Twisted Tales from Shakespeare21 reviews
Richard Willard Armour

Signet, 1966

laughs from the past
Even my favorite bookstore can't find me this one. I hadn't thought of this book in years; my 14-year-old son had an assignment to rewrite the balcony scene from Romeo and Juliet, and it reminded me of this book. I must find it for him. I have always loved Shakespeare and deplore what passes for literature these days, so my recommendation for this book may seem odd, but this book is a must-read ...

Our Presidents1 review
Richard Willard Armour

Woodbridge Press Publishing Company, 1983

Charming poetry & pictures, ideal for kids, fun for everyone
Richard Armour's simple, entertaining book (with memorable illusrations by Leonard Everett Fisher) is a great introduction to American political history -- fun for the newcomer and the expert alike. Even many years later, whenever the name of an obscure President is mentioned, one of Mr. Armour's quotes is likely to pop to mind (such as, regarding Franklin Pierce, "the most that most remember, ...

It All Started With Columbus, Being 961-4 reviews
Richard Willard Armour

McGraw-Hill, 1961

When History Cross-breeds with Humor
This book is, quite simply, a masterpiece of American humor. However, the same can be said of most of Richard Armour's books, including such classics as "It All Started With Marx," "English Lit Relit," "Twisted Tales From Shakespeare" (with its classic description of Hamlet entering 'with his nose in a book, perhaps to keep his place'), and of course "The Classics Reclassified." This is the ...

Richard Willard, Armour

McGraw-Hill, 1955

undubiously magnificently satirical!!! A MUST READ
armour gives the funniest description of at past 2000 years of European history. This book contains never-heard-before satires and burlesques that remarkebly outlines history. Drawings are appropriate and unquestionably humorous. I wish I could purchase this book from amazon if they had it!!

Delicious Send-up of Literature Textbooks
One lady I know told me that reading THE CLASSICS RECLASSIFIED helped her get a good score on the GRE. Armour presents, in each chapter, an accurate but hilarious synopsis of a book that often appears on required reading lists for English classes. At the end of each chapter are questions on the book, but probably not the questions most English teachers would ask. For example, among the ...

On Your Marks: A Package of Punctuation,1 review
Richard Willard, Armour

McGraw-Hill, 1969

A Package of Punctuation
Those who pepper their prose heavily with commas, dashes, and exclamation points, as well as those who are stingy with them, will find guidance and fun. Ogdan Nash writes in the forward: " the rhymes are terse and memorable, the reasons clearly stated and easy to comprehend....

Richard Armour's Punctured Poems: Famous First and Infamous Second Lines2 reviews
Richard Willard Armour

Woodbridge Press Publishing Company, 1982

Armour does it again!
I'm big into poetry and Richard Armour books. My dad found this book and brought it home and I read it cover to cover at one sitting. Boy was it funny. And now I can't hear the line "Water water everywhere" without thinking of Armour's second line - "the plumbing badly needs repair"!

The Classics Reclassified, In Which Certain Famous Books Are Not So Much Digested As Ingested, Together with ...4 reviews
Richard Willard Armour

McGraw-Hill, 1960

A great followup to Twisted Tales from Shakespeare
This is a wonderful volume of literary humor that really should be back in print. Going through famous fictional works (including yet another Shakespeare), Armour goes through the work of fiction and, taking things to an illogical extreme, presents a very funny take on these classics. This book is hilarious, particularly, of course, if you've read the original work in question.
