Building Academic Vocabulary: Teacher's Manual4 reviews
Robert J. Marzano, Debra J. Pickering

Association for Supervision & Curriculum Deve, 2005

Best Enjoyed with Building Background Knowledge For Academic... by Robert J. Marzano
This book was worth the purchase because of the leveled word lists for ALL subjects. Almost 8,000 for 11 subjects - that includes all the topics covered in Social Studies, noncore classes, all leveled by grade range. It does refer to the accompanying Marzano work often and I found I needed to purchase both to receive the full amount of understanding I wanted on the subject. You need this if ...

Transforming Classroom Grading1 review
Robert J. Marzano

Association for Supervision & Curriculum Deve, 2000

Terrific Book
I'm about to rave about this book, so let me say first that I'm not a friend of the author and I have no connection to the publisher. I'm a professor in a school of education with an interest in all sorts of assessment, but classroom assessment in particular. This is the best book on grading I've read yet. Marzano first argues that grading is a very important matter, at the heart of the ...

What Works in Schools: Translating Research into Action4 reviews
Robert J. Marzano

Association for Supervision & Curriculum Deve, 2003

What works in Schools
I have been a classroom teacher for 25 years. In that time, I have seen many trends in educational philosophy. Finally, Marzano has written a book that addresses research based methods of instruction that actually are proven to increase student achievement. He addresses three key areas: School-Level Factors, Teacher-Level Factors, Student-Level Factors, and a section on how to implement these ...

A Comprehensive Guide to Designing Standards-Based Districts, Schools, and Classrooms1 review
Robert J. Marzano, John S. Kendall

Association for Supervision & Curriculum Deve, 1996

Best generic text on standards...
This book is written by the co-authors of ASCD's content standards for K-12 education. This book addresses the other side of the coin: performance standards. How shall we evaluate what children do in school? What can teachers do, as part of their standards, to help youngsters perform well? This is the best generic text in this area. The actual performance standards that you construct will be ...

Robert J. Marzano, Jana S. Marzano, ...

Association for Supervision & Curriculum Deve, 2003

Classroom Management
I bought this book for a graduate course I'm currently taking. I wish I had this book years ago, when I first started teaching. Classroom management is the most important part of effective teaching. This book combines research and clearly explains what's most effective and what isn't.

Building Background Knowledge For Academic Achievement: Research On What Works In Schools by Robert J. A Different Kind of Classroom: Teaching With Dimensions of Learning1 review
Robert J. Marzano

Association for Supervision & Curriculum Deve, 1992

A Different Kind of Classroom : Teaching w/ Dimensions of L
I really enjoyed the concept that the book was trying to convey, but found the book tedious and difficult to understand. I would definitely need a workshop or class in order to implement the ideas into my classroom.

Assessing Student Outcomes: Performance Assessment Using the Dimensions of Learning Model1 review
Robert J. Marzano

Association for Supervision & Curriculum Deve, 1993

Developing Thoughtful Assessment
In this book, Marzano begins to refine an assessment model that ten years later has become widely embraced in the profession. Because he is basing it on his Dimensions of Learning model, it is unbelievably complex--that is, unbelievable to the classroom educator he hopes will use it to painstakingly analyze the multiple components of learning articulated by the model. As an exercise in ...

A Handbook for Classroom Instruction That Works5 reviews
Robert J. Marzano

Topeka Bindery, 2001

Great for Professional Book Study with Teachers!
I used this book to guide a book study with elementary teachers in a school where I was the principal. All teachers in the study were reading Marzano's Classroom Instruction that works and a couple of us had a copy of this book to bring in additional information and activities to enhance our study. Both books present the "cut to the chase" version of research that many teachers appreciate ...

The Art and Science of Teaching: A Comprehensive Framework for Effective Instruction3 reviews
Robert J. Marzano

A Real Winner for Teachers Dedicated to Self-Improvement
This book, for the reflective teacher, is a tremendous tool to help guide teachers toward constructing meaningful lessons that promote real learning. The book provides solid strategies to support teachers in their efforts to go beyond "covering" material to teaching content for learning in ways that are both measurable and meaningful. This is a real "teacher's handbook."

Classroom Assessment & Grading That Work2 reviews
Robert J. Marzano

Topeka Bindery, 2006

Broad concepts, and specific suggestions
I got a great deal out of this book. Marzano's books are always very research based (a plus if you ask me) so they're nto exactly beach reading. This book, in particular, mostly describes a specific grading method that is similar to CBM, that needs to be implemented school wide. It also adresses several braod ideas that are important to authentic assessment that teachers can apply at a ...
