Shell Shock

A compelling study of the effects of war on the human mind.
The book focuses largely on the First World War, where the term shell shock originated and and attempts were first made to understand it's concept. The book recounts, through many personal stories how the whole notion of mental suffering was often regarded as a form of cowardice, with many innocents suffering the ultimate punishment/shame, purely due to a lack of understanding of the mental and ...

Great!
A big, long, fun read. Much of the action centres around book publishing, which is a great topic for any book lover. Best part of the book is when authors discuss the merit of Amazon reviews. Characters are very likable and very hateble, and action is fast moving and insteresting. After reading this one, I want to read of all Holden's books.

"legio patria nostra"
You read this book and ask yourself, "Is this true, did this really happen?" But of course it's true. Only an honest person could bare their soul as does Susan Travers, with the brilliantly sensitive prose of co-author Wendy Holden. The story is spell-binding as our heroine bounces from battlefield to boudoir with breathtaking élan. So many words fall short- courageous, brave, intrepid, ...

Enjoyable Read
Wendy Holden entertains with her witty writing and, as I am a woman, I never feel so "girly" as I do when I read the tales of her heroines. This portrayal isn't as clever as some of Holden's other protagonists but the pages fly by.

Great Read
I thought this was a great book. The Eagles is one of my favorites. I could not put the book down. It reveals a lot of insight into the band. My husband read this and then two more people at his work read this book also and thought is was good.

Good as Goldie!
Goldie's autobiography is a spiritual journey through her life - its touching and sincere accounts of life-changing events gives the reader a unique view into the life of a movie icon. What you realize is that Goldie is one of us - yes, an amazingly accomplished actress, but also a loyal friend, a loving mom, and a genuine, down-to-earth person. Most noteworthy is the fact that Goldie did ...

Astonishingly, laugh outloud funny!
I purchased this book at St. Pancras station in London, needing a good fat read for the plane ride home to San Francisco. I had no idea that this was "chick lit" (a term I just learned after reading reviews of Ms. Holden's books). Author Wendy Holden has a wonderfully acute sense of the absurd - I really pity those complaining readers who whine that the plots of her books are outlandish. Word ...

Vive La Marthe
On October 7 and 8, 2006, C-SPAN 2 featured this book and author on Book TV. The author, now in her mid 90s, spoke in impeccable English for about one hour without notes. Because she used the active voice, her adventures were easy to follow. It was a tour de force. Her parents lived in Alsace when it was part of Germany. But she and her five older siblings grew up in Alsace after WWI when it ...

What we do to turn a buck
The book (on which the film was based) is, at the same time, tragic, funny and moving. Full of the dark, working-class humor of the north of England, it tells the story of a group of unemployed men who decide that emulation of the Chippendales would be a good way to turn a buck. Sadly, these anti-heroes lack the skill or the physique of their well-muscled counterparts but decide, nevertheless, to ...

Very entertaining - 4.5 stars
I honestly don't see what all the bad reviews are for. This is probably the funniest book I've read in my life. I don't read many books as I often get bored halfway through; but I couldn't put this one down. Very highly recommended.

Just for fun !
I do not have any idea why the rating for this book is so low. I thoroughly enjoyed this funny read. Maybe the reviewers need to locate their sense of humor. To me, this was far better than "The Nanny Diaries."

Beyond Funny!
I really like Wendy Holden's books, especially The Wives of Bath. I was wait-listed to get this one before it was published. It was worth the wait! This novel is charming, has a great plot, and is very, very funny. The classes in The School for Husbands are so delightful, I laughed out loud. I highly recommend this book for anyone wanting to simply be entertained. Absolutely one of Ms. Holden's ...

Wickedly funny, surprisingly sad, and with a few startling twists in the tale.
Real estate wizard Hugo Fine and his wife Amanda attend birthing class only to encounter Amanda's nemesis, Alice, and Alice's husband Jake. The expectant mothers had met previously when they worked for an American magazine and thoroughly despised each other. The hatred does not abate during the prenatal course. The couples' differences are summed up in their birthing plans. Jake, editor of the ...

"Azur" don't like it
A quirky English reporter at the Cannes Film Festival -- the makings of a fun novel, right? Wrong. Wendy Holden misfires badly in "Azur Like It," a tepid Brit-chick-lit nove. Saddled with an offensively dumb heroine and a boring plot, it has only a few moments of over-the-top color. Kate Clegg toils at her thankless job at the Slackmucklewaite Mercury (known as the "Mockery") in a small ...
