Winslow Homer: Outdoorsman
The art is amazing. And the book is a fine academic effort at explaining Homer. However, each chapter is authored by a different writer and not every chapter is equally well-crafted. This individual essay format also thwarts any attempt to present a cohesive story arc. In the end, I still wonder exactly why the outdoors meant so much to Homer; none of the author's fully or successfully ...

A Definitive and Long Overdue Book on American Women Artists
It is very much to the credit of the young art museum at Brigham Young University that they are publishing such fine catalogues that not only enhance the Museum's large collection, but serve to fill voids in the compendium of art literature. This superb catalogue, edited by Marian Wardle, gives evidence of the vision of Campbell B. Gray, the Director of the Museum: his presence is palpable and ...

Jackfish is AMAZING!
Jackfish, The Vanishing Village is an imaginary autobiography about a woman with a traumatic past and her need for redemption. Sarah Felix Burns has masterfully written a book so eloquent in description, yet so horrifically tragic that the line between beautiful and ugliness becomes blurred in a strangely contradictory way. Burns did such a magnificent job of telling a story that was wrapped ...

Preschooler Loves Jake!
Gave the book to a dear friend, and her comments were: Read "Jakes Adventures" to my preschool great-granddaughter. She was very attentive and asked questions. She was most interested in the page that has Jake's visit to Sesame Place. She had me read it to her a second time the same night. Jake got preference over Cinderella! About two weeks later she asked for it again, so she has become ...

It gives too little for the price
This is a charming little paperback. It features about 35 full-page and some smaller erotic images in all media. They are mostly black and white. For the person who requires a complete library on the topic, it is of course a necessity. However, it seems a bit pricey for the general reader considering how few images are included.

Travel Paintings from Early America
I am a big fan of American Impressionism and I like all three of the artists featured in this book. It's a scholarly review of the images that made Americans travel to see if the scenery was as magical as these artists depicted. From the New England coast, Niagra Falls, Grand Canyon, and Yosemite these artist were engaging in a recording of scenery that would soon be altered by the hordes of ...
Picturing the Banjo

Great images of a great instrument
The book is filled with beautiful color examples of how artists have incorporated the banjo in their work. Leo Mazow's insightful writing is the best in the book. Some of the essays are stretching the truth quite a bit but such is the problem with speculative art criticism. The book is bound beautifully and it is enjoyable to just sit back and look at the images. I wish it were hardcover. I did ...

New Interest in History!
I never enjoyed history classes in school, because I wanted to understand WHY events happened more so than when and where. Sarah Burn's "The Daughters of Juno, Chronicle I Matilda of Argyll" has renewed my interest in the history of the early settlement of the United States, the religious termoil in Europe, and the living conditions of that era. Sarah has done a wonderful job bringing out the ...

Slightly out of date?
Unfortunately, When I purchased this book it was a couple of week after Quadralay (the company that produced WebWorks Publisher) released an update version i.e., WWP 7.0 - This book was written for WWP 6.0. There appears to be quite a difference in the two versions. This book was written for 6.0. Although, I did find some parts of it informative. You need to get Scriptorium to come up with an ...
Critical Bodies: Representations, Practices and Identities of Weight and Body Management
Palgrave Macmillan
, 2008
This book showcases a selection of current work and debates on weight and body management practices that are being produced from the vibrant arena of critical and postmodern approaches in the social sciences. Weight issues have become central to Western understandings of health and identity, but analyses of weight and body management have often failed to contextualise weight related issues. This timely book addresses this gap by examining three ...

Introduction from the Author “So you’re going to Woo-stur is it,” people ask me constantly, drawling out the “oo” and grinning widely at the funny sound. “No, no,” I insist, “It’s Wu-ster.” And yes, we are in the middle of Amish country. And yes, we are a very small liberal arts school that many people don’t know about. And yes, we are continuing to produce well-rounded, independently-thinking people who go on to achieve wonderful things. ...

Introduction from the Author When I decided to enroll at Denison University, I quickly discovered that most people had never heard of it. When I told people I was going to Denison, I was consistently met with blank looks or perfunctory nodding. I began to question the decision I made, until I told my friend’s dad. When I said “I’m going to Denison,” his eyes lit up with recognition. He called Denison the “Yale of the Midwest.” Once I ...
