Pediatric Emergency Medicine Board Review (Pearls of Wisdom)1 review
William Gossman, Peter Emblad, ...

McGraw-Hill/Appleton & Lange, 2005

Eh...
Eh....not much of the bullet format. I like the Secret's books better. Might as well read a text. This is a great book to use in the ER to study, since you can read a question and answer during your down time.

NCLEX-RN Review (Pearls of Wisdom)1 review
Sheryl L. Gossman, William Gossman, ...

McGraw-Hill Professional, 2005

Good quick study book
this book is a really good 'take a peek' study book. It has straight up facts only. I like the way the facts are put. it tells you a simple question for exam ple *what are the initial symptoms of increased ICP? and it just tells you the answer. Very straight to the point. I am studying for boards now, and I think it is a good guide along with the other books I am studying.

ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) Review: Pearls of Wisdom (McGraw-Hill's ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life ...2 reviews
Michael Zevitz, Scott H. Plantz

McGraw-Hill/Appleton & Lange, 2007

Know Before You Buy
This review does NOT reflect the changes of the 2007 revised ACLS. The book has old, outdated information which is no longer applicable, nor recommended. Also I found a question that was repeated and had TWO OPPOSITE ANSWERS. Best just to use the Algorithm cards to pass the exam.

Critical Care Nursing Review (Pearls of Wisdom)3 reviews
William Gossman, Scott H. Plantz, ...

McGraw-Hill Professional, 2005

Lots of great bite sized bits of knowledge!
I think the previous reviewer was way to harsh... or possibly, arrogant? Hmmm... most of the info in this book is very signifigant, and unlike many review books, it is not weighed down by too much technically verbose fill. The book is written by the MD and nurses! I admit, he does throw some obviously useless bits of trivia (from a nursing standpoint) in occassionally, but most of it is ...

Pediatric Board Review (Pearls of Wisdom)2 reviews
Peter Emblad, Scott H. Plantz, ...

McGraw-Hill/Appleton & Lange, 2005

Too many errors
The below is a letter I sent to the editor after finding too many outdated answers, typographical errors and just simply wrong answers. I am not sure this text will help me study for the boards. The span of questions is excellent, but I feel I can not trust the answers given to be accurate. Its a shame, because I would expect this number of errors in a 1st edition, but not a 3rd. Dear Sir, ...

Family Practice Board Review (Pearls of Wisdom)1 review
William A. Schwer, Scott H. Plantz, ...

McGraw-Hill/Appleton & Lange, 2005

Terrible Review for ABFM
Based on the publisher, writers credentials, number of pages, "fast facts" review style, etc. I thought this would be great for ABFM prep. Unfortunately, the text is FILLED with typos and has a substantial amount of frankly incorrect medical information! One particular example: the orthopedics section is horribly inaccurate with respect to many fractures. I gave it 1 star for the "fast facts" ...

USMLE Step 2 & Step 3 Review (Pearls of Wisdom)3 reviews
Scott H. Plantz, Gillian Lewke Emblad, ...

McGraw-Hill/Appleton & Lange, 2005

disagree with the previous reviewer
This is an excellent review book in a Question - Answer format. The fact that most books are very close in content if written by the same author(s) is usually the case so let's not waste our time. In terms of reviewing material for Step-exams it has everything you need and more. I would say that a few days is not enough to go thoroughly through all of it, so allow yourself a bit more time and ...

NMS Clinical Manual of Emergency Medicine2 reviews
Paul D Biddinger, Jonathan N Adler, ...

Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 2002

Excellent for "what to do" and review
I found this pocket sized book indispensible for ER rotations since it gives you a USEFUL concise one page review of commonly encountered emergencies. Each diagnosis goes through etiology, presentation, physical exam, differential, recommended imaging/labs and disposition options. Use this as a memory aid if you are a resident and as a med student to look like a star! Granted Tintanelli is way ...

Emergency Nursing Review (Pearls of Wisdom)1 review
William Gossman, Sheryl L. Gossman, ...

McGraw-Hill Professional, 2005

DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY
It's hard to believe that a book edited by doctors and nurses could have so many typos and spelling errors. In addition, the format doesn't help you retain information - some answers are just long lists of symptoms. There is rarely any explanation of why the answer is correct, which to be fair, isn't surprising since it's advertised as a book that simply contains the correct answers. The ...
