Excellent in depth experiments
As one of the other reviewers wrote, this book has much more than what you would get with a typical chemistry "toy" kit. Everything is well explained in detail, from the level of quality and what equipment to buy, where to obtain chemicals, and the steps for each experiment. The experiments have a full explanation of process being investigated, questions and calculations to make real ...
The Calcium Lie: What Your Doctor Doesn't Know Could Kill You
1 review

Truly a book that will change (and extend) your life!
Having had a chance to read an advance copy of "The Calcium Lie," I can say that the ideas contained in this book truly changed the way that I look at a number of important aspects of my health -- nutrition, vitamins, and the way I listen to the well-intentioned advice of "the medical establishment." After reading "The Calcium Lie" it is very clear to me that when it comes to the amount of ...

If you liked the movie, you'll love the book
Did the movie leave you begging for more? Well, there are the sequels, but this story is the strongest one, and the book gives you all the extras that would never fit into one film. Get the book and many of the side stories that were only touched on in the film will suddenly spread out before you in full detail. Definitely a gripping and enjoyable read.
Basic Vision: An Introduction to Visual Perception

How do we spot a familiar face from across a crowded room, and know that we're not waving to a complete stranger? How can we judge that an oncoming car is approaching too fast for us to cross the road safely, and immediately determine that we're better off waiting at the curb? Basic Vision: An Introduction to Visual Perception demystifies the processes through which the brain "sees." It leads us through the various elements that come ...
The Amazing Brain

The brain is like an ancient house with modern additions.
The most striking aspect of the authors'work is the magnificent way in which the various layers of the brain/consciousness are paired with the drawings evoking our ancient evolutionary history. Rather than a modern suburban house built on a scraped lot, the brain is portrayed as a ruin with succeeding layers built on top of each other. I believe the book succeeds in conveying a sense of ...

"You Wouldn't Understand," she said - Rachel Wallace. This novel is Spenser's Reply.
FAMILY HONOR lived up to its title as the pilot for this delightful series which felt at first like Spenser was toning himself into a female roar heard round the literary arena, while extending his slant on gangster Vs cop family backgrounds (in which neither is all bad or all good) in this Juliet and Romeo romance. I hadn't thought I'd be able to get into a female private eye series by ...

Seminal, Uplifting, Beautiful
If I could give this book 6 stars I would. Robert Farris Thompson presents our rich, ancient history making it quite clear that African Americans are not an isolated group but a group intimately connected to particular cultures and societies in West Africa and the African diaspora. The rich text is generously supported by illustrated plates. Essential reading for those who wish to gain an ...

Excellent guide
I bought this book about a year ago when I was contemplating stretching the life of my 4+ year old PC. The book proved very useful for me to zero in on the biggest bang-for-the-buck upgrades, and which ones were best to avoid because they yield low performance for the dollar. About a month ago, I decided to build my own PC. This book again proved useful in helping guide me in making decisions ...

An Outstanding College-Level. . .
. . .introduction to Astronomy from one of America's foremost Astronomers. I have a confession to make. Astronomy has always fascinated me -- ever since I was a very small child. When other 2nd graders were talking about whatever it is that normal 2nd graders talk about, I was talking about Clyde Tombaugh, Sir William Herschel, John C. Adams, etc. -- the men who discovered Uranus, Neptune, and ...

Good for the Novice Photographer
I was disappointed that the book didn't go into more detail about photographic techniques for photographing natural landscapes and the environment. However, for the novice photographer on a first-time trip to Hawaii the book may prove to be a worthwhile investment. The book contains many fine pictures and tips on where to find some scenic locations, but falls short in helping the more ...

Terrific collection of short stories
This is a must for every Jim Thompson fan. Some of the stories are biographical, which will give the reader more insight into the man. Other stories are just terrific examples of crime noir. This World and Then the Fireworks is included as kind of an unfinished novella, and it is really something. Very twisted, even for Jim Thompson.
