The Day It Rained Militia:Huck's Defeat and the Revolution in the South Carolina Backcountry, May-July 17803 reviews
Michael C. Scoggins

History Press, 2005

A thoroughly researched in-depth look
Michael Scoggins' The Day It Rained Militia has a foreword from author Walter Edgar. Having already read Edgar's well-publicized Partisans and Redcoats: The Southern Conflict That Turned the Tide of the American Revolution which covers much of the same material, this reviewer finds it appropriate to compare the two books. Unlike Partisans and Redcoats, which just seemed ro retread over the same ...

The South Carolina Encyclopedia4 reviews

University of South Carolina Press, 2006

Comprehensive. Best of the bunch.
These types of books are becoming popular. You can buy them for quite a few cities, states and regions now: Chicago, Texas, North Carolina, South Carolina, Appalachia, etc... As you might expect, any attempt to cram hundreds of years of history, millions of diverse people and hundreds of places into a thousand pages or so needs to be appreciated for breadth rather than depth. Don't come here ...

South Carolina: A History22 reviews
Walter Edgar

University of South Carolina Press, 1998

A must read for any South Carolina resident
As a resident of SC for nearly twenty-five years, I was delighted to find a readable, comprehensive history of our state! Dr. Edgar does a wonderful job of inter-weaving the various aspects of SC history into a fine tapestry; he relates economic conditions to religious culture to the political climate to family life to economic conditions... Of special interest to me were the chapters dealing ...

First Responder Handbook: Law Enforcement Edition1 review
Andrea A. Walter, Marty Rutledge, ...

Delmar Cengage Learning, 2003

Best book of its kind
I have to say that in my 13 years in the fire and emergency services, this is the best book of its kind. It ceratinly beats the book Garry Briese put out for EMS a number of years ago as Ms. Walter has edited a magnificent tome. I think all public safety would use this as their guide to being a First Responder.

Palmira Brummett, Robert Edgar, ...

Longman, 2000

World Civilizations 1311 & 1312 (I.II) Course Textbook
In 2004, we had already been using the tenth edition of this text, now this new version (eleventh) has just a few different things in regards to chapter placement and topic information. I have enjoyed using this textbook in my courses over the years, we have covered approximately 85-90% of the topics in the book during the regular semesters. We have broken the book down into two sections. The ...

Great for nostalgia.
In the 1930's this was a standard for all (or most) grade schools in Minnesota. It brings back great memories.

This is an excellent textbook for physiology. Makes you think. Instead of memorizing you get to put your knowledge to use. Answers give you reasons. Great addition to any physiology class.

Civilization Past & Present, Volume II: From 1300, Chapters 14-36 -- Begins with the Renaissance (9th Edition)3 reviews
Pamela Brummett, Robert Edgar, ...

Longman, 1999

Decent, concise overview of world history
I looked for a long time to find a decent world history; one that was neither 10,000 pages nor painfully dry. This is the best I found. It is a very readable book of reasonable length. The authors make good use of sidebars with thought-provoking bits of literature which are scattered throughout the overall history. They also make a good attempt at discussing underlying causes and patterns ...

Partisans and Redcoats : The Southern Conflict That Turned the Tide of the American Revolution33 reviews
Walter B. Edgar, 2002

Short overview of the Revolution in South Carolina
Walter Edgar's "Partisans and Redcoats: The Southern Conflict That Turned the Tide of the American Revolution" is a short, readable history of the many small-scale Revolutionary battles in South Carolina. It is well-written and well-researched, but one of the biggest flaws is that it is too cursory of a treatment of the subject. During the Revolutionary War, South Carolina was the key to the ...

comment on prior review
The man who made the review before me was most helpful - it inspired me to buy the book! He is obviously not a historian and is unaware that it is stories/myths/religion which impact a civilization's identity. This book is superbly put to together, and I recommend its companion edition, which is a collection of primary sources. If you read between the lines of the prior review, as I did, you ...
