A Field Guide to Warblers of North America (Peterson Field Guides (R))10 reviews
Jon Dunn, Kimball Garrett

Houghton Mifflin, 1997

Second to None!
Several years ago, while watching the bird feeders at Muskatatuck National Wildlife Refuge in Seymour, Indiana, I heard a voice behind me pointing out that there were two races of White-crowned Sparrow at the feeder. He went into detail about the subtle differences between the two. At first I thought to myself, who is this guy? Later, I realized that it was Jon Dunn! I have had a high respect for ...

The Magic Megaphone5 reviews
Nick Montoya, Roger S. Peterson

Megaphone Publishing Company, 2006

Simple is better...this book is very very useful.
I have to say the Magic Megaphone is a very simple and easy project management process. It's easy to glance at the process and possibly dismiss it as useless. I almost did. I'm very critical at times and maybe even a bit skeptical. Once I learned the process, my skepticism was silenced. It's a simple tool, and sometimes the simplest tools are the ones you can't do without. You don't hear people ...

The Littles Go Exploring (Littles)5 reviews
John Peterson

Topeka Bindery, 1999

It is a book about little people.
I think this is a good book because it keeps you interested. This is probably the best book I ever read. Let me tell you what the book is about. The story is about old Grandpa Little who everyone thinks is dead except Granny Little until Tom and Lucy find a secret room with Grandpa Little's journal. And then the Littles go exploing to find out that Grandpa Little is not dead. This is a good ...

Field Guide to Eastern/Central Bird Songs (Peterson Field Guides)5 reviews
Roger Tory Peterson

Houghton Mifflin, 1990

The birder's bible
Even when I lived in the city, I liked to feed and watch the birds (mainly sparrows and pigeons). Now that we live up in the woods, we're in bird paradise. Using this Peterson Field Guide for "Eastern Birds" plus a good pair of binoculars for visual identifications, and the "Birding by Ear Eastern/Central" CDs (Richard K. Walton and Robert W. Lawson) I've identified 42 species of birds in just ...

A Field Guide to Hummingbirds of North America (Peterson Field Guides(R))9 reviews
Sheri L Williamson

Houghton Mifflin, 2002

ADD THIS ONE TO YOUR BACKPACK!
As stated, it is difficult to go wrong with and of the Peterson Field Guides. This work is certainly no exception. Do be warned though, if you are a beginning birder, that NO field guide can meet all needs. This guide, like others, must be supplemented with as many different guides as possible. In this case, I might recommend Howell's wonderful work. That being said, you certainly need to ...

The Art of Robert Bateman5 reviews
Ramsay Derry

Pomegranate Communications, 2006

The Art of Robert Bateman is superb & endearing.
To see a Robert Bateman work is to glimpse a moment in Nature's time when an elk treks across a vast winter landscape of snow, conifers & mountains; or a stream bank where tender green plants glow against the moist earth & a minute bird perches; or a trumpeting bull elephant confronts you in a storm of dust. Roger Tory Peterson has written an expressive introduction & Ramsay Derry's profile of ...

FG EASTERN BIRDS NESTS CL (Peterson Field Guide Series)6 reviews
Hal H. Harrison, Roger Tory Peterson

Houghton Mifflin, 1975

Not Many Like This Out There
This is a highly recommended book for identifying bird's nests. It's amazing to see all the different types of nests that birds make. These creatures have true workmanship. It must have been a great challenge for the photographer(s) to find and photograph all the different nests throughout this fascinating book. You don't see many books out there on the market like this, so I recommend it.

ADVANCED BIRDING - Peterson Field Guide Series5 reviews
Kenn Kaufman, Roger Tory Peterson

Houghton Mifflin, 1990

Want to improve your identification skills? Get this book.
This book is appropriate for anyone who wants to improve his bird identification skills, whether he is already "advanced" or not. Kaufman does an excellent job detailing how to go about identifying birds in many problem groups, such as accipiters, dowitchers, and fall warblers. In some cases the information amounts to helpful hints that will make identification a little easier (did you know ...

This book is one of the best field guides I have ever had on African birds. It is extremely detailed and has pictures of so many birds, it is just AMAZING.

Save the Birds (Pro Natur Book)3 reviews
Roger Tory Peterson

Random House Value Publishing, 1991

Great conservation book
This book was published in 1989, so some of its facts are outdated, but this book is an excellent resource on how our human activity is directly impacting the environment and birds, and what we can do to save them. It is a great resource for nature enthusiasts and conservationists, and is filled with beautiful paintings and photography. I know this book is hard to find, but if you can find a ...

FG MOTHS CL (Peterson Field Guides)2 reviews
Charles V. Covell, Roger Tory Peterson

Houghton Mifflin, 1984

Fantastic! Well worth hunting down!
I had to look for awhile and put an Amazon search out to find this one used and I'm SO glad I did. This book was recommended to me by a locat naturalist who has been photographing and cataloging moths for many years. His copy is well worn with wonderful notes in the margins (oh if only I could have found such an edition!) I finally found this one and must say I'm starting to make my own ...

Seabirds (Helm Identification Guides)3 reviews

Christopher Helm Publishers Ltd, 1991

Highly influencial bird guide

All Things Reconsidered: My Birding Adventures3 reviews
Roger Tory Peterson

Houghton Mifflin, 2007

Fitting Tribute
The author, who died ten years ago, is the well-known originator of the Peterson's Field Guides. This book makes available to a wider audience a selection of columns he wrote for a bird magazine. In them, he takes us all over the world and familiarizes us with a wide variety of birds, other wildlife, and people. His prose style is a beauty in itself. The editor has updated the articles in ...

A Field Guide to Pacific States Wildflowers: Washington, Oregon, California and adjacent areas (Peterson ...4 reviews
Theodore F. Niehaus

Houghton Mifflin, 1998

Excellent Field Guide to help identify Wildflowers
I take this guide (and the Audobon Society Field Guide to North American Wildflowers-- west) on all my field trips to identify wildflowers. Though Peterson has fewer real photos, it does have better aids to identify specific wildflowers, as it is organized by color, as well as number and types of petals. The sketches help me do a preliminary id on the wildflower.

Foundations for Osteopathic Medicine3 reviews

Williams & Wilkins, 1997

Great for beginning and experienced osteopaths.
This is the long awaited basic textbook for osteopathic medicine. It is surprisingly complete, covering philosophy, history, research, and manipulative techniques. The beginning osteopathic student may find it most useful for its practical discussion on the techniques--high velocity, myofascial release, etc. I believe it is also helpful in standardizing our terminology, which will make it ...

The Complete Birder: A Guide to Better Birding4 reviews
Jack Connor

Houghton Mifflin, 1988

Essential birdwatching reading
For any active birdwatcher who goes beyond their backyard this volume is essential reading. Connor writes in a lively, entertaining, but also very educational style. Chapter on optics will be very helpful for beginners, but probably best are his chapters on various bird groups where individual species can be difficult to learn (I especially like the chapters on warblers, hawks, and ...

Wild America: The Record of a 30,000 Mile Journey Around the Continent by a Distinguished Naturalist and His ...3 reviews
Roger Tory Peterson, James Fisher

Mariner Books, 1997

Wonderful
Let me just quote my favorite line from the book. It is when James Fisher, an Englishman, first sees the Grand Canyon: "I went down there a few yards. The world ended; began again eight miles away. Between the ends of the world was a chasm." Now I have never seen the Grand Canyon, but reading about it with such wonder through Mr. Fisher's eyes was extraordinary. It brought tears to my eyes. It ...

Birding by Ear: Western North America (Peterson Field Guide Audio Series)2 reviews
Richard K. Walton, Robert W. Lawson

Houghton Mifflin, 1999

Excellent for the beginner/intermediate birder
As someone who is interested in improving their birding skills, I found this an excellent guide. The authors begin by explaining some basic bird facts related to vocalizations. They proceed with the recordings, which are grouped into birds with similar songs (the authors refer to this as "pairing"). This improves the listners ability to correctly identify the song with the bird. The last ...

Spring in Washington4 reviews
Louis Joseph Halle

Harper & Brothers, Publishers, 1957

A glorious and timeless exploration of the REAL news of D.C.
This is one of those rare books that lifts you out of your chair and brings you along on a soaring journey to the natural world beyond the government office windows. It is written as a daily journal of nature explorations in and around Washington, D.C. and makes a perfect companion for any watcher of spring. The author was a keen observer of natural life when he wrote the book in 1945, and the ...
