Peterson First Guide to Reptiles and Amphibians2 reviews
Roger Conant

Demco Media, 1992

Excellent Source for the Backyard Observer
If you're a backyard or weekend wildlife observer, this is the perfect book for you. Put it in your backpack, pocket, glove box or camper and always be ready to identify! The illustrations are excellent and provide enough detail to know one similar frog from another. If you're looking for some biological detail, go for a bigger book, but this one is great for quick ID.

North American Watersnakes: A Natural History (Animal Natural History Series, V. 8)1 review
J. Whitfield Gibbons, Michael E. Dorcas

University of Oklahoma Press, 2004

Review from The Nature Pages
This impressive reference covers much of what is currently known about the natural history of the genera Nerodia, Regina and Seminatrix in North America -- collectively referred to as "watersnakes" because of their common habitat. It does not include semiaquatic snakes found near or in water that are not dependent on wetland habitat for food and protection. Range maps down to the county level ...

Reptiles and Amphibians (Peterson Field Guide Color-In Books)2 reviews

Houghton Mifflin, 2003

The best book for a budding herpetologist
This book has had my son absolutely enrapured for weeks. There are probably 50 (+) or so line drawings each of snakes, salamanders, turtles and other lizards each with an interesting explanation. Your child can color in each drawing after finding its picture somewhere in the book. The diagrams are detailed enough for older kids as well as little ones probably starting with age 5 or so. This book ...

Venomous Snakes of the World4 reviews
Wil P. Mara

TFH Publications, 1993

Superb Photographs
A well-assembled, passionate, generalist overview of venomous snakes. But the pictures! Over 200 pages of glossy photographs that convey a ton of information and a lot of drama.

Snakes of the Agkistrodon Complex: A Monographic Review (Contributions to Herpetology)1 review
Howard K. Gloyd, Roger Conant

Society for the Study of Amphibians & Reptiles, 1990

A comment of this monograph
An excellent and detailed text, the best range maps ever assembled for the genus, and exquisite photography make this an instant classic. Only one criticism: the overemphasis on subspecies distorts completely the composition of the genus. Subspecies are uninformative from an evolutionary and biological standpoint, and this monograph obscures larger, more interesting problems (i.e., is the ...

Amphibians and Reptiles of New Mexico5 reviews
William G. Degenhardt, Charles W. Painter, ...

University of New Mexico Press, 2005

Seminal work on NM Herps.
There are many, even myriad, good things about this book. However, there are a few things I did not like and which, if corrected in a future revision, could turn this book into a world beater in the field of herpetology. First the "bad" things: 1. This book needs a topo and political map or several. Places and physical features are constantly mentioned but, other than the tiny ...

A Field Guide to Reptiles & Amphibians of Eastern & Central North America (Peterson Field Guide Series)19 reviews
Roger Conant, Joseph T. Collins

Houghton Mifflin, 1998

Excellent for identification of reptiles and amphibians
I live in North Carolina and I have been able to identify all the snakes, lizards, turtles, and frogs that I have found using this book. Good descriptions and photos to help you tell the difference between different species.
