Sociology
Rodney Stark
Wadsworth Publishing
, 2006
SOCIOLOGY is truly a classic introductory text which introduces students to the methods and theories of sociology using Rodney Stark's hallmark "Over the Shoulder of a professional sociologist" approach, presenting sociology on a personal level. Stark describes what sociologists do and how they do it, focusing first on the questions they pose and how they search for and formulate their answers, and then moving on to study their answers and ...

This book is a victory for reason
After reading this book, I rather suspected that the title should refer to the book itself. Or maybe it should be called "why everything you think you know about the history of Christianity is wrong." Granted, that is a bit of an exaggeration, but this book squarely takes on all sorts of myths and confronts them with the facts and solid reasoning. No sacred cow gets left alone. Here are just a ...

Another grand effort by a leading, perhaps the leading, historian of early Christianity
I am not a Christian, but I am interested in the history of Christianity. Rodney Stark, I've concluded, is probably the leading historian of Christianity and, best of all, he doesn't defend, proselytize. mythologize - he simply describes the history. And, surprisingly, according to Stark, the history of Christianity is a more positive force than many historians want to give it credit for. ...

an excellent and refreshing view on church history
I have studied church history for some time now and I found this to be a great book, easy to read, and very interesting. I also recomment Rodney Stark's other work, I cannot comment on Roger Finke since this is the first contact I've had with his writing but I was very pleased. If you want to know more about American church history, you will enjoy this book.

Rodney Stark's A THEORY OF RELIGION
Rodney Stark's A THEORY OF RELIGION IS THE MOST IMPORTANT BOOK IN THE SOCIOLOGY OF RELIGION TO COME OUT IN THE PAST THIRTY YEARS. NO DOUBT IN MY MIND ABOUT IT. MARK D. COHEN, M.S.,SOCIOLOGY, UW-MADISON 1989 MASTER'S THESIS ON A LUTHERAN CHURCH

Tainted but worthwhile
My thinking on the subject of church dynamics has been strongly influenced by other works of Stark (The Rise of Christianity) and of Stark and Finke (The Churching of America). This latest in their combined efforts is also quite good. HOWEVER, I have found that a conservative bias is beginning to show. In my opinion, they have let biases against Liberal Theology taint an excellent exposition ...

Great Book!!!
This was a very good read. Rodney Stark knows his material. He starts with a premise and builds upon it until you almost can't help but agree. He adds a lot of historical data to show that he did a lot of research to come to his conclusion. He gives a history of slavery that very few researchers ever cover. He was not only thoughtful but unbiased in his approach. He gives the opposing viewpoints ...

Groundbreaking Work by a Sociologist
I was so inspired by Dr. Stark's careful research and thinking that I came to this site to write a review. Then I discovered Paul Frandano's review. I have never met Paul, but I think my best contribution to this collection of reviews would be to say, "read Paul's review!" He's nailed the book's strengths and noted his weakness (toward women). I thoroughly recommend Stark's The Rise of ...
Exploring the Religious Life
Rodney Stark
The Johns Hopkins University Press
, 2004
Though religion is for most people one of the most important aspects of their lives, social scientists and other observers of human society too often misunderstand and misrepresent the nature and role of religion in history and in daily life. From the supposed decline of religious attitudes in Western Europe and the venal motivations attributed to the Christian Crusaders to the very definition of religion, personal biases and an inadequate grasp ...

The Birth of a New World Religion?
In 1984 Rodney Stark predicted that by 2080 the Mormon faith would have no fewer than 64,000,000 adherents and possibly as many as 260,000,000. He was taken to task by many, but so far, over the past twenty years, the Mormons have outstripped his most optimistic predictions. How do they do it? Can they continue to do it? Stark offers some explanations. He begins by positing that Joseph ...

A fascinating look at the history of American churches
In this fascinating book, the authors (both sociology professors) look at the evolution of the American religious landscape since the Revolutionary War. In their study, they discovered three trends. First of all, in frontier areas (which in 1776 still included whole swaths of the thirteen colonies) there was a larger proportion of men to women, and consequently a lower rate of church attendance. ...

A well organized book, easy to use and full of useful facts.
For those in the field of religious studies, this book addresses the argument over secularization with a twist: Secularization actually maintains and perpetuates religion. Most of those who accept secularization's existance claim that it destroys religion. The authors provide persuasive arguements for their theory, and back it up with data organized into easy to use charts. Be aware, ...

A Study of Religious Intolerance
Stark goes right to the heart of religious intolerance. If our God is the one true God, those who worship other Gods are sadly mistaken and must be corrected. We can correct by persuasion or coercion. Missionaries choose persuasion. Countries which make it a capital offense to proselytize a religion other than the state religion choose coercion. Stark studies the history of religious ...

An Excellent Book. It Hits the Mark.
Secularization theorists beware! Stark provides an immensely satisfying theoretical exposition on the rise of Christianity and backs it up with historical data. This book is sure to aggravate the myriad of social scientists who study religion with only ad hoc theoretical frameworks and who use selective data to fit their "explanations." Many religious studies scholars will consider this book ...
