Andrews' Diseases of the Skin: Clinical Dermatology (James, Andrew's Disease of the Skin)4 reviews
William D. James, Timothy Berger, ...

Saunders, 2005

EXCELLENT NEW EDITION
Forget the hype about Bolognia, this is the best book on clinical dermatology out there today. Written by three of the top clinical dermatologists in the country, there is a unity of writing and approach and and a consistent high quality level that you don't get with texts with hundreds of co-authors (many of whom are in training themselves). There is also a refreshing aspect that this book is ...

Asthma for Dummies5 reviews
William E., MD, MBA Berger

For Dummies, 2004

A great first asthma book
I was skeptical of the name. However, I leafed through it (and many other asthma books) in a brick and mortar store before I bought this book. And I am so grateful! It's easy to read, but doesn't shy away from the technical and biological concepts you should know. It has nice diagrams for those of us who need the visuals to understand somewhat complicated biology. I feel so much more ...

The NPR Curious Listener's Guide to Opera3 reviews

Perigee Trade, 2002

How You Can Get Into Opera Without Being A Snob
National Public Radio is an institution with a legacy in America. All the issues brought up in their broadcasts is of common interest to all Americans. When NPR put their label on this publication written by William Berger and with a great introduction by tenor Placido Domingo, I was hooked. This is a very easy-to-follow, informative introduction to opera for those who would'nt even consider ...

Wagner Without Fear: Learning to Love--and Even Enjoy--Opera's Most Demanding Genius16 reviews
William Berger

Vintage, 1998

Come on...loosen your collars scholars. This book is good.
I am a young music student and I checked this book out to introduce myself to Wagner's operas. I think this book is fantastic. I also think it is a bit unfair that people nag the book for not being academic enough, for trivializing the meaning of the opers, etc. etc. It seems to me the book only attempts to be an INTRODUCTION to Wagner's operas, and in that sense, he does a great job. The list of ...

Puccini Without Excuses: A Refreshing Reassessment of the World's Most Popular Composer7 reviews
William Berger

Vintage, 2005

Puccini with Many Excuses - Not That He Needs Them
William Berger has written a book for operatic neophytes (as he did in his previous books 'Wagner Without Fear' and 'Verdi with a Vengeance') who want to learn more about opera in general and about Puccini in particular, and yet who have little background with which to understand a full-length book about the life and works of a single composer. I am no operatic neophyte, but I learned much from ...

White: Whiteness and Race in Contemporary Art
David Roediger, Patricia Williams, ...

Center for Art and Visual Culture, UMBC, 2003

Over the past 20 years, the cultural and scholarly discourse around race has exploded to include the study of whiteness and white privilege, representing a radical shift in the way we think and talk about race in the United States. Since the advent of the modern civil rights movement, people of color have usually been responsible for leading the debate and discussion about race and racism, forced to evaluate the status of their race in relation ...

Verdi With a Vengeance: An Energetic Guide to the Life and Complete Works of the King of Opera8 reviews
William Berger

Vintage, 2000

A Vivid and Genial Guide to Genius
William Beger's "Verdi with a Vengeance" is a triumph of music writing: accessible, informed and passionate. For the newcomer to the breadth of works by the great composer, this guide is a godsend, as Mr. Berger lays out the history of each opera, the story behind its plot and, most important, what makes each one special. He doesn't preach, but his enthusiasm makes a reader -- and a potential ...

Andrews' Diseases of the Skin: Clinical Dermatology7 reviews
Richard B., M.D. Odom, William D. James, ...

W.B. Saunders Company, 2000

Required reading for derm residents!
I just read this new edition from cover-to-cover in preparation for the dermatology boards and I am very impressed! The new edition is updated not only in therapeutics but also in the latest in genetic defects underlying the genodermatoses that the boards love so much. It concisely covers clinical dermatology in a very readable format. One thing it lacks is an organized chapter on therapeutics.
