Extraordinary Work!
The Emperors' Album is an extraordinary work because it contains Mughal miniatures from one of the greatest collections in the world: The Hagop Kervorkian Collection. Consisting of 50 leaves, 39 of which date from the 17th century, this book will astond you particularly when you understand the intricate work involved in the execution of these watercolors. Brimming with georgious color ...

It's not Greek to me...
Many Westerners see the historical split between East and West in Christendom in 1054 as creating a monlithic 'East'; whereas the Western church split into a myriad of sects, from the Western perspective, the East seemed fairly uniform. In fact, nothing could be further from the truth, as increasing attention in history, culture, and language studies complement the study of religion in the ...

A great handbook for Persian students
This book is the only one of its kind for anyone who wants to learn about Persian poetry in the original language. The selection of poets is generous, including practically all of the great names but also many lesser known authors. Most helpfully, there is a very complete vocabulary at the end of the book. This spares you the need for the monumental Steinglass dictionary which is hard to find, ...

Best for the intended purpose
Thackston's book is one of the best out there for learning Persian. Admittedly, there aren't too many books out there. This book is the best if you're taking a course in Persian, are a heritage speaker, or otherwise have an elementary grasp of the fundamentals. While Lambton's book is much more thorough, Thackston spares us the dense grammar as well as the use of superfluous, hyper-technical ...

The Hikam
This book is actually a true rendering of the great Shadhali Master! The Key to Salvation was the "iffy" book as to if it was really the work of Ibn Ata'ullah. If you do not know who this great Muslim Scholar is, get this book. Apply it, read it, use it , share it, learn it! I highly recommend you to go over this text with a Shaykh who has ijaza to interpet it, and teach it, since the ...

Mesmerizing
Unless you marry into the British Royal family, it is virtually impossible to ever personally view all the paintings featured in this book (I believe Windsor Castle displays only one painting per year). This book is the next best thing. How else can one marvel at the equisite design, detail and color presented in these Mughal paintings? While the text is written in the usual art history academia ...

Miniature painting at its best
I would recommend this book for serious folks interested in the art of Mogul Miniatures. Jahangir was a very special king and this book sheds light on the magic of the time period. It is a big and physically heavy book but such a joy to read. You can glimpse into the interests and lives of the royality and experience their lives in detail. The authors have gone into alot of research and there are ...

Masterpiece
Babur, a descendant of both Timur and Genghis Khan, was a truly remarkable man: a soldier and a poet, an inspirational leader with a deep appreciation for the beauties of nature - and a sensitivity that seems striking to us in a warrior of his undoubted stature. His memoirs are a detailed, entertaining, and highly personal view of a changing world. In leading his followers into northern India, he ...

Rumi - The Greatest Poet of the "intoxicated" Sufi School
It is the translation of Fihi Ma Fihi, which is full of Rumi's discourses. It sort of dispells all notions of "sufism vs islam" rather sufism is Islamic Mysticism in the truest sense and Rumi explains why the outter conformity to the Sharia (Sacred Law)is very important (i.e. the religous dispensations that are given to mankind through the last of the revalatory Porphet, according to Islam; ...

Already know a Semitic language?
This book is PERFECT if you already know a Semitic language such as Hebrew, Aramaic, Syriac, Samaritan, Akkadian... YOU ALREADY KNOW 80% OF KORANIC GRAMMAR, and about 30% of the roots. You need to focus on the new material. Most Arabic textbooks ease students into Arabic grammar by distributing basic forms across several chapters--i.e. 2nd person pronominal suffixes in week 5, 3rd person in week ...

Useful, but not entirely as intended
I'm independantly studying Syriac by working through Thackston's grammar, which, while it could use some improvements, does a decent enough job of providing the basics of Syriac grammar. In working through Thackston having a key against which I could check my answers was an entirely desireable thing, however, (and I'm not sure if this is due to a discrepancy in version or not)I found that many ...

Nearly Indispensable
If you plan on using Thackston's text to teach yourself Arabic, this answer key is nearly indispensable. The answer key is virtually free of mistakes. And, when used in tandem with the teaching text, the student should be able to understand the grammar involved in each sentence that he comes across. I only have one mild complaint about this answer key: I wish the Arabic font had been a point ...

Clear and Fluent Translation
The translation is clear and fluent. Having both texts and a vocabulary is very helpful for the student of Persian. The previous reviewer seems to have a personal beef with Thackston. The only two books he has reviewed are by Thackston. You would figure if he didn't like one he wouldn't buy the other.
