The two sides of Hal
Henry IV remains one of my favorite Shakespeare plays, even though the tragedies and comedies get far more attention and seeming appreciation than do the histories. As an English major, I examined Henry's (Hal's) character, and I focused on his development from a somewhat foolhardy young man into a self-assured, even manipulative prince. It is hard to say which of these Hal truly is, or if he is ...

Next Best Thing to Being There
The format of text and audio CD is a remarkable and excellent opportunity to enjoy Shakespeare in many ways. I recently saw Patrick Stewart in Macbeth and hearing other interpretations of the play added a new dimension and enrichment to the live performance. This Sourcebook is an outstanding tool for classroom use, stimulating interest among students in the high schools and Universities. What a ...

Because of Sourcebooks my 15 yo son asked for more Shakespeare for Christmas!
I have a pretty typical son except that he is homeschooled. Sourcebooks' Macbeth left my son with a deep understanding of Shakespeare and his style of writing; so much so that he asked for another for Christmas - and yes - now he is enjoying "Julius Ceasar" for his own sake! If you or your child has to read a Shakespeare book for whatever reason, make sure you either use or have for reference ...

Magical!
One of Shakespeare's most enjoyable works, "A Midsummer's Nights Dream" is the story of four lovers (either loved, in love, or both) who travel into an "enchanted" forest, filled with magical fairies who play tricks on them and even themselves. Meanwhile, a hapless stage production prepares for a performance at the Duke's wedding. All storylines lead to an enjoyable resolution climaxing with the ...

A great way to get the most out of your Shakespeare
As someone who reads Shakespeare only with a lot of prodding, I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed reading this version. A vast improvement on the books used when I was in high school, with the text on the right and the "translation" on the left, Sourcebooks expands on the information in a very readable form, chock full of pictures to add to the enjoyment. And a CD bonus! I'm looking ...

Still the best
This was the text for my college Shakespeare classes over 20 years ago (different edition of course) I still have it and still use it. A wonderful book for students and those who want not only the complete works but some well written and authoritative information about Shakespeare and the world in which he lived and wrote. The texts of the plays are well foot-noted and the type is easy on the ...

Don't anticipate a dry account of the play here
Don't anticipate a dry account of the play here, for ROMEO & JULIET: BRINGING THE SHAKESPEARE PAGE TO LIFE is packed with visuals and interest, even including a cd of great scenes from the Renaissance Theatre production. Photos from notable productions and a compelling audio with narration by Sir Derek Jacobi bring the classic play to new life. Diane C. Donovan California Bookwatch

A popular play in an edition fabulously rich in helps
This play is best known for the St. Crispian's Day "Band of Brothers" speech given by King Henry just before the battle at Agincourt. It is a powerful speech that rallies people at all times and everywhere. Sir Lawrence Olivier made a film version in 1944 during WWII and Kenneth Branagh made another as recently as 1989. You can count on there being more versions. Epecially so when computers ...

Theatrically informative
The Cambridge editions are well edited academic editions but what sets them apart is their relationship to theatrical performance. As a diretor or actor working on the play, these editions offer great background information into theatrical practice and past productions . Productions are discussed from the ancient past through the modern day. They are remarkably current and their essays on staging ...

Four Comedies
This book contains the four "best" comedies of Shakespeare, along with an excellent foreword by Joseph Papp. For each play, it contains a very well written introduction (one that is not only on the play, but links each of them together), Shakespeare's original source material (example: "A Merry Jest of a Shrewd and Curst Wife Lapped in Morel's Skin" for "the Taming of the Shrew"), and well ...

Great Book for the Price!!
For the price, you couldn't ask for a better introduction to typography. This book looks and feel great! It is well designed-very clear and straightforward. It is well written, give numerous helpful examples and tips and guides you through the information using pictures. I've read a good amount of type books and this one stands out as being one of the most helpful books on the subject.

Replaces Hamlet as my favorite Shakespeare play.
Cleopatra may be a somewhat ambiguous female character, but I totally loved her, and Bill's portrayal of her. I don't know if he expected the reader to judge her, but I suspect not. The harshest criticism of her comes from Octavius Caesar, who himself doesn't do a single noble thing throughout the whole play. She is fully aware of the fact that she is a sensual, passionate woman- which has no ...

The best
This is the best of the Macbeth audio recordings that I've ever heard. Since I teach this play twice a year for the past twenty years, I've had the opportunity to pretty much hear them all, and I don't think any of the others compare. In fact, all of the Caedmon audio Shakespeare series are excellent, even the more obscure plays. (You should listen to the Caedmon recording of Coriolanus with ...

Great edition of a great play
I really enjoyed reading this edition of the play. Each scene is proceded by a summary of the secene and followed by commentary on the scene, and there are notes alongside the text explaining unusual words/phrases. As an actor, I have been reading Shakespeare for quite awhile, and I still found this book very helpful. If you are new to reading Shakespeare, I particularly recommend this because ...

Cambridge School Shakespeare: Nice Explanations for the Lay Reader
Note: This is a review of the particular "Cambridge School Shakespeare" edition [Edited by Rex Gibson, Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2000] of As You Like it and not a review of the play itself. This edition (a) contains the unabridged play and (b) tries to explain and elucidate Shakespeare's play to teenagers of the age of maybe 15-17. It clarifies difficult language, highlights the ...

Tragedy!
Hamlet This play, of course, is perhaps the best known in all of English literature. Taking it's inspiration from lesser plays and tales of the same name, Shakespeare crafted the characters, dialogue and plot into a timeless tale of betrayal, the quest for justice, and ultimately a hollow victory. This play, in short, is a downer. I will speak daggers to her, but use none. Of course, it really ...

To thine own self be true ...
NOTE: THE FOLLOWING CHIEFLY PERTAINS TO THE NEW FOLGER LIBRARY EDITION. William Shakespeare's "Hamlet" is arguably the most famous play ever written in the English language; it presents the world with questions and characters that have been the subject of thespian and scholarly debate ever since the Prince of Denmark's first appearance on the stage of London's Globe Theatre. Probably written ...
