Willem de Kooning: Paintings3 reviews
David Sylvester, Richard Shiff, ...

National Gallery Washington, 1994

Rich, colorful, and insightful
This is probably the best book about Willem De Kooning on the market. Along with a multitude of color plates David Sylvester offers historical, technical, and philisophical insights about Willem De Kooning and his life works. The large format makes viewing the artists works very enjoyable. The reading is not overly complicated as it paints a full portrait of the artist, his accomlishments, his ...

I Hope You Die Soon6 reviews
Richard Sylvester

Non-Duality Press, 2006

Clarity with a funnybone.
There's nowhere in this easy-to-read book that allows even the tiniest space for the "persn" to go to hide out or even take a moment's rest. The author is relentless. Clearly, consistently and funnily driving home again and again the point that there is no real person. Let's all join the land of the living dead! Enough wasting time with all these high-maintenance "personalities"--let's die soon.

The Book of No One1 review
Richard Sylvester

Non-Duality Press, 2008

See Through the Mind's Wonderful Stories
PLAYFUL BOLDNESS: Richard Sylvester uses language with playful boldness. Look at the titles of his two books: I Hope You Die Soon (originally rejected by Hallmark Cards publishing) and The Book of No One. The latter is a play on Dennis Waite's The Book of One and firms-up the current stand-off between traditional advaita and neo-advaita. Traditional advaita, represented by Waite's ...

Moura: The Dangerous Life of the Baroness Budberg2 reviews
Nina Berberova

NYRB Classics, 2005

Over the Samovar
You've got to take this one in the right spirit. Berberova isn't a terribly good writer--discursive, disorganized, fatally susceptible to digression from almost any direction. Morever she doesn't seem particularly to like her subject--a failing perhaps more common among biographers than you might at first guess. So, as biography, not a delight. But as conversation--my, this is wonderful. ...

Thomas More's Prayer Book: A Facsimile Reproduction of the Annotated Pages (Elizabethan Club Series)2 reviews
St. Thomas More

Yale University Press, 1969

Accept no false copies...
Sir Thomas More was an outstanding figure of England during the beginning of the Tudor Renaissance times, that really flourished in the following generation under Elizabeth. More was Lord Chancellor of England under Henry VIII, following Wolsey, during a truly turbulent times. Henry was finalising his break with the Roman church and trying to legitimise his ill-fated marriage with Anne Boleyn. ...

The Yale Edition of The Complete Works of St. Thomas More: Volume 2, The History of King Richard III (The ...1 review
St. Thomas More

Yale University Press, 1963

Wonderful as literature, misleading as history.
This book deals with the times of Richard III, perhaps the most contraversial of English kings. More describes him as a dark villain without a conscience, who set before himself a desire of the crown and waded through a sea of blood of his innocent victims to get it. Even though this book is titled "The History", it cuts off abruptly in the sixth month of Richard's two-year reign. But there ...

Getting Around Town in Russian: Situational Dialogs1 review
Richard Sylvester, Lora Paperno

Slavica Publishers, 1988

Getting Around Town in Russian
This is not a book intended for beginners. It contains no grammar explanations and no glossary. The translation tries to make clear what each line means, rather than how it is constructed. Thus we sidestep grammatical and syntactical questions. The dialogs have worked well with students in their fourth or fifth semester. They can also be useful to graduate students, exchange scholars, and anyone ...
