It takes a genius to make it simple
Feynman picks the thing that is simplest in the quantum world, a single particle, and explains it using no math. Instead of equations, the quantum theory in this book consists entirely of pictures. But this is not a popularization in the usual sense. This is not gossip about science. This actually is quantum theory in a very simple case. For anyone who wants to know how the universe is put ...

curious indeed
This is a wonderful read....a chance to listen to a great scientist with a wonderful quirky mind. It is all interesting, some of it very touching, but the part on the investigation of the Challenger explosion is a classic study in bureaucratic malingering.

"Principia" for our times
Isaac Newton wrote "Principia" in the 1600's, and it was the definitive book on Physics, although it is basically unreadable. (Now, of course, it is also slightly outdated.) Feynman has done a better and much more complete job than Newton himself. Having said this, this is NOT a book for the layman. It appears simple: heavily conceptual, few equations, no homework problems at the end of each ...

Exhilirating
I read the entire book back in college. The approach to explaining quantum mechanics was so different from the other books I read back then. The derivation of the rotation matrices, the discussion of symmetry and superconductivity, among others, were simply breathtaking. Definitely a classic.

A very different book.
In this series of lectures and interviews, Feynman lays out his, sometimes surprisingly philosophical given his aversion to such things, outlook on science, religion, and life in general. As an added bonus, you get a lecture or two on his "absurd and crazy" ideas, like nanotechnology, that give you a real feel what Feynman was about. This book held a lot of credibility with me. First, Feynman was ...

Feynman on Feynman
My main motivation for reading "Perfectly Reasonable Deviations" was to gain further insight into Feynman's personality and value system by the direct and reliable method of studying verbatim his interactions with other people. He has been so thoroughly enshrined (perhaps not unwillingly) as a brilliant, difficult, puckish character that I couldn't help being a bit puzzled about what he was ...

General relativity as a quantum gauge field theory.
Feynman gave a series of lectures on gravitation at a graduate seminar at Caltech in 1962. The lectures were recorded and transcribed by Morinigo and Wagner. A very readable introduction on quantum gravity was added by the editor, Brian Hatfield (whose book on quantum field theory and strings, I also recommend.) This is the only book I've seen which develops GR from a quantum field theory ...

Physics by two of the very best!
As usual, the best physics books are short and to the point, as is this one. The two Dirac lectures may serve as a perfectly good mini physics course all by themselves. I always enjoy a Feynman lecture, and this is no exception. He cuts to the chase without sacrificing the plot. But, I must say, in this case the Wienberg lecture is the better of the two. Weinberg's style has a particular ...

The Greatest Physics Tutorial Ever Written
Feynman doesn't just teach physics in these books: he teaches you to think like a physicist should. One complaint I've heard is that there's not enough math in them. "Too many words." (Kinda reminds you of Armadeus.) There are plenty of books that have the math. These books offer insight -- something that is very hard to come by in formal physics education. The introductory material in ...

Use with the Feynman Lectures (Red Books) - 3 Volume Set
As other reviewers have stated this series has a few problems. The first is that the audio was copied from audio tapes as one long CD track without partitions which is a huge pain. The lectures are also all jumbled up into "topic areas", and the listener is left to align them to the chapters in the Feynman Lectures on Physics (the sections to which the commentator on the CD's refers are in these ...

Feynman never got out of his box, because he never had one!
Part physicist, part prankster, part musician, part teacher, part genius, part story teller, part little boy and all human being, this is the true story of Richard Feynman. He was a man with an insatiable curiosity, and had a zest to explore the world of physics, human nature and himself. The stories in the book are funny, entertaining and enlightening. Feynman never got out of his box, ...

Shake the Hand that Shook the Hand of John L. Sullivan...
(...I once took a course at Stanford and its instructor had once worked at CalTech. I once mentioned my interest in Richard Feynman to her and this led to her recounting her real-life encounters with him. Notably, she english-teacherly entoned "he definitely had something." By meeting with this english professor, I in effect did touch the hand that shook the hand of Richard P. Feynman. ) ...

Highly recommended
This book is my choice for the best read of 2005. Feynman's letters are fascinating, touching, sometimes challenging, frequently very funny. I expected to be quite bored with a book consisting only of letters, but I was completely wrong! Every letter is there for a reason and because Feynman corresponded with laymen, as well as fellow scientists and a host of institutions, there is a lot of ...

Letters of a genius with Asperger Syndrome
This book complements the other biographical and (semiauto)biographical works on Richard Feynman. In many ways we see him more intimately than ever before. I once read a book describing the Roman Catholic Church as a struggle between saints and cardinals. (I would love to refind this book.) The cardinals were the guardians of orthodoxy, the saints broke new ground. The cardinals often ...

Not for beginnners!
As a Feynman fan and layperson with a reasonable understanding of his work I found this book lost me before I was halfway into the first chapter. It looks good coursework material and from what I can tell is packed with amazing amounts of information. But without a strong fundamental grounding in basic physics this book will remain on your bookshelf.

Although this is volume 5 of the lectures on tape, it is his earliest audio lectures. This set is the one to have! In this set, Dr. Feynman covers the basics of kinematics. insightful observations
Let's be clear about one thing. Most if not all of the chapters in this book have appeared in various places before. Richard Feynman has been dead 20 years, and nothing here is newly discovered material. However, it does provide an insight into a gifted mind, who was also eloquent with the written word. One chapter has been famous in computing for decades. "There's Plenty of Room at the ...

R.P. Feynman was more than just a physicist with a staggering intuitive understanding of the machinery of complex equations and physical laws, he was also very human and sane and filled with simple awe at the natural world. Brilliant, inspirational, and VERY funny!
There can be no argument that Richard P Feynman was a genius. He has been a hero of mine since I was very young, probably because my father also greatly admires him and spoke to me about Feynman and his unique personality from time to time. There are some great stories in this book and they will make you laugh out loud. Feynman was always so full of life and he was curious about absolutely ...
