The Famous 41: Sexuality and Social Control in Mexico, 19011 review

Palgrave Macmillan, 2003

A raid that lives on in Mexican culture, making "41" a slur
Derived from a conference held at Tulane University on the centennial of the 1901 drag ball raided by Mexico City police, the book includes  (in both Spanish and English) a substantial part of a naturalist novel by Eduardo Castrejon, _Los 41_ that describes preparations for the ball, the ball, and the Yucatan exile of the unlucky cross-dressed males, the famous Posada cartoons, the reports from a ...

Story CD: Style, Structure, Substance, and the Principles of Screenwriting173 reviews

HarperAudio, 2006

Essential reading for any writer
I've read a lot of fiction help books, but most of them are geared at the mechanics and tricks of fiction. None of them, in my opinion, philosophically tackles the concept of story telling and how stories work. Instead, they give tips and techniques like "put in rising conflict" or "make your characters likeable" In STORY, Rob McKee tells us, from a conceptual, historical & technical view, what ...

Mexican Masculinities (Cultural Studies of the Americas, V. 11)1 review
Robert McKee Irwin

University of Minnesota Press, 2003

from a male perspective, !en Mexico!
Who says the academic discipline known as "queer theory" can't be applied to non-English literatures? Here McKee Irwin uses a sprinkle of Foucault, Butler, Sedgwick, and Michael Kimmel to discuss masculinity in Mexican literature. His biggest contention is that although others have theorized that the interracial heterosexual dyad or the cross-class dyad is the most striking feature of the ...

Media Ethics: Cases and Moral Reasoning (7th Edition)2 reviews
Clifford G. Christians, Kim B Rotzoll, ...

Allyn & Bacon, 2004

Best Applied Ethics Text, Media or Otherwise
A previous reviewer criticizes the book because throught-provoking discussions are begun but not wrapped up or resolved. If they were, the book would not fulfill its function. It's a TEXTBOOK for college classroom settings like the one in which I've used it, and all previous editions, over the past 15 or so years. It's purpose is to provoke discussion so that readers will thrash out the available ...

Fundamentals of Mechanical Component Design3 reviews
Kenneth S. Edwards, Robert B. McKee

McGraw-Hill Education (ISE Editions), 1991

Great book for practicing designers
Great coverage of fatigue. Good coverage of bolted joints, members in tension, compresion, and twisting. Best review of stress I've seen in any book - makes practical sense of Mohr's circle. Many of my coligues speak highly of this book as well. If I had to pick a favorite book in my engineering library, this would be it.

Barney Cd Storybook: Barneysays,Play Safely/Big Balloon/Outer Space Adventure/Comeon over to Barney's House ...2 reviews
Margie Larsen, Mary Ann Dudko, ...

Hinkler Books, 2004

Barney's CD Storybook is Super-dee-duper
My 3-year old son loves this CD storybook. He has trouble sitting through a regular story but this storybook collection on CD keeps his attention throughout the entire four stories. There is a beep when it is time to turn the page and he is able to follow along on his own. This is really helping him enjoy books more. We highly recommend it and look forward to more storybooks on CD.

A Brush With Animals: Japanese Painting 1700-19501 review
Robert Schaap

Hotei Publishing, 2007

Compiled from collections of members of the Society for Japanese Arts
Any college-level art library strong in Japanese arts needs A BRUSH WITH ANIMALS, which was compiled from collections of members of the Society for Japanese Arts (both private and public museum collections are members). It pairs essays explaining the stories and legends behind the animal imagery with background information on the social and artistic context of Japanese hanging scroll paintings, ...

Adaptation: The Shooting Script (Newmarket Shooting Script Series)7 reviews
Charlie Kaufman, Robert McKee, ...

Newmarket Press, 2002

This is about a screenplay.. not a book.
Adaptation by Charlie Kaufman (film dir. by Spike Jonze) is like the name might imply, about adaptation. Many critics of this script complain that it is a failure of Suzanne Orlean's novel "The Orchid Thief" but I disagree. The first point to make I've already said: it's about adapting a book. Now, there are plenty of references to the orchid thief, and this script is inexticably linked with ...

Story: Die Prinzipien des Drehbuchschreibens1 review
Robert McKee

Alexander Verlag Berlin, 2000

Robert McKee Irwin

Univ Of Minnesota Press, 2007

Bandits, Captives, Heroines, and Saints investigates cultural icons of the late nineteenth century from Mexico?s largely unstudied northwest borderlands, present-day Sonora, Baja California, and western Chihuahua.
