A rare treat from a talented historian
A native of Fresno, California, William B. Secrest lived in the San Joaquin Valley. A veteran of the Korean War, he returned home to earn a B.A. in education. He served as art director for a Fresno advertising firm for many years. His interest in history was a sideline, but as his knowledge grew he began researching and writing his own articles in the 1960's. He eventually began writing about ...

California Badmen
This is truly one of my favorite William B. Secrest books. I say this simply because I have never before heard of any of the characters in the book. All of them were scoundrels but fascinating to read about nonetheless. Mr. Secrest filled the book with wonderful, never before told tales set in old California. A great way to discover the past. Hard to put down, a great read.

Will be the standard biography for years to come...
By necessity a biographer of legendary California Ranger Harry Love must deconstruct numerous myths surrounding the man Walter Noble Burns called the Robin Hood of El Dorado, the undeservedly romanticized Joaquin Murrieta. Such an author must also tell of the brief history of the California Rangers, and of the lawless atmosphere of the early years of California statehood. Distinguished ...

A sad era of California history well told
This history deserves to be better known. They didn't teach this in school or college when I was growing up; and when traveling to the various historical sites and museums in the state you'll see few references to the many sorry episodes well told in this excellent book. The book is broken into eighteen chapters. The first briefly sketches the history of the California Indians to 1850. The ...

It was another time. Deadly earthquakes, steamboat explosions, floods, train wrecks, and other tragedies were a part of everyday life in nineteenth-century California. Yet, the men and women of the day licked their wounds, mourned their dead, picked up the pieces, and plunged ahead to build a great prosperous new state that took its place in the forefront of our great Union. This is their stories, in their own words. First-person accounts of the ...
