Another tummy tome from 'Gourment' Great Entertaining'
`The Best of Gourmet 2007' is a 65th Anniversary edition of recipes collected from `Gourmet' of both the last year and from the previous 65 (up to 2005) years. In most ways, it is very similar to `The Best of Gourmet 2006', which means it's an excellent source of menus for entertaining 6 to 8 people at dinner on a regular basis, when you have an aversion to repeating yourself too often. The ...

Warning - lot's of gushing to follow
I was in love with this book from the first words of the introduction, where Reichl tells us about the story telling tradition in her family. She introduces her book thus: "Everything here is true, but it may not be entirely factual. I learned early that the most important thing in life is a good story". She then proceeds to tell her stories so convincingly, with such candor and feeling, that you ...

A good introduction to the Joys of M.F.K. Fisher
This book of autobiographical essays is the best introduction to the writings of M.F.K. Fisher that I know of. I've read a lot of her books, and this remains a favorite. She gives us glimpses into the archaic and loving rituals of French cuisine, as practiced by the Burgundians, the strangeness of being a teenage girl in a cloister-like California boarding school in the 20's, and being the young, ...

Your Own Private Cordon Bleu Cook
This delightful part-memoir, part-cookbook is a poignant tale of times past, probably never to be recaptured. The author and family lived for a decade in France where they enjoyed the services of their excellent cook, Clementine. When war clouds broke over Europe, they were somehow able to convince this estimable lady to cross the ocean with them and settle in Marblehead Massachusetts. ...

Fun for Foodies and Everyone Else
I am not a foodie. However, Reichl's writing is so vivid I found myself thinking about the dishes she describes. Her style is easy to follow without dumbing the language down. The novel is one part funny anecdotes, one part food, and one part introspection. A great read!

A marvelous feast of writing
"Endless Feasts: Sixty Years of Writing from Gourmet" is a fine sampler of essays that appeared in Gourmet Magazine. This magazine, which deals with cuisine and travel, offers some of the best prose outside of literary magazines like the New Yorker or Atlantic Monthly. I already am a fan of M.F.K. Fisher (who isn't?), Paul Theroux and Laurie Colwin. But there are many other authors here whose ...

Unprejudiced palate?
Ms. Waters says that the book should be called "The prejudiced palate", and I agree. Angelo Pellegrini's book is both a cookbook and a gustatory memoir. It reminded me of many foods that I have not had since I was a child growing up in southern Spain, including rabbit, and odd cuts of meat, impossible to find at the local market. This book is a must for anyone interested in basic cooking, able to ...

From Osaka With Love
This is the only Japanese cookbook you will ever need. As other reviewers have already mentioned, it is indeed "the Bible of Japanese cooking." A little bit about me, I first feel in love with Japanese cooking at the age of 8, when for my birthday, my parents took me to Joto's Japanese restaurant and I tried Sukiyaki. The sauce was to die for. The sauce won me over more than the ingredients ...

A must have
Gourmet's cookbook is a must have for any collection. The range of recipes is incredible and includes everything from the basics to full 'gourmet' meals. The format makes it easy to find what you want to inspire you, and the stories on where each recipes came from make it feel very personal. With so many recipes, you should never run out of ideas on what to make for dinner!

Worse than Zagat, if that's possible.
We waited for this to come out because we think Reichl has done wonders for Gourmet and we thought her reviews were relatively accurate. We hate Zagat so we were willing to wait for something better. I reviewed books for the Library Journal, as Associate Book Review Editor, for 15 years so I looked forward to giving this an accurate (and I assumed good) review. Well the review is accurate but ...

I was truly Comforted by this book!
The Truth: I'm a Girl, I'm Smart and I Know EverythingAs a positive psychologist who focuses on women and girls in my own books, my latest being The Truth, the diary of a 10-11 year old girl who is struggling to grow-up and yet stay true to herself, I have to say I love Ruth Reichl's books. I am not here to pick them apart. Rather I eat them up, from first course to last, as the most ...

Reading and Remembering Why I'm an Armchair Traveler
What a great opportunity to learn more about the Paris I love, and French food which I do not prepare at home. I wait for my trips. I am not intimidated with the snooty waiters, as I did my "homework." I'm prepared to ask questions about loaves and wine and anything else. The set-up of the chapters was easy reading, too. I trusted the writers. I discovered more secrets in Paris via their ...

Nice book in lousy binding
This is an excellent guide to the best NY restaurants and to some of the more interesting neighborhood restaurants. I wish there were a bit more information about the size and setting, smoking areas and so on. But by far the greatest drawback of this book is its execrable binding. After only limited use, my copy began to disintegrate, not exactly what one desires in a reference book that one ...
