James H. Stewart; Robert F. Herrick; Frank Labato; Martin Horowitz; Jacob Shapiro

Millennium Associates, 2005

Great for preparation for certification!
This is an excellent industrial hygiene reference book. I used it to study for the Certified Industrial Hygiene exam, and passed the exam on my 1st attempt! (I had borrowed it from a friend & unfortunately I had to give it back after the exam. ) Am now starting a study group of folks from work and we'll be using this book as a reference--it is excellent!

Daniel and the Minor Prophets1 review

Zondervan, 1985

Review of set, not specific volume
Let me start by saying that I have owned the full 12-volume set for about a year and use it quite frequently as a resource. To be fair, I have yet to use this particular volume. However, as there seem to be no competent reviews on the set as a whole, I did want to add my impressions of this terrific resource. I can say that I'm very satisfied with my purchase of the 12 volumes in this set. ...

Winner-Take-All Society12 reviews
Robert H. Frank, Philip J. Cook

Free Press, 1995

An Explanation for the Growing Economic Inequality
The basic premise of this book is that the U.S. has too many markets where the "star" or top performer gets a large percentage of the proceeds. Examples are the sports market, the movie star market and the publishing market; The reasons given are; -Technology. National distribution channels such as network television make it easier for an individual to penetrate the market. For example, at ...

Choosing the Right Pond: Human Behavior and the Quest for Status2 reviews
Robert H. Frank

Oxford University Press, USA, 1985

A Primary Source in Evolutionary Psychology
Frank offers empirical evidence that people organize themselves into status hierarchies - that high status is an advantage and low status is a hardship. The animal kingdom at large does this, too, and that explains why this book is found in the bibliographies of books like Robert Wright's "The Moral Animal: Why We Are the Way We Are: The New Science of Evolutionary Psychology" and Stephen ...

Passions Within Reason5 reviews
Robert H. Frank

W. W. Norton & Company, 1988

A Pathbreaking Contribution
Passions within Reason is a remarkably prescient and insightful book, drawing upon behavioral research of the decade leading to its publication (1988). It is also a rather subtle book. Even though I used in in a college course I taught in 1989, I do not believe I really understood it until I reread it very recently. Frank asks: why to people help others, and retaliate against others who harm ...

Oceans (The Illustrated Library of the Earth)1 review
Robert E. Stevenson, Frank H. Talbot

Rodale Pr, 1994

A Wonderful Information Guide to the deep!
Oceans is an excellent book starting with the "anatomy" of the ocean and ending with creatures and the future. I carried this book around with me for days jumping to where I left off every chance I got. It's a sensational guide to the mysterious deep!

Principles of Microeconomics3 reviews
Robert H. Frank, Ben Bernanke

McGraw-Hill Education, 2000

Microeconomics is Fun Again
This book is great! Would give it a 100 stars if they had it. It breaks down all these economic concepts that you are having trouble with into simple, basic ideas that you can relate to. It uses clear, everyday examples and discusses everything in such a conversational sense, you won't even remember you are doing MicroEcon. So this may come across to some as the book being written for high ...

Luther (LCA School of religion series)1 review
Robert H Fischer

Lutheran Church Press, 1966

Excellent beginner's history to Luther and his times.
Fischer's book on the life and works of Luther is obviously intended to be a school-age biography of the great leader of the Reformation. I would suggest it for Middle or High School age students. It has several simple pencil illustrations spaced throughout the book that neither add nor detract from the text as a whole. This would also be an appropriate book for anyone new to Martin Luther or the ...

Microeconomics and Behavior8 reviews
Robert H. Frank

McGraw-Hill Publishing Co., 2005

Mathematical--no. Fascinating--yes!
It's rare to find a text as enjoyable to read as Frank's in any subject, let alone microeconomics. The reader looking for the standard calculus-based, mathematical approach to micro should look elsewhere (Jehle and Reny is a great place to start). That's simply not the point of this text--the point is to provide the insight behind the models, as well as to promote critical thinking about the ...

100 Years of Flight: A Chronology of Aerospace History, 1903-2003 (Library of Flight Series)
Frank H. Winter, F. Robert Van Der Linden

AIAA (American Institute of Aeronautics & Ast, 2003

In just 100 years, air and space exploration has progressed from a 12-second, 120-foot flight by two brothers to nearly 30 years of sustained flight by a spacecraft, now eight billion miles from Earth, traveling at almost 40,000 miles per hour. Drawing on the extensive collection of the National Air and Space Museum (NASM), and personal collections, this full-color, beautifully illustrated book chronicles the most significant accomplishments ...

This volume of Blackwoods tales is noted for "Christmas Eve on a Haunted Hulk" by Frank Cowper. It's the story of a haunted ship comparable to those of Weird Tales author William Hope Hodgson.

Falling Behind: How Rising Inequality Harms the Middle Class9 reviews
Robert, H Frank

University of California Press, 2007

Falling Behind...
I absolutely hate history, but Frank makes it relatively quick. His analysis of the current situation in the United States (relative versus absolute spending issues) is convincing, and his plan (along with many others) for policy change is reasonable. Now, if only politicians funded by big business would listen...

Introduction to Thermal Sciences: Thermodynamics Fluid Dynamics Heat Transfer1 review
Frank W. Schmidt, Robert E. Henderson, ...

Wiley, 1993

A Students View.
Its not that its a bad book, but that it was certainly not a book that I feel makes the subject easy to understand or comprehend. I feel that there must be other books, such as those in similar fields by Cengal and Boles. If its prescribed for a paper I would reckomend getting it out from the library rather than buying it. I had to buy it for an open book exam, and am now having trouble ...

Luxury Fever33 reviews
Robert H. Frank

Princeton University Press, 2000

For both left- and rightwingers
8 Years after its release, this book has only become more relevant. Its argument can be stated in a single sentence: Our soaring expenditures on luxury articles are the result of a zero-sum status seeking conquest, that leaves everybody worse off. This is ultimately an empirical claim, and as simple as it is, there are a lot of steps in this argument that could make it false. Is it true that we ...
