Swan Song458 reviews

Dark Harvest, 1989

An amazing read
I got completely caught up in this book, and stayed up much later than I should have most nights to get further in it. You get completely sucked in to the gritty world and the characters' struggles. I could not put this book down. Anyone who loves post-apocalyptic books should definitely give this a read.

Storytelling at its Best
There are many fine reviews of SPEAKS THE NIGHTBIRD on this website, the vast majority of them favorable. I'm not surprised -- this is a tremendously well done historical mystery, set in the colonial America period of 1699. Everything about this novel is good -- the layered storytelling, the exciting pacing, the vivid characterization, the gripping dialogue, the sly and bawdy humor, and the ...

Stinger48 reviews
Robert R. McCammon

Grafton, 1989

"Predator" + "Tremors" + a little "West Side Story" = "Stinger"
First and foremost, Robert McCammon is a terrific horror writer who has yet to write a weak book in this reviewer's humble opinion. The only problem with McCammon is that he doesn't write enough books. With that being said, let me cover a little about this gem of a horror ride. "Stinger" hits the ground running with a story that starts out about rival gangs pitted against each other in the ...

Mystery Walk30 reviews
Robert R. McCammon

Pocket, 1992

Ignore the cover, this is a brilliant read!
This book has been around for ages, I know because I've glanced over the cover probably a thousand times. Always the same cover, a dark sky with a strange feline-esque face shrieking out of it. Having never heard of McCammon until recently I'd glance at the cover and shake my head assuming the book was more over-hyped badly written horror. Magically this book, whose cover had turned me off for ...

Gone South37 reviews
Robert R. McCammon

Pocket Books, 1992

Going going gone
It's not often that a book can make me laugh out loud while at the same time feeling so sad about the characters lives, but this one did. The fact that the characters needed so little to feel like they were actually getting ahead made me think twice about what is really important. I love the fact that McCammon can and does switch from one genre to another, losing nothing and always delivering ...

RELENTLESS...
This is a well-written thriller that is relentless in its pacing. It will capture the reader's imagination from the beginning. It intertwines the stories of two women, Mary Terrell and Laura Clayborne. Both are women with a mission. Mary is a radical hippie extremist, who once belonged to a terrorist organization called the Storm Front. She is responsible for several murders, and has been ...

TOP-KNOTCH WEREWOLF YARN...
I like werewolf stories, but when I first heard about this book, I thought that the plot sounded pretty far-fetched. Michael Gallatin is a sexy, handsome, debonair, and highly intelligent British spy, battling the Nazis. He is also a werewolf. Hmm, I thought, it just won't work. Well, I was wrong. This is a page turning, attention grabbing book that will simply not let the reader go, so ...

Blue World20 reviews
Robert R. McCammon

Grafton, 1989

One of McCammon's Best
Robert McCammon has (for the most part) stopped publishing his work. With the notable exception of the excellent "Speaks the Nightbird," he hasn't published new work in 10 years. I can only say that this is a pity. Re-reading "Blue World" recently, I was reminded of why. "Blue World" is a collection of 12 short stories spanning McCammon's career, and one novella. The stories are all worth ...

Hardy boys with a bit of Harry Potter sprinkled in...
This is the first book I have read by the author and what a great introduction. Considering this book was written in the early 90's, the 12-year old Cory M. main character, was a harbinger of the "magical boy" at the edge of adolescence. Ala Harry Potter, Cory has the sixth sense. Though there are elements of horror, this is mainly a autobiography of kids in the 60's. The feel of the time is ...

The Year's Best Fantasy and Horror: Third Annual Collection25 reviews
Charles de Lint

St. Martin's Press, 1990

Another Satisfying Entry In The Series
I collect this series hungrily. There are always at least 10 stories that excite and amaze me, and I do feel they can honestly be called "the best" of each year. I also buy stacks of other genre anthologies, none of which demonstrate such consistent quality. How there came to be a gap on my shelf where this volume ought to be I'm not sure, but I did find out while shopping for its replacement ...

Stalkers: 19 Original Tales by the Masters of Terror1 review
Robert R McCammon, Rick Hautala, ...

Phoenix Audio, 2008

Hunter and Hunted
Rather than a collection of creep-up-on chronicles or chase-scene scenarios, this audiobook is comprised of an eclectic blend of stories of unfortunates plagued by stalkers both psychological and logical, earthly and unearthly. Revenge, guilt, lust, and desperation drive both perpetrator and victim in locales as frighteningly diverse as dark city streets, Amazon jungles, and deep-South swamps. ...

The Night Boat14 reviews

My First McCammon Book
This was the very first book I read from this author and from then on I was hooked on Robert R. McCammon novels. His writing style always draws you right into the story and really makes you feel like you are a part of the action, adventure and horror. His books aren't just horror stories, they are an adventure as well. The book snares you right at the start with the Prologue, detailing how ...

Baal15 reviews
Robert R. McCammon

Sphere, 1979

Not his best, but still enjoyable
I read this book in an evening; it's a fairly quick read if you don't lose interest. I had no problem with it, but I can see where others had issues with it. This was McCammon's first book, so it is by no means his best. The story of Baal (a daemon or demigod of evil) who is born from a raped woman and manages to gather together a frenzied following of believers. The "good guys" we follow ...

Bethany's Sin8 reviews
Robert R. McCammon

Avon Books, 1984

These are no Wonder Women
After reading the reviews posted here, I approached Bethany's Sin with a degree of caution as it wasn't that highly rated. But having enjoyed almost every other Robert McCammon book I've read, I didn't think it could be all bad. I'm happy to say that I found this book most enjoyable. Bethany's Sin is a small Pennsylvania town where the main character Evan, his wife Kay, and his daughter ...

Usher's Passing26 reviews
Robert R. McCammon

Pan Books, 1986

A great horror book I just keep coming back to.
I think the reason why I enjoy this book so much is its use of typical gothic horror trappings, which I love. What can I say, I like the classic, i.e. what others might call "tired out cliches." "Usher's Passing" by Robert McCammon, a very fine author, is just a good old fashioned horror story. The story starts off with a vignette from the past. The Ushers are a real family, and their ...
