The leadership Author Looks Within
Warren Bennis is a prolific writer on leadership, having penned Leaders and On Becoming a Leader amongst other books. In this books, he turns inward reflecting on the lessons involved in analyzing his own life. He willingly covers the negative experiences in his life, including an experience where he offered a partial resignation in protest of administrative policy. This is not a good first ...

A Great One!
Of all the books I have read on leadership, I will have to put this one in the top five. Bennis and Nanus have masterly laid out the essential principles of leaders and have also substantiated them with poignant examples. Their revision is greatly welcome by those of us who enjoy reading leadership literature. I highly recommend this book.

Old Wine, New Bottle
Bennis has written almost 30 books thus far, most of them on the subject of leadership. Those who have already read several of them will find no "new tricks" in this book and may, in fact, share my discomfort with any use of the word "tricks" other than in the quite specific "old dogs" context. The last thing our world needs is having more tricksters in positions of leadership but we do need ...

Self mastery and spiritual journey
"On Becoming a Leader" is best described as an in depth devotional that evokes reflection on leadership. This book, as other studies of leadership, cannot be considered a science because it is not falsifiable. Bennis does not present any data, in statistical or case study form, which demonstrated that his theory was of benefit to a significant number of the leaders he described a priori. His ...

"Crucibles" That Create Exceptional Leaders of All Ages
Note: This is a revised and updated reissue of Warren G. Bennis and Robert J. Thomas' previously published Geeks & Geezers. The review that follows is of that book whose insights are essentially the same in the reissue. I have read all and reviewed most of the books which Bennis has authored or co-authored. My opinion is that this is the most thought-provoking as yet produced by the ...

A very useful framework for thinking through judgment and leadership
If you are a manager who wants to develop the skills of executive management, this book is for you. The authors provide a methodology that is not simple, but still quite understandable. It would be ideal for a course of MBA or Executive MBA students wanting to get a framework for decision making. The book has 13 chapters and then a handbook. The handbook is designed to help you take the ...

Great edition of diverse thinking on leadership
This work is a tribute to Warren Bennis, a celebration of his career. In praising him, he challenged those around him to address issues that continue to interest and perplex him. And, despite his years of experience and two million books of his own in print, the questions that remain are often simple and profound. Answering these questions are top researchers, professors, commentators and ...

This is one in a series of several dozen volumes which comprise the "Harvard Business Review Paperback Series." Each offers direct, convenient, and inexpensive access to the best thinking on the given subject in articles originally published by the Harvard Business School Review. I strongly recommend all of the volumes in the series. The individual titles are listed at this Web site: ...

Great for helping non-technical managers understand technical teams
If you're an IT manager, you should definitely have (and read!) a copy of the excellent book "Leading Geeks" by Paul Glen. It talks a lot about "common traits" of folks who are drawn to technology work, and what they mean from a management point of view, including how to leverage those traits to your team's advantage, rather than fighting an uphill battle against them. IT managers who read ...

Feelin' the Late 'Eighties Burnout...
Mitroff and Bennis' _The Unreality Industry_ is about the nature of unreality and how the manufacturing of unreality is taking over America. Needless to state, TV is the primary medium of unreality, with the disconnected, a-historical context which it presents its news and entertainment material. The authors take care to outline the dichotomy between reality and unreality. Reality is very ...

Easily comprehensible, though too simplified
The book gives a simple, hands-on overview about basic steps of one of the many so-much-talked-about management methods - Business Reengineering. The book uses outline method in describing the main steps to be taken in reengineering process. Therefore it may sometimes lack detailed reasoning of the background. However, with the help of handful of examples and illustrations, Bennis and Mische ...

Several insightful and practically applicable info, almost all from Townsend. Theoretical info provided by Bennis is of little use. Geeks & Geezers by Warren G. Bennis and Robert J. Thomas is about how Era, Values, and Defining Moments Shape Leaders. And it does an excellent job of pointing out the differences between our generations. The Right CEO and COO Pairings Can Accomplish More
The title of this book is a little misleading. I assumed that the book was about co-CEOs, something that is usually a disaster waiting to happen. In fact, the book is about partnerships of complementary talents where one person is willing to work hard out of the limelight. Not all of the examples are business examples either. The authors also look at Chairman Mao and Chou En-lai, President ...

Apparently another reviewer agrees with Ecclesiastes that there is nothing new under the sun and I agree with both of them. There is nothing new in this book nor does Bennis make that claim.
