Tearing the Silence : On Being German in America17 reviews
Ursula Hegi, 1998

Tearing the Silence
Ursula Hegi must have been squirming during some of these interviews, as the subjects were sometimes brutally and tastelessly honest about their feelings. I found that honesty a draw for me to keep reading. Having read 'Stones From the River', and a few other Hegi novels, I was familiar with her style. However, she mostly lets her interview subjects guide the way; she does great with this ...

The Vision Of Emma Blau47 reviews
Ursula Hegi

Audioworks, 2000

Kudos to Ms Hegi..
She is fast becoming one of my favorite authors. This book is filled with so many emotions and events my mind is still going over everything. Def a book that stays with you for awhile. I wanted to comfort the characters and felt as if I was myself living at the Wasserburg. I do agree that the characters had a sad tone to them, but none the less, made for a book I couldn't put down!

not a disappointment
Some books disappoint on a second reading, but not this one. When it came time for my book club to read this book I was very excited, because I remembered that I really liked it the first time I read it. And I was not disappointed. I think I liked this book at least as much the second time around as the first. This is a story with two contrasting themes. One is difference. Told mostly from the ...

Leaving Brooklyn (Rediscovery)2 reviews
Lynne Sharon Schwartz

Hawthorne Books, 2007

We're all still leaving Brooklyn
I loved Leaving Brooklyn, and I think I, like the main character Audrey, am still trying to get free even though I have never been there. Brooklyn is that safe and settled fantasy we were taught to believe in as children and cling to, beyond reason, as adults. Audrey is an outrageous character--ambitious and calculated--fully believable as a fifteen year old. I relate to her and the ...

What a great book!
This being my 5th Ursula Hegi book, I'm a bit biased. Ironically,it was the first I purchased. Having read one chapter of this book I realized I liked the author's thought process and went out and bought her earlier works. Then I read them first. Odd, but there it is. MANY VOICES: This is a most unusual book. Not so much in the sense that the author addresses the reader and discusses plot ...

Hotel of the Saints6 reviews
Ursula Hegi, 2001

Unique & Sensitive Modern Day Literature
Hegi's Book "Hotel Of The Saints" cried out to be read from the shelf of an airport bookstore. Almost radiating its fine contents the book immediately invokes a feeling of question just from the title. But once inside, the reader finds an unexpectedly fine rendition in many hues. The book is a collection of short stories, most of which have been previously published in other journals. However, ...

Floating in My Mother's Palm21 reviews
Ursula Hegi

Touchstone, 1998

Superb Articulation, Contemporary Literature
Ursula Hegi uses her usual hypnotic prose in this book, which flows like the water in the rivers that she loves, even as fast as 8 kilometers per hour like the Rhein. The stories continue to flow seamlessly, through her whole book. Yes, "stories," as even though the book is a novel, it is composed of chapters, which are in fact free standing stories in and of themselves. All the stories are ...

Sacred Time13 reviews

Touchstone, 2003

One of my favorite books!
I love all of Ms. Hegi's books and this one was no exception! We start out with a young boy and his point of view. He has an Italian family and they are very amusing. He is an only child, but he has two cousins whom are twins. They are girls though. The girls and his Aunt Floria have no where to go. So they end up living with Anthony and his family. What happens will mark everyone for the rest of ...

I found parts of this book to be a bit vague and confusing. What exactly was the worst thing? And who is the I? Perhaps both of those questions are meant to be left unanswered, which is fine. But there's a lot of other distracting stuff in this book, including the commentary of radio psychologists and the fact that the confession (for lack of a better word) of one of the characters is cut off ...
