An easy to read edition of the Aeneid
If you're reading this, you don't need a review of the contents of the Aeneid...the book itself is light in weight but well constructed and in easy to read type. A very good reading or classroom copy.

Fortune favors the bold
David West renders this classical work accessible with a flare and sensibility that is truly rare. In so doing he brings this masterpiece from the realm of scholars into the hearts and minds of students worldwide. West captures the pure power and scale and grandeur of Virgil through his enormous talent for rendering epic poetry into prose. And for me the words ring true through the accessible ...

Beautiful translation of a Classic
Fitzgerald's version of the Aeneid is literature in its own right. Readable without being sing-songy, classic without being stilted, this translation kept me hooked on the Aeneas story long after high school Latin class ended at Book 6, and it stirred my imagination to such an extent that I got the impudent idea to emulate him in The Laviniad: An Epic Poem. And as for the poem itself, this ...

The Loeb series continues to deliver excellent translations
Just for those who have never seen a Loeb-it has the original Latin (or Greek) on one side with the translation on the following page. The Loeb series are known for their excellent translations and are vital to any researcher or historian who wants to return to the orginal for their primary source. Virgil's Georgics alone make this book a necessity (the Georgics used to be standard reading ...

5 Stars or more!
I recommend this book for any Latin 3, or Ap Class! The vocabulary fold out in the back is very useful! Although some may argue Barbara Boyd's Book 10 and 12 Pallas and Turnus book is exactly the same, the vocabulary lists are scarce. Pharr also has vocabulary on the pages you are translating, that do not occur as often. He also has interesting points that refer to the latin in interpretation, ...

Excellent Reference Book
This is not a "how-to" book; it is an excellent reference book to keep within reach when you are working. The older books are so obscure, so difficult to try to understand (I am thinking of the Doerner book in particular) and based on speculation about the techniques and materials used by the masters of the past. Mr. Elliott has kept abreast of discoveries by conservators in the major museums ...

Excellent Rendition of a Classic
I don't think that anyone could ask for a better presentation of Virgil's classic. Fagles's translation is scintillating. When I listen to a work like this I generally simultaneously read or consult a number of translations, and Fagles definitely has created a wondrous and exceptional work in English. Simon Callow's rendition is simultaneously exhilarating and haunting. Highly recommended.

Reader-Friendly Version of the Classic
First, I'm not qualified to opine on whether Mandelbaum's translation is true to the Latin. I struggled with Virgil's complex poetry as a 4th year Latin student and have no idea if Mandelbaum gets it right. But this translation is eminently readable, retaining the feel of epic poetry. I have the feeling that any flaws in Mandelbaum's rendering reflect shortcomings in Virgil's original text. ...

When Gods intervene...
DOOMED LOVE is a story of Gods, the fall of Troy and a love that just couldn't be because it wasn't meant to be in the destiny of Aeneas and Dido. The book is four parts in total: the first one tells how Trojan hero Aeneas escapes from the sacking of Troy and makes his way to Italy. During the voyage that lasted six years, a storm drives him to Carthage, where he meets the queen, Dido. The ...

Loeb to the rescue
Roman society was enamoured of Greek culture -- many of the best 'Roman' things were Greek; the major gods were derivative of the Greek pantheon; philosophy, literature, science, political ideals, architecture -- all this was adopted from the Greeks. It makes sense that, at the point of their ascendancy in the world, they would long for an epic history similar to the Homeric legends; the Iliad ...

Life in Zuni -- by an insider
This is a magnificent book, written with skill, sensitivity, insight and the gentle teasing humor that is characteristic of Zuni. After reading it, anyone will easily understand why Tony Hillerman is still an "outsider" to many Native Americans. My dealings with the Zunis began in 1967, when I began writing stories about some aspects of life in Zuni and was honored enough to be the recipient of ...

Exceptionally good rendition of Virgil's masterpiece.
Let me preface my remarks by saying that the true purist of classic literature may well be turned off by this volume. I however, am not a literary purist, so I render my judgment on this book as one who reads for the sheer pleasure of enjoying great literature. With that out of the way, on to the review itself. I thought professor David West did a masterful job of adding life to an already ...

Only half a book
This book is AMAZING, everything is as it's promised, interlinear and thus, word-for-word. I had, simply, one problem: it's only the FIRST HALF of the Aeneid, and doesn't cover books 7-12. This is disappointing, mainly because the description doesn't explain this.

Georgics is a book to savor
Virgil, a Roman poet who lived over 2000 years ago, writes with the same passion and vigor as Shakespeare. However, Virgil's language is Latin and his subject is country life. Peter Fallon presents this new translation of Virgil's Georgics. He calls the work, "a hymn to peace and people." The Georgics contains four small books. This entire edition - complete with introduction, translator's ...

Frederick Ahl's new translation captures the excitement, poetic energy, and intellectual force of the original in a way that has never been done before. Ahl has used a version of Virgil's ancient hexameter, a swift-moving six-beat line varying between twelve and seventeen syllables, to reproduce the original poetry in a thrillingly accurate and engaging style. This is an Aeneid that the first-time reader can grasp and enjoy, and whose rendition ...

A Unique View of an Essential Creator in the world of Popular Music
I love this book! It finally brings to light for the average popular music consumer as well as the scholarly directed the vital function that has made the producer the king of the studio. We members of the business side of popular music have recognized the financial rewards that come to producers from the likes of Phil Spector and Leiber and Stoler on to the producers of more current rap, hip ...

Very good resource
This is a very good source of information on low fat cooking. My family responded pleasently to many of the recipies although some were a little bland. The important thing is that this book teaches you how to make your own low fat dishes by substituting the stuff with high fat content in your favorite recipies with low fat ingredients. I especially liked the section devoted to learning and ...

"Fated to be an Exile..."
[This review relates to the wondrous Penguin Classics edition of THE AENEID, "Tranlated into English Prose with an Introduction by W.F.Jackson Knight."] If Virgil could lead the poet Dante through the wasteland and Inferno at the end of the Middle Ages, perhaps the poet Virgil, aided by the skill and inspiration of the translator W.F.Jackson Knight, might perform the same needed function for ...
