Reaper's Gale: Book Seven of The Malazan Book of the Fallen13 reviews
Steven Erikson

Tor Books, 2008

10 stars out of 5
With every book Erikson writes I become more and more impressed. In the beginning I thought it was good writing, interesting story and world, but wasn't too sure. Book 1 was pretty good, book 2 fell a little short, but book 3 picked up and from then on each successive book got that much better, which brings us to the most recent book, by far the best so far. Erikson writes epic fantasy on ...

Tor Fantasy, 2005

AWESOME RIDE!!! LIKE ROLLERCOASTERS? YOU'LL LOVE THIS!
This book is so amazing! The scope itself is huge. I see why people say it's like George RR Martin, except the area involved is bigger. You get to see every main character and supporting character's personality in many different situations, and you never know what's going to happen, to whom, and when. One minute your liking a character and BOOM! their gone! Or a bad character seems not so ...

The Bonehunters (The Malazan Book of the Fallen, Book 6)19 reviews
Steven Erikson

Tor Books, 2007

A truly epic and colorful world...
I am utterly amazed at how well Erikson pulled this book off. It has many avenues to lose focus and to make it hard for the reader, such as the multiple plot lines and huge cast of characters. Despite all this Erikson pulls it off amazingly. He was able to keep the story flowing and there was a ton of stuff going on as the plot lines are slowly converging, just as the God's and their mortal ...

Toll the Hounds: Book Eight of The Malazan Book of the Fallen
Steven Erikson

Tor Books, 2008

In Darujhistan, the city of blue fire, it is said that love and death shall arrive dancing. It is summer and the heat is oppressive, but for the small round man in the faded red waistcoat, discomfiture is not just because of the sun. All is not well. Dire portents plague his nights and haunt the city streets like fiends of shadow. Assassins skulk in alleyways, but the quarry has turned and the hunters become the hunted. Hidden hands pluck ...

Memories of Ice (The Malazan Book of the Fallen, Book 3)37 reviews
Steven Erikson

Tor Fantasy, 2006

Brilliant continuance of an amazingly deep story
Memories of Ice was an intriguing look into yet another peril facing the people of Erikson's fantastic world. The Pannion Domin presents an immediate and deadly threat to the Malazan Empire as it devours the continent. This story follows the bravery of the last remaining Bridgeburners, their brave sergeant Whiskeyjack, and the hesitant Cpt. Ganoes Paran. A tangent of the story focuses on the ...

Midnight Tides (The Malazan Book of the Fallen, Book 5)7 reviews
Steven Erikson

Tor Fantasy, 2007

Perhaps the best in the series
Midnight Tides is the fifth book of Steven Erikson's 10-volume series The Malazan Book of the Fallen. Unlike other multi-volume big-book fantasy writers, Erikson's production has been consistent: about a volume per year and he has completed 7, of which five are available through his US publisher, Tor. This book is somewhat different in tone and feel from the first four. This is partly ...

Gardens of the Moon (The Malazan Book of the Fallen, Vol. 1)221 reviews
Steven Erikson

Tor Fantasy, 2005

an excellent debut, with a few minor comments
Much of the fantasy writings out there are intended to be a series (Guy Kay the exception that comes quickest to mind). This is what makes the fantasy genre one of the few with the potential to build a lore for it's world, and to develop truly epic storytelling. Obviously I enjoy that aspect or I wouldn't read fantasy. The reason I say this is that this 'series' storytelling is difficult ...

House of Chains (The Malazan Book of the Fallen, Book 4)26 reviews
Steven Erikson

Tor Books, 2006

The more I read the more I like Erikson
The further I have gotten in this series the more I like his books and writing. His characters and dialogue are great and the plots seem to flow better now than they did in the first couple of books. There is still some confusion with multiple warrens/worlds,characters, powers, etc. that leave a lot of questions but I think I am begining to feel that is a more realistic approach to ...

The Malazan Book of the Fallen Set (Books 1 - 4) (Gardens of the Moon, Dead House Gates, Memories of Ice and ...
Steven Erikson

Tor Fantasy, 2004

In this sprawling fantasy epic of the Malazan empire at war with its enemies and itself. Canadian newcomer Erikson offers many larger-than-life scenes and ideas, but his characters seem to shrink to fit the story. Perhaps they need to stay small enough for the reader to keep them all in mind. Jumping often between plot lines, the novel follows Ganoes Stabro Paran from his boyhood dreaming of soldiers to his escape from imperial service. Paran ...

Blood Follows15 reviews
Steven Erikson

PS Publishing, 2003

Bloodchillingly brilliant
Superb storytelling which sucks you in in the first page and actually makes you feel sorry for the manservant but almost jealous at the same time. Amazing characterization, but only to be expected as he set the highest standard possible with the Malazan series, short but 'always leave them wanting more'. Along with 'The Healthy Dead' well worth the money for a fan. I hope for more of the ...

The Healthy Dead: A Tale of Bauchelain and Korbal Broach10 reviews

Night Shade Books, 2005

Magnificent Evil - 'cause it's fun
This may well be a book that is suitable for a specific kind of person only. You may know Steven Erikson as the writer of the 'Malazan book of the fallen' series. Expect something completely different... Where the book of the fallen is characterized by incredibly grim and moody atmosphere (YAY! Gotta love that), 'The Healthy Dead' strikes me as the comic relief Steven needed while writing his ...

Simply In Awe
I was an anthropology major in college with only 9 credit hours to go then I switched my major. Reading Erikson remindes me of why I took anthropology in the first place. The scope in which this man writes within simply leaves my jaw wide open. This book is such a page turner as it slowly reveals the making of many great characters to come. I've read every book of his to date and each one (book) ...

Corgi, 2008

Breath taking series
The Malazan Books of the Fallen follow an enormous cast of characters stuggling within, for, against, and despite the Malazan Empire, under the empress Laseen. Erikson goes to incredible depths of detail, crafting a tragic world full of emotion, politcs, magic, gods, and artillery. He touches upon the lives of small individuals and vast countries and empires, and brings them to life. It is ...

Tor Fantasy, 2008

The Seven Cities Rebellion has been crushed. Sha'ik is dead. One last rebel force remains, holed up in the city of Y'Ghatan and under the fanatical command of Leoman of the Flails. The prospect of laying siege to this ancient fortress makes the battle-weary Malaz 14th Army uneasy. For it was here that the Empire's greatest champion Dassem Ultor was slain and a tide of Malazan blood spilled. A place of foreboding, its smell is of death. But ...

new setting, different perspective same incredible story
awesome. do yourself a favour and get into this series. Erickson will throw you for a loop every time. And he actually seems to be sticking with his publishing deadlines. A massive series filled with horror, brutality, darkness and war but also humour, faith, hope and awe. This is a great 4th book that leaves you dying for the 5th.
