best book I had ever read on Zen Buddhism. Kapleau-Roshi addressed the concerns of the Western Zen Sangha, while stil maintaining a traditional Zen outlook. On a scale of 1-5, this could only be rated a ten!! Extremely Highly Recommended.

The Boy Who Lived with the Seals 1 review Rafe Martin
Putnam Juvenile, 1996
Majestic The boy who lived with the seals is enchanting and captivating. People consider this Native American lure but it is much more then that. It is full of tradition and culture. It is the mystic story from generations ago about a small boy that accepted the mysterious allure of the sea and it's sea life. The book is filled with majestic photos full of culture.
I recommend this book for American ...

Your Life is Waiting: The Average Joe's Guide to Overcoming Panic Attacks and Anxiety 3 reviews Rafe R. Martin
AuthorHouse, 2007
Panic attacks are getting better This is a great book for me because I can relate to the author. Some of the things he describes are exactly what I'm feeling. I'm using the approach he describes when fighting off a panic attack. It's getting easier to deal with panic attacks now. I'm looking forward to the day when panic attacks will be gone forever. Thanks for sharing your story.

Mysterious Tales of Japan 2 reviews Rafe Martin
Putnam Juvenile, 1996
spooky tales from Japan Mysterious Tales of Japan is an excellent read-aloud. In the first tale, a poor kindhearted fisherman saves the life of a sea turtle, is whisked away to an enchanted island, and marries a beautiful princess. It is only when the hero realizes he never said goodbye to his parents, that we discover this happy tale is now a ghost story. The humble fisherman has been away 300 years. Clinching ...

The Hungry Tigress: Buddhist Myths, Legends, and Jataka Tales 3 reviews Rafe Martin
Yellow Moon Press, 1999
Stories of depth and compassion The foundation of all these stories is kindness and compassion. They touch something deep inside that says "Ahh, this is right, this is how we should truely live." This is by far the best book of "childrens" stories I have ever read. I enjoyed them at least as much as my children.

The World Before This One 5 reviews Rafe Martin
Scholastic Paperbacks, 2005
Teaches life's lessons I enjoyed this book very much. It touched my heart and mind by teaching lessons that mean something today as much as they must have in "The World Before This One." Certainly a worthwhile read - and then some.

Will's Mammoth 4 reviews Rafe Martin
Putnam Juvenile, 1989
An Illustration is Worth a 1,000 Words! Will's Mammoth is a wonderful picture book, with a good story line. I have used this book to help children learn the writing process. In the current classroom (2nd grade)we are doing a unit on dinosaurs and I read Will's Mammoth to the children and then showed the illustrations. I had the children look close to the details of the illustrations and then they wrote discriptive sentences about ...

The Shark God 4 reviews Rafe Martin
Topeka Bindery, 2007
My 6 year old son loves this story!!! My son picked "The Shark God" as a reward for a reading challenge at his elementary school. He has requested this story be read and reread to him multitudes of times and has yet to tire of it. The story provides him a glimpse into a culture that he would not otherwise get. When we get to the page featuring the shark god, my son's eyes are big with awe. I like how Rafe Martin made changes to ...

Foolish Rabbit Ms San 1 review Rafe Martin
Putnam Juvenile, 1991
Folklore at its best; an unfamiliar version of a classic. For fans of folklore, this book is a treasure trove. It contains the ancient echoes of the familiar story of Henny Penny or Chicken Little, but with a kinder, more positive ending, in which no animals are eaten by any other animals. The illustrations are vivid and evocative. My favorites are one VERY close-up view of a lion and another of his paws as he stamps the ground. There is also a ...

The Monkey Bridge 2 reviews Rafe Martin, Fahimeh Amiri
Knopf Books for Young Readers, 1997
A Wonderful Tale Don't read the School Library Journal's review. There were no Muslims during the time that the Buddha lived. This is a wonderful tale that teaches children what the words love and compassion mean. The monkey king is willing to go to great lengths to save his followers. The human king learns what it means to be a caring individual. Every child that I've given this book to or read this story to ...

The Rough-Face Girl 26 reviews Rafe Martin
Putnam Juvenile, 1992
Can you see him? "Wretched" might be the biggest difference between the Algonquin Indian Cinderella and European Cinderellas. Over 1500 versions have been collected throughout the world. They have in common the themes that justice will prevail and evil will be punished. These are the common denominators, no matter where the story may be set.
"The Rough-Face Girl" takes place along the shores of Lake Ontario. ...

Birdwing 19 reviews Rafe Martin
Arthur A. Levine Books, 2005
Beautiful and magical - a special book (but not meant for everyone) Birdwing is an interesting story. It is based on the Brothers Grimm story The Six Swans. Six brothers are turned into swans. Their sister remains silent for six years to save them. When she does, the youngest brother's left arm remains a wing. That's where the Grimm story ends and Birdwing begins.
This is a story of adventure, self-realization and kindness. It moves at a steady pace with just ...

Twelve Months 1 review Rafe Martin
Fitzhenry and Whiteside, 2007
Very Nice Retelling of Russian Folk Tale I'm a big fan of Rafe Martin and this is one of my favorite books he's written. The tale is somewhat like Cinderella without the prince. A mean aunt and cousin plot to do away with an orphan by making her do impossible tasks. The twelve months assist her in doing the impossible which enrages her relatives. This is a good book to do in the fall. It teaches the 12 months, seasons, apples and ...

Animal Dreaming Rafe Martin
Yellow Moon Press, 1992
This is our second tape with Rafe, and one whose message is timely. In clear and eloquent language, Rafe tells stories from times in his life when he has felt linked to the natural world. They express a deep yearning to reestablish our connection to our origins in nature, and a sense of urgency--for this connection will help us all survive. The stories range from an encounter with two belugas at an aquarium, to a haunting story of cows that ...
