Young Bloods (Revolution)3 reviews

Headline Review, 2007

Can't Wait to Read the Next One
This is a departure from the Legions of Rome for Simon Scarrow, but he has proved that he is not a one trick pony by coming up with another excellent read although he has moved through history by almost 2,000 years. Set in late 18th century Europe, the book follows the military career of two men who were to become the major driving force of their respective countries. The two men are world's ...

Under the Eagle: A Tale of Military Adventure and Reckless Heroism with the Roman Legions57 reviews

St. Martin's Griffin, 2002

VERY good book
This series compares very favorable with Cornwell and the "Richard Sharpe" adventures, but there is an intangible quality that makes these books even better. This author has a gift for writing, the books grips you from the very beginning and never lets go.

Life in Roman occupied Britain
Well researched view of Roman army life and conditions in first century Britain. The characters are interesting and the plot moves quickly. I would recommend it to students of Roman history and to those who just like a good story.

Eagle in the Sand Re-Examined
After reading some the negative reviews I decided to risk reading Eagles in the Sand because I had enjoyed the past books in the series so much. Well what did I find? For one, I came away with the impression that the negative reviewers never really read the book with care and attention. One refers to "bildings" made of wood, well they weren't made of wood but the roofs would be as in most ...

Centurion (Roman Legion 8) by Simon Scarrow
This was a thoroughly enjoyable novel that was hard to put down. After reading the whole series, I kind of know what's going to happen. For one thing, the leadership is always lousy, and the heroes have to survive in spite of it all. But you know what? I like the stories anyway because the main characters are so interesting and lovable. I wish the stories were twice as long.

A great follow up to the Eagles Prey
If you enjoyed the previous titles in this running series you won't be disappointed here. Cato and Macro are re-united with their nemesis Vitellius who is once again out for self fullfillment. Unlike the books in the earlier parts of the series Cato and Macro take to the sea to battle a pirate fleet that has been crippling the trade routes that keep the Roman Empire running. Cato and Macro are ...

An exciting romp through the ancient world!
As with the first two books from the Eagle series, I was totally entertained. I highly reccomend these books to anyone with an interest in ancient Rome and its military in particular.

Scarrow delights as always
Scarrow's characters ring true, as do his on and off duty activities. I'd read these to my Latin classes, except his legionaries talk like legionaries. Nevertheless, they are on my recommended list for students, and anyone interested in the Roman army. Cliched as it sounds, this is most assuredly a page-turner I didn't want to put down.

Can't wait for the next one
Having waited for this one after finishing Young Bloods I pounced upon it when it eventually arrived and devoured it pretty quickly. It is an entertaining and fast paced book with great flair and interest for the lover of historical fiction. It would certainly have helped Bambi had she read the first book - she might have realised that 1) it is not intended to be a biography, and 2) there are ...
