J.G. Ballard (Re-Search 8/9)5 reviews
V. Vale

Re/Search Publications, 1984

The Ultimate Introduction
This book is an amazing introduction to the works of a man with great thoughts. The introductory interview contains almost too much information and opinions; it is hard to wrap your mind around. But for those of you up to the challenge, it is great reading. Ballard's fiction and non-fiction excerpts are all enticing and the biography is very interesting, giving justice to the very exciting life ...

Re/Search #14: Incredibly Strange Music, Volume I (Re/Search ; 14)5 reviews
V. Vale

Re/Search Publications, 1993

Strange book for strange collectors!
This book was good therapy- it was reasuring to find that there were many people out there like me that spent a great deal of their spare time combing thriftstores and yardsales to find Martin Deny albums or twisted versions of Beatles tunes sung by washed up celebrities. Here's a simple test to see if you'd like this book: you're at the local thrift store when from the corner of your eye you ...

RE/Search 6/7: Industrial Culture Handbook5 reviews

RE/Search Publications, 2006

NUTS, SCREWS AND BOLTS
This book has a great introduction by music journalist Jon Savage, but I found the articles/interviews a bit too academic, overlong and quite literally, exhausting. It's hard to believe this book was published 17 years ago - industrial music as a genre only became really popular in the early 90s with Ministry, Nine Inch Nails etc. Of these artists Throbbing Gristle, Chris & Cosey, Cabaret ...

ZINES! Volume One: Incendiary Interviews with Independent Publishers (Zines!)3 reviews
V. Vale

Re/Search Publications, 1999

This Book Changed My Life!!
V. Vale has published a masterpiece. A slice of otherwise discarded and forgotten culture is preserved in this fantastic book. I wonder what's become of these zine makers since this book was published? I need more, maybe Zines 3 will surface! V. Vale is a true archivist of underground culture and should be rewarded for his efforts.

Pranks 22 reviews

Re/Search Publications, 2006

Revive your prankster spirit!
Pranks 2 is a timely set of interviews with tricksters who help us see the arbitrary boundaries and nonsensical rules that we so often simply accept without question. Stories from the likes of Margaret Cho, The Yes Men and the Billboard Liberation Front (and many more) explore the rebellious spirit and authority-questioning that has long been a vital part of the American experience, but seem to ...

SteamPunk Live!: A Retrofuturist Dream
Oliver Lowe

Re/Search Publications, Pollinator Press, 2008

Steampunk is building steam. Its DIY projects are featured on YouTube and Burning Man is alight with steampunk-inspired art. Even the mainstream media is catching on. But what is this whimsical phenomenon, and why has it suddenly seized the zeitgeist? Simply put, steampunk seeks to humanize the modern technological experience by resurrecting overlooked technologies and design elements from bygone centuries: Jules Verne meets Steve Jobs. ...

J.G. Ballard Conversations5 reviews
J.G. Ballard

Re/Search Publications, 2005

sparkling bathers in near-futuristic water-slide playground utopias somehow magically growing out of vast deserts
The work that has earned J.G. Ballard his reputation as a prophet of the present runs the full gamut from the perverse to the catastrophic, from the utterly Surreal to the deeply personal. In J.G. Ballard Conversations, a new collection of interviews from RE/Search, Ballard exercises his trenchant observations live and uncensored. Running jags on the politics of paranoia are illumed with ...

The Portable Ballard
In J.G. Ballard Quotes, author Ballard and Quotes editor V. Vale continue a relationship which stretches back twenty years. Along with being the finest writer of our time, Ballard is a keen social observer, as well as a thinker of unique and visionary perspective: "Does the future still have a future?" "The open coffins lay empty, ready to catch the American pilots who would soon fall ...

Bob Flanagan: Supermasochist (People Series)1 review

powerHouse Books, 2000

You will not get off on this book -- you will grow with it
For most people who do BDSM or any of its components, the motivation is fun and hot sex. For Bob Flanagan it was a way to exploit the body that was betraying him through illness and make himself as much of a master of it as he could be. Six interviews are the bulk of the book -- each accompanied with pictures from his life. This is also a brief collection of his art and an interview with his ...

burn the ivory towerists
This book presents many unique ideas on being a woman. Juno interviews a variety of artists on life, sexuality, sensuality... femininity and masculinity. From the cultural critiques of bell hooks to Annie Sprinkle's smiling cervix, new brilliance and hope is imparted. If you are looking for inspiration and wisdom from activists by trade, rather than some ivory tower dworkinite, look no further.

Pranks! (Re-Search # 11)10 reviews

Best book EVER! Change my life for the better.
I love this book. I thought I was the only weirdo out there, but this book inspires me to be weirder. Great interviews with Dead Kennedy singer Jello Biafra, Abbie Hoffman and Henry Rollins. One of the few books I pick up weekly, even though I've read it from cover to cover many times. Still cracks me up.

William Burroughs, Brion Gysin, Throbbing Gristle (Re/Search #4/5)3 reviews

V/Search, 1982

Dr. Timothy Leary's Favorite Photo of Burroughs
The W.S. Burroughs photo in this issue was the late Dr. Timothy's favorite of Bill Burroughs--the great one with the gun in his hand. This alone is worth the price. Great photo, especially with the interview of Burroughs and the part about the murder of wife Joan in Mexico City. "There are no accidents" Burroughs liked to say all the rest of his life, after the 'accidental' shooting of Joan.
