Who Guards a Prince (Felony & Mayhem Mysteries)2 reviews
Reginald Hill

Felony & Mayhem Press, 2005

Unexpected plot from Reginald Hill
If you are familiar with the Dalziel and Pascoe books this book will really surprise you. It will also frighten you. What if it really could happen? The heroes and the villains are very believable. It makes for a true thriller. I enjoyed it.

Pictures of Perfection (Dalziel and Pascoe Mysteries)21 reviews
Reginald Hill

Dell, 1995

Do exactly as I say and nobody gets hurt
This is my favorite mystery novel. Period. Seriously, just take my word for it. DO NOT read any reviews. DO NOT read the book jacket. DO NOT so much as glance at a blurb. It wouldn't be any fun if you knew anything (let alone everything) about what happens, right? Right. So Step 1: Start reading the novel. Now, you might find yourself thinking, But this isn't my kind of mystery at all. Which ...

Death Comes for the Fat Man (Dalziel and Pascoe Mysteries)29 reviews
Reginald Hill

Harper, 2008

Great read
I enjoyed this book very much. I have a decent vocabulary and found myself looking up words frequently. Not usually true in a "mystery". I think, to really enjoy this to the fullest, one should be familiar with the series to understand the relationships. This series in one of my very favorites, for its plot, writing and humor. Love the characters.

Recalled to Life (Dalziel and Pascoe Mysteries)7 reviews
Reginald Hill

Dell, 1993

English language, British humor at its best...
Reginald Hill's books on Dalziel/Pascoe make me laugh. One of the best things that can be said about any author is that they make you laugh! If they can do it while spinning a pretty good plot in the mystery genre, they have my admiration. Hill's cop-duet are an odd couple. I know the prevalence of 'odd couples' in mysteries has been done and overdone, but Hill brings a breath of fresh air to the ...

The Spy's Wife9 reviews
Reginald Hill

Felony & Mayhem, 2006

Highly satisfying yarn
"The Spy's Wife" is ostensibly a mystery story, but it turns out to be more of a character study--with the subject of the title front and center throughout. This turns the piece into something more than a typical Cold War espionage potboiler. The novel's focus is on Molly Keatley, the badly betrayed wife of an alleged British turncoat, who evolves from a relatively passive soul at the moment of ...

A Pinch of Snuff5 reviews
Reginald Hill

Dell, 1990

The early books are good, but this is where it really takes off
In the fifth book of the series, Dalziel and Pascoe have been working together long enough to have formed a good partnership. So Peter Pascoe is surprised when Dalziel dismisses a lead Pascoe is given on a porn film that may be more than it seems. Pascoe's dentist is convinced that one scene in the current offering at the local private film club was not achieved by special effects, but showed a ...

The Roar of the Butterflies3 reviews
Reginald Hill

Harper, 2008

Perfect summer read - and great for winter too!
Most readers know Reginald Hill for his Dalziel and Pascoe books, and very good they are too. The Joe Sexsmith series showcases the lighter side of this wonderful crime writer. In this book Sexsmith, a somewhat tubby middle-aged black PI, is asked to help a popular local golf-club member fight the allegation that he cheated during an important match. Sounds like a minor problem to Joe, but while ...

Death of a Dormouse (Felony & Mayhem Mysteries)4 reviews
Reginald Hill

Felony & Mayhem, 2006

An Early Gem from Reginald Hill
"Death of a Dormouse" is one of the Reginald Hill early mysteries now being reprinted in the "Felony and Mayhem Mysteries." This book is intricately and convincingly plotted and definitely falls into the "page-turner" category. It's hard to put down. Unlike Hill's later books that feature a detective team, "Death of a Dormouse" is the story of a timid and passive woman seriously wronged by her ...

The Wood Beyond (Dalziel and Pascoe Mysteries)12 reviews
Reginald Hill

Dell, 1997

Near perfect crime novel!
I have been reading my way through the Dalziel and Pascoe series. This is the fifteenth or so book in the series. These books are all good, but this one is as nearly perfect as a crime novel gets. In it Hill weaves two mysteries together with winding silken threads. One of the murders is in the present day, but one dates back to the time of the Great War. And as Pascoe pursues his ...

An Advancement of Learning: #2 Dalziel & Pascoe mystery (Dalziel & Pascoe)5 reviews
Reginald Hill

Felony & Mayhem, 2008

One of the gems from the early days
Some of Hill's earliest novels don't really compare to some of his later ones, but this is one of a couple of absolutely cracking exceptions. It's got a wonderfully complex plot, some brilliant characters, a great setting, some surprising twists, and it is written wonderfully. Plus, Franny Roote is one of the best villains Hill has ever created. This one, indeed, is essential reading for those ...

A Clubbable Woman (Felony & Mayhem Mysteries)9 reviews
Reginald Hill

Felony & Mayhem, 2007

Start here, read them in order and enjoy! Series list included!
Hill's Dalziel and Pascoe series starts here. A Clubbable Woman is the first in the series, and generally continues to improve throughout the series. The upronounceable Dalziel (Dee-el)is the Chief Inspector: apparently crude and ill mannered, he is the active force in the partnership, if active is defined as the rush of an enraged bull, demanding beyond reason and totally unsuited for ...

Death's Jest-Book19 reviews
Reginald Hill

Avon, 2004

A Masterpiece of Death, Beddoes and Detective Stories
I am not surprised that so many fans find this book disappointing; I must state that when I read it first, I was of the same mind. And a more mature re-reading with Dialogues of the Dead first, I changed my mind. First of all, let's take Dialogues, obviously, the two books are part of the same soil, sprouting trees at different times but close to each other, is so good, that it dazzles. ...

Child's Play (Dalziel & Pascoe Novel)3 reviews
Reginald Hill

HarperCollins Publishers Ltd, 1988

This is a really good read!
I'm flabbergasted that nobody has chosen to review this book before. This is my first exposure to Mr. Hill's writing and I am impressed. Hill is an English writer of detective mystery fiction. This book is one in a series that revolves around the workings of a pair of policemen based in Northern England, one of whom is a Rabelaisian, dyed in the wool Yorkshireman, the other a University ...

On Beulah Height (Dalziel and Pascoe Mysteries)28 reviews
Reginald Hill

Dell, 1999

Disturbing, moving, and well worth the time
One of the more disturbing books in the Dalziel and Pascoe series, in part because of the theme of serial child killing, but also because it shows that there are no easy answers. It's a complex and thought-provoking story, and one that easily supports re-reading. There is the mystery, yes, but there is also the psychological study of a village traumatised both by a series of unsolved child ...

Arms and the Women (Dalziel and Pascoe Mysteries)23 reviews
Reginald Hill

Dell, 2000

Totally an original!
Hill has mastered the trick of keeping a long-running series fresh and interesting. This book is like no other. Hill focuses on Ellie, Pascoe's wife in this one, and Andy and Pascoe play almost bit parts. He has created a beautiful setting, and the whole book centers around how the old decaying estate on the Yorkshire coast is reclaimed by the sea. It also is held together by a story that ...

Bones and Silence (Dalziel and Pascoe Mysteries)11 reviews
Reginald Hill

Dell, 1991

Mystery play come mystery novel
This is one novel, I couldn't put down and finished in a little over a day. Hill has a great style. It was been sometime that I novel had me reaching for a dictionary to look up definitions. The Yorkshire dialect was just perfect. The characters are well drawn and the plot winds in on itself just enough. I am looking forward to reading other Reginald Hill novels.

Dialogues of the Dead40 reviews
Reginald Hill

Avon, 2003

Return to the Hill
For some reason, I stopped reading Hill a few years back. And while I've missed him, I'm glad I did. I have several books now that I can read in succession and simply overdose on this dazzling writer. I knew from the outset who the Wordman was ... or so I thought. I read the last chapter late one night and saved the last bit for the next night. My ego took a blow when I learned late the next ...

Under World (Dalziel and Pascoe)3 reviews
Reginald Hill

HarperCollins Publishers Ltd, 2000

A Very Good Book in a Great Series!
I have been faithfully writing reviews on each the Dalziel and Pascoe series in order to try to get people interested in this great series. It's extremely well-written. amd the characterization is wonderful. This is the tenth book in the series, and one of the best. We get a first hand look at the life that coal miners and families of coal miners lead. Hill presents this life with compassion ...

Good Morning, Midnight12 reviews
Reginald Hill

Avon, 2005

A satisfying return to form for Hill
I was glad to see this book come out and even happier to read it. The past few Reginald Hill books in the Dalziel and Pascoe series have been entirely too cerebral for a simple sot like me and I started to actually resent Reginald Hill for ramming home his blinding intellect so fiercely. He must have gotten that out of his system, because in "Good Morning, Midnight", we have a really nifty, ...
