Funny, I roared with laughter all the way through this book
Sad to see sort of so-so appraisals of Cook's work. In film he was often a genius too, I think of "The Wrong Box" (where, in fact, it's Peter Sellers that comes off a bit lame) or his brilliant portrayal of the psychotic British PM in "Whoops, Apocalypse!" I remember him explaining to his cabinet--deadpan-- that British industry is suffering because of sabotage by pixies. (Michael Moore should ...

August "Garry" Herrmann Not just a book on Baseball
August "Garry" Herrmann A Baseball biography. "Just completed the book and found it great reading. The combination of sports, history and politics in a fast paced anecdotal style made for all the ingredients of a great story. I learned a lot and began to realize that as far as the Queen City is concerned, the more things change the more they remain the same. Just some of the characters. But ...

3.0 is STILL better than 3.5
I wouldn't listen to anyone that claims the "new and improved" 3.5 is any bit "new and improved". 3.0 is truly the right blend of D&D tradition and sound game mechanics. 3.5 is a pile of garbage house-rules for actual D&D crafted by a new batch of "limited" designer minds. This book is D&D 3rd edition, no other.

Medieval World View
This recently updated (2003) survey of Medieval history from about 0 AD to 1500 AD is by two long-time professors at the State University of New York, Cook and Herzman, who also tag team in a number of popular video lectures for The Teaching Company, which is where I first learned about them. This is easily one of the best surveys I have read, comparable with Morris Bishop's The Middle Ages, ...

A Time to Know
A Time to Know is a powerful life journey that incorporates issues of politics, economics, and religion. William Cook starts out with a brief summary of his family history and brings it back to himself and his childhood. His blue collar back ground was particularly touching, especially when he discusses the symbols designed to separate humans across social class lines (i.e. size of houses, ...
