The Crisis of the Negro Intellectual: A Historical Analysis of the Failure of Black Leadership (New York ...5 reviews
Harold Cruse

NYRB Classics, 2005

He pretty much says it all.
I don't think Black people can ever have a real conversation about unity until they read this book. Especially the chapter called 'Idealogy in Black'. The book is extremely honest about West Indian, African and African American behavior towards each other which ultimately leads to implosion. He covers everything, The Harlem Renaissance, Communism and many other critical topics but I think his ...

Fundamentals of Analytical Chemistry (with CD-ROM and InfoTrac )9 reviews
Douglas A. Skoog, Donald M. West, ...

Brooks Cole, 2003

A great book
I used this book in my undergrad Analytical Class. I sold it back at the end of the semester and have wished I hadn't for the last eight years. It is well thought out and easy to navigate when a quick answer is needed once you are out in the "real world". There are some mistakes, like any textbook, but I think the other reviewers are just frustrated crammers sending out late-night rants.

Analytical Chemistry: An Introduction (Saunders Golden Sunburst Series)7 reviews
Douglas A. Skoog, Donald M. West, ...

Brooks Cole, 1999

Good text for intro, general analytical course(s)
We use this text (now in its 7th edition) for both our Analytical I (chemical analysis) and Analytical II (instrumental analysis) courses. They are both 1-semester courses at the sophomore year, and this text is just the correct level and length to cover both courses. There are a number of broad sections, each of which is divided into several chapters. Roughly the 1st half covers chemical ...

Mr. Sammler's Planet (Penguin Classics)33 reviews
Saul Bellow

Penguin Classics, 2004

The Civilized Moralist Among the Dilipadated Hypocrites
I can imagine few curses worse, historically speaking, than being born in Europe at the fin de sielce. Being born during this period afforded millions of individuals a front row seat, from the flowering youth into the onset of middle age's end, to this century's most colossal stupidities and unspeakable horrors. First industrialized warfare with its colossal waste during the First World War ...

Love In Vain: A Vision Of Robert Johnson8 reviews
Alan Greenberg

Da Capo Press, 1994

Groundbreaking Book
I never read anything like this before--it was like watching an amazing movie in written form. This unique book is an undiscovered gem.

Principles of Instrumental Analysis23 reviews
Douglas A. Skoog, F. James Holler, ...

Brooks Cole, 2006

alternatives to this book
I'm not sure why there are so many negative reviews of this book. I found it to be very solid. For those of you who don't like it you have 3 options: either "Instrumental Methods of Analysis" by Willard, Merritt, Dean, Settle; (ISBN 0534081428) which is excellent and a true classic. or "Chemical Analysis: Modern Instrumentation Methods and Techniques" by Francis Rouessac & Annick ...

Considering Genius: Writings on Jazz9 reviews
Stanley Crouch

Basic Civitas Books, 2007

Tit for tat.
When Amazon sees fit to provide citizen-reviewers with any incentive to critique, I'll consider posting one here. That's what I learned from this collection of pivotal essays.

One Shot Harris: The Photographs of Charles "Teenie" Harris5 reviews
Stanley Crouch

Harry N. Abrams, 2002

The most underated photographer of all time
The fact that Harris is not a household name is a joke. If you are A. from Pittsburg B. an African American, C. a Human, you must own this collection. I can only say that in my mind, Harris blows away Evans and Weegee put together. An American Master

Reconsidering the Souls of Black Folk2 reviews
Stanley Crouch, Playthell Benjamin

Running Press, 2003

Smart, but not Stuffy
This is a very worthwhile read. As an introduction to the work of W.E.B. Du Bois or for someone like me who's read "The Souls of Black Folk" as well as David Levering Lewis's "Biography of a Race," this book is valuable because it personalizes some of Du Bois's scholarship and puts it in an interesting context. The scope is not limited to "The Souls of Black Folk" however, it's much broader than ...

Spectrochemical Analysis4 reviews
James D. Ingle, Stanley R. Crouch

Prentice Hall, 1988

A classic reference
Ingle and Crouch have done a wonderful job in putting together a true reference text. This is a must have text for analytical chemists who need to have a concise treatment of spectrochemical analysis. They have done a wonderful job in intergrating theory with practice for a wide variety of analytical techniques. This book was indespensible as a graduate student in the late 80's and still ...

The Artificial White Man: Essays on Authenticity2 reviews
Stanley Crouch, 2004

a needed contrarian
I have little to add to the given product description. While his views may not be popular, his observations on how culture, race and stereotypes emerge and influence one another is cogent and worth a read, especially if you think that the issues of race are of little importance to the future of our society.

Masters of American Comics8 reviews

Yale University Press, 2005

Masters all
I recently purchased The Monster of Frankenstein, Dick Briefer's Horror Comic Epic" and was so enthralled by this golden age comic that I had to have more. "Masters of Comic Art", a reexamination of pop culture comics morphed in to fine art, is a useful overview of a "who's who" in the comic world. Beautifully reproduced in full color and loaded with great art and interesting information ...
