An excellent book on how to write narrative fiction
With nearly 600 reviews of this book there is very little need for any new reviews. I mainly want to record my five-star vote for the excellence of this book. I have to confess that I'm not a huge fan of Stephen King. I read very little horror fiction and as a result have only read a couple of King's books. Nonetheless, I have lately been toying with the idea of writing a fictional work of my ...

Flagship King
I had long avoided this book because of it's length. I just wasn't sure that even a great author like Stephen King could keep me captivated for that long with a stand alone novel. I was told by a co-worker that I was not a true Stephen King fan if I had not read "The Stand", and the gauntlet was thrown down. I loved this book. From start to finish I was hooked. The first section of the book ...

Ignore the "BIG NAME" near the top of the cover
If you are buying this book because it has STEPHEN KING in huge letters, you will be disappointed. Then again, maybe not because if you've been reading his piffle for the past 7 or so years, you may like the long, drawn out, torturous story that I couldn't even finish. Now, if you're NOT a King fan (and yes, there are many of us out here who are not afraid to admit we are no longer ...

...within stories, within stories, within stories...
Are Sandman fans such because they love the characters (Dream, Delirium, etc.) or because they love the writings of Neil Gaiman? I'd imagine that there are both types, and that most of us are somewhere on a continuum in-between. I mention this, because those of you who are closer to the "love Gaiman" pole, like myself, will doubtless love this collection of short stories, set in the Sandman ...

Great back story for the Dark Tower series
This was a really good book and added to the over all story of the Dark Tower story line. The illustration was great and made the story come to life. The only draw back is if you have not read the Dark Tower series you may feel as if you were left hanging.

Carrie
I've been one of Mr. King's "Constant Readers" for years. However, my reading of his tales began with Gerald's Game and, until this past year, I never read anything published before it. I now realize how unfortunate that was! The past few months have allowed me to rediscover Stephen King in an entirely new light. I finished Carrie this evening from my Kindle. (I've been THRILLED about all ...

Reach out, Reach out and kill someone
The Master of Horror strikes again, proving he's not getting older, he's getting sicker! This is another chilling novel by the man who made the horror genre come alive. Cell phones across the country start to ring, but it would be better to let the call go to voicemail. People answer their phones only to become vicious, mindless killers. Clay Riddell, an artist, is away on business. He's ...

Not Free SF Reader
Wastelands is pretty close to the perfect anthology, making just a touch over the magic 4.00 story average. For an authoritative (the editor does say he is now an expert) look at the sub-genre, it is a bit light on for analytical non-fiction. For readers, less space taken thanking your mates, more time writing about the work would be appreciated, I think. There is a fairly lengthy ...

Summer School Book Talk
I taught summer school this year, and I use this to "break the ice." We listened to the chapter about buying new shoes as a summer tradition and how "new shoes would make [him] run faster." Dandelion Wine is more memoire, although it has some elements of fantasy in it. It's a feel-good book about being a kid, enjoying summer, and recognizing that life is passing but that what's in the here and ...

MAGNIFICENT CONCEPT: The symbolic trials and tribulations of an author's quest to write and complete his creation: his book.
Stephen King the author of the Dark Tower series is of course the Gunslinger: from the first volume to the seventh. In one of the most amazing symbolic epics ever written Stephen King has documented the loneliness and creative efforts of an author in his quest (the trials and tribulations) to create and finish a new novel. The Man in Black is none other then his yet undefined creative genius ...

Best book in a great series
This is a great book. It's one of my favorite series, because it is epic fantasy told by a master of supernatural horror whose strongest talent as a writer is his ability to depict realism, particularly realistic people and human interaction -- that's a good combination. Stephen King's books feel real, which is why his monsters and things are so very creepy, because they seem like they're ...

Ruth Neary is awesome!
I have read several reviews of this book and the one negative statement that keeps popping up is the fact that a good portion of the story takes place with Jessie alone and handcuffed to the bed. In my opinion this is what makes the novel so brilliant. The fact that King can produce a fascinating story from the goings on inside an individuals head is brilliant. One of the strongest themes was ...

Ghosts, Spirits and Rose Red
Built on a Native American burial ground in Seattle in the early 20th century, Rose Red was to be a Queen among houses. Built as a wedding gift by John Rimbauer for his wife Ellen, Rose Red claims a victim even before the foundations are laid. A foreman is shot to death; his death would only be the first, however and would be far from the last. People begin to disappear. First a maid, then ...

You have to read the whole series
When I read this book, I actually thought that it was written by "another" Stephen King....someone that was using Steve's name to capitalize on his popularity. After reading the series, I am amazed by how it all comes together.
