Manga Shakespeare: Hamlet (Manga Shakespeare)4 reviews
William Shakespeare, Richard Appignanesi, ...

Abrams Books for Young Readers, 2007

Amazingly good!
It is difficult to adequately express how amazing this was. It's all the spoken parts of Hamlet as Shakespeare wrote them, spoken by characters in a comic book. It is set in the future, in space, where Denmark is it's own planet or something. This doesn't change the story, since characters are positioned the same to one another. Personalities and stories aren't time specific like clothes ...

Praise for Manga Shakespeare ALA Best Book for Young Adults ALA Quick Pick for Reluctant Young Adult Readers “Reluctant readers who appreciate manga and who would not think of picking up the work of Shakespeare are sure to gravitate toward these titles. Even if the text puts them off, they will be drawn to the illustrations. These adaptations would make wonderful additions to any school or public library’s manga ...

Introducing Existentialism, 3rd Edition (Introducing...(Totem))1 review
Richard Appignanesi

Totem Books, 2006

Not an Introduction
I recently became a big fan of the Introducing series, but I'll have to say that this book is both frustrating and disappointing. I do not know much about Existentialism (hence why I bought the book) but I can point to what appear to be some problems with the book with what little I know. For example, the book spends a lot of time concentrating on Husserl, who is arguably not an existentialist ...

Freud for Beginners5 reviews
Richard Appignanesi, Oscar Zarate

Pantheon, 2003

Sometimes a Book is just a Book
This book is just a book, but a better book than its successor of the same title by Richard Osborne. Mostly because it does not hang onto the relationship between Jung and Freud as long and focuses more on the theories of Freud. In fact, what I really enjoyed about this book is that gave a good round about summary of most of Freuds theories inside each book. Certainly acts a good stepping stone ...

Introducing Postmodernism, Third Edition (Introducing)16 reviews
Richard Appignanesi

Totem Books, 2005

clear introduction to a confusing topic
Introducing Postmodernism is a basic introduction to Postmodern thought. As it is a basic introduction, it does not go very far into depth on any one aspect of Postmodern thought. Still, it clearly represents the main aspects of Postmodernism namely, legitimization, reproducibility and hyper reality. Before reading this book I had no idea what Postmodernism was, now at least I have some idea. The ...

Manga Shakespeare: Romeo and Juliet (Manga Shakespeare)6 reviews
William Shakespeare, Richard Appignanesi, ...

Abrams Books for Young Readers, 2007

Pretty cool. My daughters love it..
I bought this for my admittedly hyper-literate daughters (10-14) who are currently fixated on both manga and Shakespeare. The graphics in the book are very well done and the story is straight from the bard. It's a great way for kids to dig a little deeper into very rich material. Highly recommended.

Introducing Cultural Studies (Beginners)3 reviews
Ziauddin Sardar, Borin Van Loon, ...

Totem Books, 1998

LIGHT ESSAY OF CULTURAL STUDIES
Ziauddin Sardar's "Introduction to Cultural Studies" is nothing more than the title indicates. This lenghty essay merely presents basic concepts that are prevalent in a postmodern discourse between societal values, power relations, and the value placed on cultural "norms" given in various communities. Sardar presents the history of Cultural Studies as a discipline, which begins in a social ...

Introducing Time (Introducing...(Totem))6 reviews
Craig Callender, Ralph Edney

Totem Books, 2001

Proof that "Time" is interpretive, thus not understandable--
I purchased this book because I hoped to gain a deep or profound insight about Time from educated, intellectual minds. And while I did in fact achieve this goal, it was not thru the manner that I expected. I support the entire "Introducing..." series by Totem because their illustrations along with genuine, serious educational content make the books highly appealing, attractive and inspiring. ...

Introducing Semiotics (Beginners)5 reviews
Paul Cobley, Litza Jansz, ...

Totem Books, 1997

A splendid place to start!
Introducing Semiotics does just that, it INTRODUCES the topic, head thinkers, facets of thought, etc., to the reader (one would assume the reader a casual one, not brought to reading this by a graduate course). It is a fair and thorough evaluation of what semiotics IS and what it IS NOT. It does everything I believe it sets out to do, and it is a great read for everyone, even one who already ...

Introducing Philosophy (Foundations in Children's Ministry)11 reviews
Dave Robinson, Judy Groves

Totem Books, 1999

The view from 40,000 feet - nifty and useful
I agree with the positive comments by other reviewers. The book is unclear in a few places, but a visit to Wikipedia can fill in the gaps. I also agree that Gaarder's novel "Sophie's World" provides a much better explanation and discussion, especially for newcomers to philosophy. But this book covers more ideas and ties more things together. Both books show the big picture of ideas appearing ...

Introducing Jung, 2nd Edition5 reviews
Maggie Hyde, Michael McGuinness

Totem Books, 2001

Excellent Study Guide
Introducing Jung is not the only book I have from totem's "Introducing" series, but it is one of my favorites. It clearly presents many of the ideas that may be glossed over in your intro to psych class. Like all the "Introducing" books, it is not too muddled with details but rather serves as an excellent jumping off point for research in a subject you may be unfamiliar with. The drawings are ...

Introducing Quantum Theory16 reviews
J. P. McEvoy, Oscar Zarate

Totem Books, 1996

The contradiction of classic physics explained (the one with the cat that is half dead half alive).
Quantum theory is the abstract solution to the problem of the quantities and states of energy on the quantum scale (subatomic levels) in a system. Quantum theory is proved using a form of mathematics called `quantum mechanics'. Quantum theory and mechanics verified subatomic systems for the first time at the start of the 20th century. Atomic models are brand new things Classical physics since ...

Introducing Post-modern-ism: a Graphic Guide to Cutting-edge Thinking
Richard Appignanesi, Chris Garratt, ...

Totem Books, 2005

"Regularly conrtoversial, rarely straightforward and seldom easy, postmodernism is nonetheless a thrilling intellectual adventure. "Introducing Postmodernism" is the ideal guide."
