Hound of the Baskervilles (Aladdin Classics)125 reviews

Aladdin, 2000

A triumph of atmosphere
The setting is the star of Arthur Conan Doyle's atmospheric "The Hound of the Baskervilles," his most popular Sherlock Holmes story. With its barren fog-shrouded wastes, Neolithic ruins, and the treacherous Grimpen Mire, the bleak moor Doyle describes in such delicious detail is the ideal background for a creepy Gothic mystery. Does a cursed hellhound stalk the last heir to the Baskerville ...

The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (Oxford World's Classics)13 reviews

... whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth
In college I went through a phase where I read all the Sherlock Holmes stories. Once I got started reading Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's stories, I didn't want to stop. It was sad when I read the last story. Now years later it was fun to read them again. I enjoy the Sherlock Holmes short stories more than one of the novels. For me one of the most enjoyable parts of a Sherlock Holmes story is ...

Lost World & Other Stories (Wordsworth Classics) (Wordsworth Collection)1 review
Arthur Conan, Sir Doyle

Wordsworth Editions Ltd, 1998

The original dinosaur novel -- plus!
Ahh -- the creator of the great Sherlock Holmes tackles dinosaurs! In the first novel in this collection, Doyle's lesser-known protagonist, George Edward Challenger, leads an expedition to a South American plateau where prehistoric life still exists. While there's a bit too much Doyle-style propaganda here about evolution and cavemen (remember Doyle sought "the missing link"), it's a fine ...

The Best Sherlock Holmes Audio Dramas Around
I first became a fan of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Holmes stories when I was only about 11 or 12 years of age and that was a very long time ago indeed. Since then I have seen and heard literally hundreds of adaptations of these classic tales over the years and when it comes to audio dramatizations this set from the BBC is by far the best I've ever listened to. Back in 1989 the BBC undertook the ...

The New Annotated Sherlock Holmes: The Complete Short Stories (2 Vol. Set)27 reviews
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

W. W. Norton & Company, 2004

Excellent production, could have been bound better
Rather than repeat the reviews of the previous authors, I'd like to make two points related to the production of the book: The book should have been stitched rather than gummed at the spine. I can almost foresee my grandson many years hence trying to read Grandpa's favorite book that was willed to him, only to have the spine break. A book of enduring value must have a stitched spine. OTOH ...

Doubleday, 1960

Sherlock Holmes can do no wrong
This is a classic. Sherlock Holmes is my favorite detective of all time and this book will have a permanent place in my library. I do not mind the small print. I love the convenience of having all his works in one volume.

A Study in Scarlet1 review
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

Digireads.com, 2005

Sherlock Holmes Begins
Study in Scarlet / 1-420-92553-9 The world's first introduction to Sherlock Holmes, A Study in Scarlet encompasses the detective's first adventure in a whole book, rather than in the later short story format that Doyle favored. The first half of the book follows Holmes' normal case-solving routine, with the second half explaining the background and motive of the captured criminal - an unusual ...

Six Great Sherlock Holmes Stories6 reviews
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

Dover Publications, 1992

Classic & Cheap
The Dover-Thrift edition of Sherlock Holmes advertised here is quite worth the pocket change, containing some of my favorite Holmes short stories including "The Red-headed League" and "The Adventure of the Speckled Band." I'll keep this simple; whether you like Sherlock Holmes or not, you should get these six classic stories under your belt. If you haven't read Doyle, this is a great book to read ...

The Sign of the Four3 reviews
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

Digireads.com, 2005

Super Reader
Perhaps my least favorite of the longer Holmes works, at least the last time I read it, causing it to slip below the magic number. To be revisited at some stage. This in no way means it is bad, just not as beloved, or perhaps as brilliant as the others. You still can't go wrong with Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes.

Super Reader
A lovely origin story. Dr. Watson, returned from a war and in need of lodgings is led to Baker Street. In this fine location resides one Sherlock Holmes. They are soon on the trail of a mystery that involves a corpse, and a word scrawled in blood on a wool. Then there are dodgy mormons and a bit of wild west action.

The Casebook of Sherlock Holmes & His Last Bow (Wordsworth Collection)11 reviews
Arthur Conan, Sir Doyle

Wordsworth Editions Ltd, 1998

Super Reader
The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes contains stories by Doyle that are set later, after the turn of the century, and are probably not quite as strong as the rest of the collection. There is still the fun of The Sussex Vampire to be found, and the finger on the side of the nose style of The Illustrious Client to enjoy, and Holmes is still Holmes. Case Book of Sherlock Holmes : 01 The Adventure ...

The Complete Sherlock Holmes, Vol. 1 (Barnes & Noble Classics)6 reviews
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

Barnes & Noble Classics, 2004

Why this series?
Why this series, when there are so many editions of Sherlock Holmes? I wanted a complete anthology, and I settled on this series because it was (1) inexpensive and (2) the text was big enough for 50+ eyes to read comfortably. This 2-volume series is all those things, plus it has excellent foot- and end-notes to explain references and concepts that are not contemporary. I recommend it highly.
