The Evil B.B. Chow and Other Stories19 reviews
Steve Almond

Algonquin Books, 2006

No Candy, Still a Treat
A book of short stories is like a box of chocolates. No, no, just kidding. But Steve Almond's second collection of short fiction, "The Evil BB Chow and Other Stories" certainly is a delicious treat. Almond most recently garnered critical acclaim for his non-fiction book, "Candy Freak," a tale of one man's quest to record (and consume) the last independent candy bars in the U.S. While not ...

My Life in Heavy Metal: Stories29 reviews
Steve Almond

Grove Press, 2003

For those who hate books, you might just love this one.
I will be the first to admit, i hate books and reading, for the most part. Sure, i enjoyed catcher in the rye, the same book that every person, or at least every teenager, loves. But "My Life in Heavy Metal" became the first book that i ever bought, solely for my own enjoyment. Introduced to me through a college freshman writing class was the short story "How to Be a Republican," one of a ...

Further Fenway Fiction: More Short Stories from Red Sox Nation2 reviews
Adam Emerson Pachter, Steve Almond, ...

Rounder Books, 2007

Von Euw stands out in this collection
Further Fenway Fiction is a labor of love, and demonstrates a passion that stretches beyond the playing field. Michelle Von Euw's story in particular highlights not only the innocence of the game in its truest form, but also of human nature. Baseball fans, Red Sox diehards, and lovers of short fiction will most certainly enjoy this collection.

Steve Almond

Harvest Books, 2005

Don't drool over this ;-)
O.M.G!! This book is fantastic. I myself have a major sweet tooth and love love love chocolate. I stumbled across this book by accident and I'm so glad I did. I can't believe the writers name is Steve Almond. He has visited many many candy factories across the country and learned things about long forgotten candy brands and products. It's actually surprisingly interesting and really ...

Dzanc Books, 2008

Fantastic collection of online content
This great anthology includes "Tattooed People" by Seth Harwood which I first experienced as part of A Long Way From Disney - just one of Seth's FREE podcasts available at sethharwood.com Seth is better known as the author of the amazing Jack Palms Crime podcasts and has gained a huge following among the online community and recently stormed the Amazon charts with the release of Jack Wakes Up on ...

(Not That You Asked): Rants, Exploits, and Obsessions42 reviews
Steve Almond

Random House Trade Paperbacks, 2008

Almond Joy (Ouch, that's a bad pun...and I bet I'm not the first to use it, either)
In some ways, this book seems a little dated and jaded - Almond takes on some easy targets - the Bush Administration, the shallowness of most bloggers, his own often-ridiculous sex life (join the club!), celebrity culture, reality TV - these are just a few. But there are four elements that, for me, elevate this work beyond the familiarity of some of the topics it covers: 1) Almond is a ...

Which Brings Me to You: A Novel in Confessions17 reviews
Steve Almond, Julianna Baggott

Algonquin Books of Chapel Hill, 2006

Great reading for pure pleasure
For the last two weeks I have spent my last waking moments curled up in bed with Jane and John, because this is one of those rare books that's so funny and thought-provoking that it deserves to be savored, in small sweet snatches. As each revealed their experiences and revelations about love, and floated them out on a river of good old chemical attraction, I got exactly what I wanted - a ...

Do Me: Sex Tales from Tin House3 reviews
Steve Almond

Tin House Books, 2007

Diverse and Excellent Erotica
This is wonderful book and I must admit I very much like the short story genre, more than the epic erotic novel. You can pick a story and start anywhere in the book. They are all great stories and each of them has a different slant. There are all sorts of styles catered for, there is even a touch of humor in there.Straight sex and adventurous sex whatever you fancy. The characters are solid and ...

Notes from the Underground: The Most Outrageous Stories from the Alternative Press2 reviews
Nancy Armstrong, Steve Almond

Chamberlain Bros., 2005

collection= versatility and uniqueness
I am studying to become a writer and would prefer to remain in the alternative media, thus, I thought reading this book would help me to understand the topics and style of alternative writing. I did enjoy this book for the most part. There are articles that I think I wouldn't have read if they were in the paper, yet there were some that blew me away. For example, a survivor of child-molestation ...

The Flash1 review

Social Disease, 2007

Mixed bag, but overall definitely worth it
This recent (2007) anthology of flash fiction, edited by Peter Wild, collects some really interesting American and British writers (this is a British project) including Rick Moody, Nicholas Royle, Joel Lane, Jonathan Lethem, Katherine Dunn, Michel Faber, Jeff Vandermeer, Paul di Filippo, Barry Yourgrau, Aimee Bender, Jeffrey Ford, and a whole lot of other writers--there's a total of 100 stories ...

Candy Freak1 review
Steve Almond, 2004

A Great Ride
Listened to this book while on a long car trip. Loved every minute of it. It's informative and funny. Mostly the latter. The reader does a spectacular job! Every time he describes a candy bar you can see it in detail and almost feel the tastes and pleasures of every bite. Be prepared to stock up on candy if you listen to this treat!
