A Great Read Aloud for President's Day!
This easy reader is a delightful story to share with all students. The information gained about President Washington is unforgettable. Children will love that George named his dog "Sweetlips" and they won't forget that he was super kind and honest to one of his enemies! This book will be a staple in classrooms across the country and this true story of George may replace his "Cherry Tree" tale.

History at its Best
All but one of the other reviewers has given this book a four or five star rating. There is a reason. This is an exceptionally well-written book that covers a broad range of topics. Most military historians pick one type of warfare--ground, naval, or air combat--and focus on that area, even if they look at a number of different wars. Guadalcanal does not lend itself to such a focus. It was ...

This is clearly one of the best investment books written. The title belies the breadth of valuable market knowledge the book offers students of the markets.

This book should be required reading for all Americans and Japanese
It is easy today, with so much information out there about the horrors of atomic warfare, and so little remembrance of the actual history of the final stages of WWII, to be critical of the U.S. decision to drop two atomic bombs on Japan. Sadly, as a result, most Japanese are taught today that they were merely the victims of overwhelming American might, rather than the aggressors and ...

The book is great for what it is
All of the books in this series take one personality trait of a famous person and talk about it. The trait they chose for Jefferson was that he liked to eat. The fact that the "feast" happened over several parties as opposed to one meal is not an important enough piece of "fiction" to justify saying that the book is bad. The book does not talk about Slavery. That is covered in the book about ...

FANTASTIC BOOK!!!
I love this book! I love how the author makes Babe come alive for kids. I am a teacher and have read this book to my class. All of my students loved hearing it and have read it again and again. We really felt like we got to know Babe and looked up to him so much more than we already did!!! Frank Murphy does an excellent job telling the sad story of baseball and how it did almost die, but he ...

Our new favorite PC book
My entire gaming group reached a consensus: this book is our new favorite book for core classes in DnD 3.5. First off, a cautionary note: DM's WILL want to read this before letting their player with all the disposable income roll up a character from this book, as its systems are complicated and the character abilities have been created almost whole-cloth. In general, we've found the classes ...

"The Best Short Stories by Black Writers" is a #1 classic!
This book is an excellent example of reality. In each short story, there is some kind of relivance of growing up in a nation filled with crime, love, kindenss, hardships, and friendships. The writers express themselves so wonderfully, vivid pictures of the events are played in my head. It keeps middle-school children very attentive, mainly because they can easily relate to the troubles of ...

Great Intro to Social Democratic Economics
As taught in most undergraduate courses, the world of mainstream economics is an orderly place where markets clear, economic actors are rational, and social harmony prevails. Readers wanting more realism should read "Understanding Capitalism," a superb introduction to economics written from a social democratic perspective. As in any introductory econ text, the book carefully analyzes market ...

Finally, facts over opinion.
This is a terrific book for those who have been searching for truth about golf clubs. The authors have developed a mathematical model of the golf club and have used computers to analyze innumerable combinations of head speed, center or gravity, club loft, club length, etc. They have come up with an analysis of what is important and what doesn't matter in golf club design. Here's what works for ...

Five star review for a five-star general
When there are multi-volume biographies running 800 to 900 pages each, what can be said about Douglas MacArthur in 198 pages? Read Richard Frank's excellent book and find out. He's crammed at least 12 pounds into a 10-pound bag, providing a taut, concise examination of one of the dominant military figures of the 20th century. Frank's forte' is objectivity: at the end of the book you don't ...

Review of set more than specific volume
Let me start by saying that I have owned the full 12-volume set for about a year and use it quite frequently as a resource. I've used this particular volume as a reference, but have not taught through a book using this commentary yet. However, as there seem to be no competent reviews on the set as a whole, I did want to add my impressions of this terrific resource. I can say that I'm very ...

Unique in the good way
Unlike "Skills and Powers" and "Combat and Tactics", "Spells and Magic" does not introduce a wholly new set of rules that the other two books in the series are infamous for. "Spells and Magic" so rarely deviates from the original rules and presents so much expanded materials ( rather than totally new), you will soon be immersed into the originality of the effort. While this is basically a ...

A truly fascinating and perceptive survey
Ever Against The Stream: The Politics Of Karl Barth, 1906-1968 is an impressive and informative survey drawn from the many speeches and letters of Karl Barth, a man who spoke loudly against National Socialism in Germany and Switzerland, and who confronted enemies among those in the churches in Switzerland who wanted to give the state more absolute power over its citizenry. A truly fascinating and ...
