Full Woman, Fleshly Apple, Hot Moon: Selected Poems of Pablo Neruda4 reviews
Stephen Mitchell

Harper Perennial Modern Classics, 1998

Mitchell's translation lets Neruda's voice sing off the page
Stephen Mitchell translates an assortment of Neruda's lesser known poems that rank among his personal favorites. You can tell Mitchell truly loves these works as Neruda's voice almost literally sings off the page in English. The book itself is beautifully constructed with a painting by Gaugin adorning the cover. When you hold it in your hands, you will know you have discovered something ...

Object Relations in Psychoanalytic Theory3 reviews
Jay R. Greenberg, Stephen A. Mitchell

Harvard University Press, 1983

Essential reading
This book is cited in virtually every book written on object relations theory since its publication. It gives a thorough background to the theories of all of the major contributors to object relations theory. It is brilliantly written and understandable with a basic knowledge of psychoanalytic jargon. An essential work.

The Enlightened Heart11 reviews
Stephen Mitchell

Harper Perennial, 1993

Beautiful poetry
I bought this book after reading about it in my yoga magazine thinking I could really use a good book of poems to ponder and this book is terrific. The poems really will quiet your mind. I love that such a wide array of authors are represented - from Rumi to Dogen to Emily Dickenson to Walt Whitman. A great collection. Glad I bought it.

Bhagavad Gita: A New Translation35 reviews
Stephen Mitchell

Three Rivers Press, 2002

You Gotta Get the Gita!
Okay, I realize that my title for this review is a little flip. But I really do love this book. That said, is it the best translation of the Gita ever written? I don't know. But what I do know is this: This book turns an ancient poetic text into a practical guide for living life today in a more effective way. The Gita taught me what it truly means to let go of my attachment to results . . . ...

The Enlightened Mind8 reviews
Stephen Mitchell

Harper Perennial, 1993

So many stars, one sky.
This is an excellent anthology of sacred prose. Stephen Mitchell was very ecumenical and egalitarian in his selection process. Such a lack of bias is clear evidence of his own enlightened understanding where the universality of truth is concerned. No one, no cult, no philosophy, no religion, has a patent on the ultimate source of being, on God. All anyone can do is say what God is like, not what ...

The Essential Neruda: Selected Poems17 reviews
Pablo Neruda

City Lights Publishers, 2004

A New Translation
"I became saturated with his poetry and began to translate his poems. Although there were many beautiful existing translations, many others did not flow as I felt they should and I often had interpretive differences with them." ~ Mark Eisner, translator "The Essential Neruda Selected Poems" is the best translation I've read so far. The words are alive with beauty in a way that feels authentic ...

Tao Te Ching: A New English Version (Perennial Classics)172 reviews
Lao Tzu

Harper Perennial Modern Classics, 2006

Perception shifted
I made a point of reading this just one or two pages at a time, every day or other day, to really digest what I read and not rush through it. That was probably a good thing since it can be a little repetitive, so trying to soak it all up in one sitting could have felt monotonous. But when I reached the end and I closed my copy, I thought "everyone ought to read this, and I wish I could ...

Loving What Is: Four Questions That Can Change Your Life161 reviews
Byron Katie, Stephen Mitchell

Three Rivers Press, 2003

Do The Work!
"The only time we suffer is when we believe a thought that argues with what is. When the mind is perfectly clear, what is is what we want." ~ Byron Katie "from Loving What Is" THAT, in a nutshell, is the book. If you want to argue with what is, you will suffer. Period. In fact, "If you want reality to be different than what it is, you might as well try to teach a cat to bark." :) The ...

He was a god.
My dog is named Coco. He likes to run away from home all the time. I keep a journal of his behavior. It is filled with instances of when I have given him dog biscuits and he ate them on my bed leaving crumbs all over the sheets.

Can Love Last?: The Fate of Romance over Time5 reviews
Stephen A. Mitchell

W. W. Norton & Company, 2003

Lasting Love
How can love survive despite the vagaries of hectic schedules, work and parenting pressures, aging, and boredom? That is one of the many questions Stephen Mitchell attempts to answer in Can Love Last? While considering the oft-posed questions about "chemistry," real love, and soul mates, he looks at whether you can determine if you've found "the one"; and how to keep them if you have. Dr. ...

The Book of Job13 reviews
Stephen Mitchell

Harper Perennial, 1992

Why?
To meaningfully ask the question "why?" in a religious context, one must first be familiar with Job--there is simply nothing in scripture that approaches the question of human suffering with such detail. Sadly, Mr. Mitchell correctly notes that the original book is long gone--victimized by the mistakes of translators. Yet the story remains universal; any reader can sympathize with Job's ...

The Whole World is a Single Flower: 365 Kong-ans for Everyday Life with Questions and Commentary4 reviews
Seung Sahn

Tuttle Publishing, 1992

More unanswerable questions from Korea
Wow, I can't believe that no one has ever reviewed this book; the reviews must have been lost in cyberspace. What can I say about a book that I refer to everyday since its release in 2000? I am deeply indebted to Zen Master Seung Sahn (Sŭngsan) for his life long commitment to spreading the Dharma, I miss his physical presence deeply. This collection of Kongans (Japanese: Koans) is a gift ...

Gilgamesh: A New English Version71 reviews
Stephen Mitchell

Free Press, 2006

A non-specialist's humble opinion: stop browsing and read this version!
The Epic of Gilgamesh is a classic work of humankind, a tale rich in adventure, sensuality, and psychological depth and complexity. The narrator reaches out and grabs the reader immediately by inviting him or her to look around the mighty city of Uruk, to observe its walls, temples, and gardens (in our mind's eye, if nothing else)--all the works of the man-god Gilgamesh. Yet, our picture of ...

The Gospel According to Jesus: A New Translation and Guide to His Essential Teachings for Believers and ...32 reviews
Stephen Mitchell

Harper Perennial, 1993

Grateful for this gift from Mitchell
I spent a good 15 years of my life trying to make peace with Christianity. I've struggled to appreciate the avid Christians' ability to embrace the Bible as a literal transcription of God's word. I've struggled to forgive those who applied peer pressure to me as a young teen to "accept Jesus as my personal savior." I've pondered with bewilderment the idea that God would create us with ...

This is one book I cannot live without. I can't read German, so I am grateful for the translation, and Rilke's genius is not lost in translation. :) Favorites? I can't name just one. Writing and Reporting the News1 review
Jerry Lanson, Mitchell Stephens

Oxford University Press, USA, 2007

A good introductory overview
Without question this is the best introductory journalism textbook on the market. I have used it in my classes for several years. The chapters are short but informative, and the exercises realistic. Primarily focussed on print, the discussion of broadcast journalism is sounder than that found in many books dedictaed to that subject.
