Bringing the Rain to Kapiti Plain17 reviews
Verna Aardema

Dial Press, 1981

Incredible Response!
I bought this book after having it recommended while taking a graduate level children's literature class. I was not disappointed! I grabbed this book to read aloud if I had extra time while substitute teaching for a kindergarten class. I thought the children would be more attracted to the rhyme and pattern of the words so imagine my surprise when the book sparked a lengthy discussion between 5 ...

Sebgugugu the Glutton1 review
Verna Aardema

William B Eerdmans Publishing Co, 1993

Fun to say and fun to read.
Sebgugugu The Glutton is not only fun to say, it is an excellent read. Verna Aardema's use of Bantu animal sounds lends an authentic air to this tale. In addition, this story teaches children valuable lessons about pride and selfishness. Nancy Clouse's illustrations are bold and engaging. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for an excellent read aloud.

Verna Aardema

Demco Media, 1991

A delightful, funny, touching tale for all ages!
This book is laugh-out-loud-hilarious. The first time I read this story, I was giggling so hard that I could barely speak. A very cute story for young and old alike.

Who's in Rabbit's House11 reviews
Verna Aardema

Perfection Learning Prebound, 1982

One of our very favorites
We found this by chance at the library and it is now one of our favorite books. During the three weeks we had the book we read it over 20 times and looked through it often. And we've checked it out a few times since then, too. Hmm, maybe we should buy it! My boys have acted out the story repeatedly and I hear them quietly reciting the story to themselves. The pictures are fantastic - ...

Verna Aardema

Warne, 1983

A story that can't be topped.
The Vingananee and the Tree Toad was such a favorite of my son's that I ended up memorizing it. It is a story I still tell to children of all ages. I hope it will be republished soon! Now it is time to pass it on to the next generation!

Anansi Does The Impossible!: An Ashanti Tale (Aladdin Picture Books)4 reviews
Verna Aardema

Aladdin, 2000

Anansi Does the Impossible
This book was such a delight. My first grade class could not wait to hear what Anansi would do next. For the first time, Anansi uses his trickery to help someone other than himself! It was refreshing to have the author show how Anani's wife, Aso, helped him to reach his goal. I think my readers learned a lot of valuable lessons from this story.

Tales from the Story Hat2 reviews
Verna Aardema

Putnam Pub Group Library, 1960

Great stories from a great teacher, each has a lesson in it.
Mrs. Aardema was a great teacher, she shared her stories from this book with her class of first grade students while she worked on collecting them. She really did have story hats, depending what kind of story she was about to tell depended on which hat she would put on. Re-reading this book as brought back the many lessons and good times I recall from first grade in Mrs, Aadremna's class and ...

Koi and the Kola Nuts : A Tale from Liberia2 reviews
Verna Aardema

Aladdin, 2003

Koi and the Kola Nuts
I am a first and second grade teacher and I just happened to show the video of this book during a unit on Africa. What a fun story! The main character is a kind, generous person who feels he has been treated badly by the people of his village. The text is predictable so the children sort of know what's coming and they love it! They particularly enjoy the large, fat lady of the new village ...

Dragonfly Books, 1998

Tricking the Trickster: Borreguita and the Coyote
It's tough to tell who's the underdog in this colourful folk tale full of character and cleverness: the hungry coyote or the spunky lamb. We love them both!

Knopf Books for Young Readers, 1991

Ika-o, Bwa-wa, Swe-o, Ta-ka
These are the oft repeated, rhythmic sounds of Bowane walking, Embenga flapping, Nguma slithering, and Ulu waddling - the four of them traveling to Tondo. So what's going on here? This is how it all starts: "One day in the town of Tondo, Bowane the civet cat met a beautiful feline he wanted for a wife. The cat was willing. And her father agreed to the marriage and set a certain bride ...

Verna Aardema, Diane Dillon, ...

Dial, 1998

Por Que Zumban Los Mosquitos En Los Oidos De LA Gente
This book charmed our family for quite a long time. It is a retelling of an African tale which traces the beginings of the mosquito's buzz. The disasterous effects involve many different animals with many different reactions. This tale is sure to amuse and delight any and all readers.

Why Mosquitoes Buzz in People's Ears20 reviews
Verna Aardema

Dial, 1975

My favorite picture book
This was my favorite picture book as a child and now, as an adult, it still is. I think it is incredibly difficult to write a picture book, and I view it as a true craft. What makes a good picture book in my opinion? Unique artwork, an intriguing tale, and storytelling style. This book has it all. The artwork is simple, bold, and magical, the story engages you right away, and the repetitive style ...

Bimwili and the Zimwi6 reviews
Verna Aardema

Demco Media, 1992

Bimwili and the Zimwi Book Reiew
Bimwili and the Zimwi Book Review Bimwili and the Zimwi by Verna Aarden is a good book. It is about a green ugly monster named Zimwi and a little girl named Bimwili. My favorite part was when Bimwili's family put sand in the drum and while the monster was fetching water, they got Bimwili back. That was funny!! I learned that you should always keep track of your stuff. My other favorite part ...

A Bookworm Who Hatched (Meet the Author)2 reviews
Verna Aardema

R.C. Owen, 1993

An autobiography that actually appeals to children!
This book is a wonderful way to get young readers interested in biographies. Most literature of this sort is too long for young children to appreciate, but this one is short and simple with wonderful illustrations. It is also a great way to teach children to write from what they know; therefore it is very useful in the elementary classroom.

This for That1 review

Wrong country
This has got to be "A Togo Tale" since there are no giraffes or rabitts in Tonga. Correct the mistake for future shoppers.

Why Mosquitoes Buzz in People's Ears (Picture Puffins)3 reviews
Verna Aardema

Topeka Bindery, 1999

Brilliant Exploration of Cause and Effect
The book was the Caldecott Medal winner in 1976 for the best illustrated children's book of that year. The book is a retold version of a West African folk tale which will charm anyone who hears it. This book is not only good for parents to read to their children, it is also appropriate for use in the classroom for K - 2nd grade. The book subtly explores the unseen hand of causation to expand ...
