The Sea-Hawk12 reviews
Rafael Sabatini

W. W. Norton & Company, 2002

No Superficial Linguistic Dust Here
Having recently read several modern novels by contemporary authors, I was transported by THE SEA-HAWK back in time to an earlier style of writing and a distinctly different use of language. How many books, for instance, have you read lately that use the verb "trepan" very frequently? Didn't think so. Having found modern authors' use of language to be pretty bland and, in a few instances, ...

Ripping good stuff! Tales of pirates, desert sorceresses, lusty women and dangerous men
The mysterious desert. The high plains. The stormy seas. The dense jungles. These are the places where actions speak louder than words, where the sharp retort of a six-gun decides who is right and who is dead, and a blind tiger stalks with preternatural senses and determination. These are the settings for Adventure Tales, a genre of literature prominent in the 1900's, in which many of the ...

Scaramouche36 reviews
Rafael Sabatini

Signet Classics, 2001

He was born with the gift of laughter ...
This is my first Sabatini novel (just finished it last night), but it won't be my last - I found Scaramouche excellent. Scaramouche is set during the years leading up to and including the French Revolution, and follows the exploits of one Andre Louis Moreau, a lawyer, a bastard, and a Frenchman with close connections to the ruling class. Moreau begins the story without an inkling of support ...

Captain Blood8 reviews
Rafael Sabatini

Blackstone Audiobooks, 2006

AN AMAZING AUDIO PRESENTATION
I bought this CD and before I had a chance to listen to it, I read another review which slammed it right down to the music. So, I listened to it with a bias, waiting for it to be horrible. It isn't. Not by a long shot. Not by a VERY long longshot. CAPTAIN BLOOD, as produced by the COlonial Radio Theatre is without question, one of the most spectacular action shows on CD! I am also a fan of the ...

Mistress Wilding2 reviews
Rafael Sabatini

BiblioBazaar, 2007

As good as Captain Blood
Don't let the ugly cover put you off. Here again, Sabatini puts the Duke of Monmmoth's failed overthrow of King James II to good use. But this time the man of the hour is hopelessly in love with a woman who has refused his offer of marriage. But Mr. Wilding seizes the opportunity to force her into accepting him to save her brother, a coward and drunk who challenged Wilding to a duel ...

Bellarion the Fortunate A Romance1 review
Rafael Sabatini

P. F. Collier & Sons, 1926

Sabatini at his best!
This may not be Sabatini's best-known novel, but it is certainly among his best. Bellarion (1926) is the favorite hero of many a Sabatini fan, and it is easy to understand why. Here we have the author at his height, indulging his wit with sparkling dialogue and turns of phrase, his thorough knowledge of Renaissance Italy, as well as his penchant for ironic plot twists and surprises. A ...

Scaramouche a Romance of the French Revolution1 review
Rafael Sabatini

Grosset & Dunlap, New York, 1921

Swashbuckling!
This is the quintessence of a swashbuckling novel, and one of my absolute favorites. It's got politics, fencing, romance, philosophy, and revolution, frankly, it has it all! If you want a good swashbuckling adventure I can't recommend one more!

The Tavern Knight2 reviews
Rafael Sabatini

BiblioBazaar, 2007

Well written
The Tavern Knight is a classic adventure story well written from the first to the last page. Rafael Sabatini has written better books but I can find no fault with this one. If you're already familiar with Sabatini - just read it. If you are not, I'd recommend reading one of his more popular books such as 'Scaramouche' first.

The Lovers of Yvonne1 review
Rafael Sabatini

Spirit Lake Press, 2002

romantic (non-explicit) swashbuckler
What a pleasure to read a book written in 1902, and find a fast moving, pulse pounding adventure story written for adults. If your taste runs to adventurous tales of old like 'The Scarlet Pimpernel' or the entertaining historical romances of Georgette Heyer you will be pleased by the pen of Rafael Sabintini. Mr. Sabintini wrote dozens of historical novels including 'Captain Blood' and 'The Sea ...
