Naval Action in World War I
Castles of Steel is a spellbinding account of the British and German navies in World War I. Thoroughly researched and engagingly written, it brings to life the ships and the personalities who sailed in them. It also displays Massie's customary command of the political figures who ordered the navies to sea. A fine read that will be enjoyed even by those who do not focus on military history.

My favorite history book
I love to read history and have numerous books about many people and events that happened throughout history. But this book has to be my absolute favorite. Peter the Great was an amazing person and led a life without one dull moment. Once you start reading this book it will be difficult to put it down. Even though he did not live into old age, he lived a life full of adventure and you will never ...

Much-Awaited Finale to 'Nicholas and Alexandra'
Massie is a master historian and storyteller, and this book is nearly impossible to put down. Though reading Massie's prequel, 'Nicholas and Alexandra', is not essential to understandng 'The Romanovs: The Final Chapter', it is highy recommended. Beginning with the murder of the Romanov family, then moving to the discovery and exhumation of their remains, forensic and DNA analysis and the ensuing ...

Photographic History of Forgotten European Dynasties
This oversized book is filled with beautiful sepia-toned photographs of European royal houses in the decades prior to the first world war. Most of the dynasties photographed here were "discontinued" in the post-war clamor for self-government. The ones that remained were stripped of any significant power. The introductory text by Robert Massie is quite lengthy and gives a detailed description ...

In 1955, after assignments at the U.S. Office of Naval Intelligence (ONI) and on board a destroyer, Marvin Durning arrived at ONI?s office in Munich, Germany. During this year, he participated in the final stages of transforming Germany from a defeated enemy into a respected democracy, reestablishing its sovereignty, and shepherding its membership in NATO, which also involved rearming America?s erstwhile foe. At that time, Munich, like Berlin, ...

Dreadnaught
This is perhaps the finest, most informative, and eminently readable book on history I have read in 50 years of exploring the subject. It is comprehensive and an indispensable book for those who wish to understand the dynamics of European and world history since the mid-19th century. Dr. M. H. Wilkinson

A beautiful photographic overview of a beautiful time
Despite the Amazon header, "The Last Courts of Europe" was in fact edited by Jeffrey Finestone, with an introduction by Robert Massie. The book is divided into several sections: Great Britain; Russia; Austria-Hungary; Prussia; The Lesser German States; Belgium, Luxembourg and The Netherlands; France; Scandinavia; Iberia; Italy; The Balkans; and The Eleventh Hour. There are over three hundred ...

A Good History Of The Last Romanovs
While I disagree with the somewhat neo-monarchist views of Mr. Robert K. Massie, I will admit that his book holds a particular amount of merit for any Romanov enthusiast. Mr. Massie is an expert at crafting a historical piece of literature, into a pleasing story for anyone, and he does so here with startling effect. While I may disagree with Mr. Massie's sympathetic views I give Nicholas and ...

An epic of immense proportions.
It was the First World War - known at that time as "The Great War" which changed Britain and Europe forever. As the Generals on both sides sent millions and millions of men to their deaths in the carnage which they regarded as warfare, there came about a change in the psyche of the British male - a change which would herald a complete alteration in the way he thought and acted towards those of ...

The story behind the story...
Having been a Romanov fan for over 30 years, I don't know how Journey by Robert and Suzanne Massie escaped my notice for so long. Written in journal style, both authors alternate entries that detail their experiences with hemophilia on many different levels. First, their oldest child, Robert Jr. (Bobby) was born in 1956, and was quickly diagnosed with hemophilia. Journey chronicles their ...

Dense but intense
I bought this book about two years ago by amazon, it was a used edition but in good condition. I think it can be really hard to read through some passages but in the whole is a very complete book about the subject it talks. A compilation of things I really dind't know and over all a really interesting book!
