After Heaven: Spirituality in America Since the 1950s 1 review Robert Wuthnow
University of California Press, 2000
american pastiche religion - trenchant, hopeful analysis Robert Wuthnow is the most prolific and most interesting contemporary sociologist of religion, delving again into the ambiguous heart of American spirituality. This study is certainly the most accessible, popular analysis of religious trends since the 1950s, with a startlingly convincing interpretation of how attitudes about religion and spirituality have changed in the post-modern era. After the Baby Boomers: How Twenty- and Thirty-Somethings Are Shaping the Future of American Religion 3 reviews Robert Wuthnow
Princeton University Press, 2007
Lots of statistics, helpfully interpreted After reading Smith and Denton's book, Soul Searching, with its great statistics on teens and faith, I wanted a book that was similar with information on young adults. I needed facts, not feelings, and this book offers that. I find it fascinating and easy reading, though I must admit I don't study every table carefully! It has been quite useful in my thesis work with young adults and faith.

Christianity in the 21st Century: Reflections on the Challenges Ahead 1 review Robert Wuthnow
Oxford University Press, USA, 1993
Professional, appreciative, and far-seeing Wuthnow gives an unbiased study of where Christian churches are moving, or not, across the world. He studies where organizational and personal growth are happening, or not. His work compares with Tariq Ramadan's thought on the future of Islam, but Wuthnow is more social science and less philosophy. I like the highly professional approach.
The future Wuthnow sees is driven more by lay ...

God and Mammon in America 1 review Robert Wuthnow
Free Press, 1994
Overcoming the love of money GOD and mammon is right! Too onesided. Enter Robert Graves with Mammon and the Black Goddess to balance the books. With the Divine Marriage (beyond mere mortal, only human) of White God and Black Goddess, the love of money, the root of all evil, ceases. Theory or Religio (correct spelling)? You be the judge. P.S.: I am reminded of the story of Bill W., co-founder of AA, and a handful of ...

American Mythos: Why Our Best Efforts to Be a Better Nation Fall Short 1 review Robert Wuthnow
Princeton University Press, 2006
Important Book This is a very important read for those interested in American culture, American myth, and the construction of American identity. Wuthnow's use of immigrants is so key, because so much of the American mythos is invisible to Americans that simply blindly consume it, having less "formally" learned it.

Learning to Care: Elementary Kindness in an Age of Indifference 1 review Robert Wuthnow
Oxford University Press, USA, 1995
Kindness This book really hit to the heart on what knidness means in today;s society. The author makes a point to remind us that we must reteach ourselves ways to care as adults because they are different from when we were kids. Also he explains that part of volunteering is reflecting on what you just did to understand it.

Acts of Compassion Robert Wuthnow

Robert Wuthnow finds that those who are most involved in acts of compassion are no less individualistic than anyone else--and that those who are the most intensely individualistic are no less involved in caring for others.

The Restructuring of American Religion 2 reviews Robert Wuthnow
Princeton University Press, 1990
A seminal work on American religious history Wuthnow's book is a thoughtful and well-researched monograph on major trends in American religious experience since the end of World War II. Wuthnow sees the most significant change as being a decline in the denominational divisions that were once so important in American religious life, and their replacement by a huge chasm between liberal and conservative religious sensibilities, a division ...

The Consciousness Reformation 1 review Robert Wuthnow
Univ of California Pr, 1976
hindsight is a great teacher Much of what was predicted in this book has come and gone. The changes in attitudes and values of the 1980's saw much of these ideas become a reality. Now this books main value is in the belief that everything comes around again...and as we sink into the retro thinking of the 1960's what does that tell us of where we are going now. A very interesting read and you can not help but wonder where are ...
