Statistics You Can't Trust: A Friendly Guide to Clear Thinking About Statistics in Everyday Life1 review
Stephen K. Campbell, Mark V. Hall

Bovan Publishing Group, 1998

Excellent presentation of "statistics for the beginner"
Engagingly written, with clear (and usually relevant) anecdotes, the book succeeds in the attempt to present statistics as a subject available to the amateur. I especially enjoyed the examples at the end of the book, where I could check out how well I had grasped the concepts earlier presented. So many experts barrage us with statistics that attempt to influence our viewpoints, actions, ...

Size Matters: How Height Affects the Health, Happiness, and Success of Boys - and the Men They Become2 reviews
Stephen S. Hall

Houghton Mifflin, 2006

does size equal destiny?
Does physical size ultimately matter? Well, it matters to Stephen S. Hall, author of this book, a "former shrimp" and from his research, we can conclude that it matters to others as well, particularly men. With quotes ranging from Cicero to "Revenge of the Nerds", Hall takes a fresh look at how height affects the mental health of boys and men. Using research and interviews from assorted medical ...

Merchants of Immortality: Chasing the Dream of Human Life Extension4 reviews
Stephen S. Hall

Mariner Books, 2005

Meet the masters of biohope and biohype
(**** 1/2) Stephen Hall has chosen a title that represents his book very well. What he sets forth, in supple, thoughtful, smoothly readable prose, is the saga of recent advances in "life extension" - both longevity research and research into the healing and regeneration of tissues with the aid of stem cells. As his title suggests, the emphasis is on the scientists involved, and on the public face ...

Applied Econometrics: A Modern Approach Using Eviews and Microfit Revised Edition2 reviews
Dimitrios Asteriou, Stephen G. Hall

Palgrave Macmillan, 2007

Excellent first year book
I have the Applied Econometrics not revised, published in 2006. The book is excellent for first year students. It is easy to understand and the formulas are stated in a simple manner, and commented on. I believe the book is even useful for those who are doing second year econometrics, though it will not be sufficient.

A Commotion in the Blood: Life, Death, and the Immune System (The Sloan Technology Series)11 reviews
Stephen S. Hall

Holt Paperbacks, 1998

Immunotherapy for laypeople
It's a shame this great book is out of print. It's not easy going for the layperson although it is certainly more accessible than a great deal of medical information. But it IS fascinating. Early strategies of dealing with cancer by manipulating the immune system which were discovered and championed by Dr. Coley (with surprising success since even he wasn't sure exactly how they worked) were ...

Human Resource Management2 reviews
Derek Torrington, Laura Hall, ...

Financial Times Management, 2008

Now this is a good textbook
This was a simply stated book that gave common sense examples. The chapters were easy to understand without having to have your professor explain everything. There are a couple of chapters that seem like they should be reorganized, and a couple of chapters that should be put in a different order. Overall though, this is a very good book to help you understand Human Resource Management.

The Cambridge Companion to Jonathan Edwards (Cambridge Companions to Religion)1 review
George M. Marsden, Kenneth P. Minkema, ...

Cambridge University Press, 2006

Fine introduction to colonial America's greatest theologian and philosopher
I read somewhere that the essay by George Marsden "Biography" included in this edited volume is itself worth the price of the book. That may be true, but thankfully we don't have to make that decision. The remaining essays also contribute solidly to the value of the work. ORGANIZATION: After an introductory overview by the editor Stephen J. Stein, the sixteen essays that constitute the body of ...

Mapping the Next Millennium: How Computer-Driven Cartography Is Revolutionizing the Face of Science4 reviews
Stephen S. Hall

Vintage, 1993

Deserves a Nat. Bk Award; deserves to be in print
Hall takes 18 different scientific fields, circa 1990, and looks at a cutting edge of each in terms of how graphic depictions, maps, either makes the edge understandable or causes the edge to be cutting. Colored pictures and line drawings help us readers. Each essay is dense with information, is marked by a quiet wit and exceptional writing, and reflects the work of real, living, identified ...

Be My Valentine (Zebra Historical Romance)4 reviews
Constance Hall, Cheryl Holt, ...

Zebra, 2000

A great book, a good buy
Anthologies are usually a risk to buy because it is rare to like all of the stories. But with this book there is no risk; all three of the stories were excellent. "Cupid's Arrow" by Constance Hall is about a very proud young woman whose family is experiencing financial problems. So she reluctantly decides to rob a carriage not knowing that it is the new magistrate (someone she has always had ...

This vibrant anthology of ground breaking work by influential scholars, activists, performers, and visual artists is essential reading for anyone with an interest in sexuality studies. The fifteen articles--including one from Judith Butler, as well as an engaging introduction--map, contextualize, and challenge queer theory's project both within and beyond the academy. ...
