My Father Is in the Navy1 review
Robin McKinley

Greenwillow, 1992

A must have for all parents!
Never has such a simple book touch me so! This book takes us into the sadness of a little girl, afraid that she has forgotten her father, and lifts us up with her joy as she realizes that the heart never forgets! A must have for any parent whose children face separation, for whatever reason!

Beauty2 reviews
Robin McKinley

Julia Macrae, 1983

Warning: I WILL gush!
Beauty is a wonderfully solid reworking of the classic tale of Beauty and the Beast, with a strong, intelligent (and independent!) heroine, a charmingly gruff Beast, a fun plot and a crew of hilarious-but-believable -- supporting characters. The tale is told in first-person by Beauty herself, who was originally called Honor. As a child, she wrinkles her nose at being named after a high virtue, ...

Sunshine1 review

Blood and chocolate
I don't generally read books that are festering with vampires, but "Sunshine" is by Robin McKinley, one of my favorite fantasy authors. Plus I've just finished a couple of books about parasites, and if vampires existed I suppose they could be classified as parasites on humanity--resembling gigantic bed bugs (Cimex lectularius) or kissing bugs (Triatoma protracta) in regards to their unclean ...

The best book in the world
my sister made me read this book in the forth grade. I wasn't in to books much then. This book changed my mind. I have read it so many times I know the book by heart. I have not had the chance to read it since like the sixth grade as none of our other librarys have it. I recomend this book to any and all age groups and to anyone who likes to read or doesn't like to read.

Beauty1 review
Robin McKinley

Corgi Childrens, 2004

Enchanting "Beauty"
The best-known and best-loved of Robin McKinley's books is also one of the best of the fairy-tale retellings -- "Beauty," a more enlightened, fully-drawn version of "Beauty and the Beast." There's a depth and a richness to the story and characterizations, as well as a beauty of atmosphere and writing. Beauty (real name is "Honour") is the ironically-named heroine of the story -- she isn't ...

Hero and Crown240 reviews

The Hero & The Crown - Excellent Book
I first read this book when I was about 12 years old and as a young girl was captivated. I could relate to Aerins feeling of being the black sheep and her rise from being the unwanted sol to the hero of the story was a fairy tale I could make my own. I loved the book so much that over the years I read it over and over and never let go of it from move after move, from my first marriage, to my ...

Rowan2 reviews
Robin McKinley

Greenwillow, 1992

A sweet children's story
I read this book while desperately scouring my library for anything by Robin McKinley, and was mildly surprised to find that it was a child's picture book. Still, it was as well-written as anything by McKinley, and I would recommend it to anyone to read to their children.

falling in love with robin mckinley
Good then, and good now. A library of all the books ever written, a thousand details that make it all feel real.

Easily my favorite of all Robin McKinley's books
This book exhausted me. I bought it and stayed up all night to read it, and it left me feeling emotionally drained. It's very rare that I get so invested in a story, and in a character, but Lissar was both very real and very human, and I really CARED about what she went through and what happened to her. Having known several people who have been sexually abused, I found her reactions completely ...

The Outlaws of Sherwood64 reviews
Robin McKinley

Firebird, 2002

...A ROBIN WHO COULDN'T HIT THE SIDE OF THE BARN...
Undoubtedly there are other versions of the Robin Hood mythology just waiting to be thought up, written and published. The Sherwood legend is too well loved and too much of an archtype to be left alone for long. When these new stories come out, I'll read them and give them the benefit of a doubt. But, thus far, of all the Robin Hood books currently circulating, I would recommend four titles: ...

Robin McKinley

Berkley, 1987

Excellent!
I sincerely enjoyed this collection of short stories. I am a total sap for anthologies of short stories, and Robin McKinley is one of my all-time favorite authors. I must admit, however, that this is not my favorite group of short stories by her, but it was a great read.

Light Princess10 reviews
Robin McKinley, George MacDonald

Harcourt Childrens Books (J), 1988

My most beloved MacDonald book!
When I received this as a gift, I had already read and thoroughly delighted in "At the Back of the North Wind," "The Princess and the Goblin," "The Princess and Curdie," and "The Golden Key." When you read MacDonald, if your heart is right, you feel sheltered--the world he creates for you is as trustworthy and pure as C. S. Lewis's Narnia or Rivendell of Tolkien's Middle Earth. At the same ...

A Knot in the Grain and Other Stories22 reviews
Robin McKinley

Demco Media, 1995

Lovely little book....
Robin is true to form, and weaves together a lovely collection of short stories. The settings vary. Some are set in traditional fantasy, while the last is a very modern tale. All feature Robin's excellent wry writing style. Nothing in here is going to blow anyone away, but then why would it? That's just not her style. Delightful read.

Another wonderful heroine from McKinley
Let me be frank; I am already a solid fan of Robin McKinley. Her Damarian novels, "The Blue Sword" and "The Hero and the Crown" are already perennial re-readers of mine, and along with "Spindle's End" as well as "Beauty", have already captivated me with their strong heroines, their satisfying yet not quite predictable endings, and - most of all - McKinley's graceful, slightly poetic and totally ...

Blue Sword227 reviews
Robin Mckinley

Penguin Putnam~trade, 2001

A Wonderful Read
Robin McKinley specializes in telling familiar stories in captivating ways. Unlike her retelling of Beauty and the Beast and Robin Hood, the characters and plot of this book are unique creations from her own imagination. Most readers will, however, find the plot guessable after about page 50. Nevertheless, McKinley's memorable characters and setting, as well as her charming writing style, make ...

A Robin McKinley Collection5 reviews
Robin McKinley

Puffin, 2002

Robin Mckinley 3-pack
The first thing you need to know is that this is not hardcover. Its three books. Spindle's End is a very good book (all of robin mckinley's books are), but not as good as most of her books. It's a twisted Sleeping Beauty, where sleeping beauty is named Rosie. After Pernicia casts the curse on her, she is kidnapped by a fairy named Katriona. She grows up without knowing her identity, until her ...
