William Faulkner's Absalom, Absalom!: A Casebook (Casebooks in Criticism)1 review
William Faulkner

Oxford University Press, USA, 2003

Very good if you like this sort of thing...
I told my duaghter that I finished a great book, "Absalom, Absalom", and that now I was going to read a book ABOUT that book. She gave me a look, as if she never heard of anything so strange. For literary scholars and the academic community, I'm sure this line of thinking is naive, but for many readers, a book of critcal analysis is just wierd, nerdy, or painfully boring. Well, I like ...

As I Lay Dying: The Corrected Text (Modern Library)190 reviews
William Faulkner

Modern Library, 2000

Homegoing
One of the most important writers of the twentieth century in any country, William Faulkner could tell a rousing tale. Check your collective memory. You're sitting around the campfire and the the storyteller begins. When it is Faulkner, expect the unexpected. As I Lay Dying. As Dead I Am Carried to My Homeplace. The first sentence: "Jewel and I come up from the field, following the path in ...

Collected Stories of William Faulkner18 reviews
William Faulkner

Vintage, 1995

Wonderful
After reading "A Mule in the Yard," "That Will Be Fine," and "That Evening Sun" I was reminded of why this guy is one of the greatest storytellers ever. I know, his writing can be dense and even a times nearly unintelligible, but patience and concentration pays off with Faulkner. And his use of point of view is amazing.

The Sound and the Fury : The Corrected Text193 reviews
William Faulkner

Vintage, 1987

Only The Serious Need Apply
William Faulkner compels his readers to think, and sometimes to think mightily. This is one of his books that underscores mightily. The reader will be richly rewarded in availing himself of this masterpiece.

Light in August (The Corrected Text)76 reviews
William Faulkner

Vintage International/Random House, 1990

Faulkner's Best (One of them, anyway)
This "Absalom,Absalom", and "Go Down, Moses" are my favorite novels by Faulkner. "Light in August" has the advantage of being his most readable book. I will let you in on a little secret, though. I have found that Faulkner is much better to LISTEN to than read straight. I'd read several of his books when I discovered my local library had a number of tapes and CDs of his work. Those read by Mark ...

Absalom! Absalom!
I wrote a paper historical truth in Absalom! Absalom! in graduate school and decided to revisit the novel. The edition I purchased through Amazon is the one I used 35 years ago and consequently has some associations for me. I am pleased with the condition of my purchase. Thanks.Absalom, Absalom!: The Corrected Text (Modern Library)

The Sound & the Fury (Norton Critical Editions)16 reviews
William Faulkner

W. W. Norton & Company, 1988

Great But Difficult Novel
This is perhaps the most difficult novel written that's worth the time to read. I'd STRONGLY suggest you buy Volpe's book on Faulkner's Novels to read along with it first. Volpe breaks down the points at which a different charecter takes over the narrative. After that, try it yourself, but Volpe is the best guide for the person new to Faulkner's harder(hardest)work. The Norton Edition has a great ...

LIGHT IN AUGUST1 review
William Faulkner

Random House, 1959

Tour de Force in American Literature
I read Light in August as a 30-something adult, having skipped it over on my summer reading lists during school. I'm glad I waited. This book is way too powerful and complex for a High School mind. Maybe wait until after college too! I am looking forward to the chance to read it again. This book is a massive tour de force, inexplicably underappreciated in American literature. In LIA, ...

A Summer of Faulkner: As I Lay Dying/The Sound and the Fury/Light in August (Oprah's Book Club)71 reviews
William Faulkner

Vintage, 2005

Challenging and thought-provoking
These novels are not to be read for sheer pleasure, but rather for the challenge and the depth. They are not easy to read, though *Light in August* is the easiest of the three. The prose is so difficult at times that I needed to reread again and again. I had to stop and take numerous breaks because my brain got twisted around. I strongly suggest getting research materials from a university ...

L'Arbre aux Souhaits : The Wishing Tree (French and English Bilingual Edition)1 review
William Faulkner

French & European Pubns, 2003

Amazing story!
I bought this book in France while waiting below the Louvre for a friend. It has since become the book that returns to my thoughts when I have a spare moment. I recommend reading this story to your children when they are old enough to understand such an amazing story. It all begins on a birthday morning...

INTRUDER IN THE DUST (PICADOR CLASSICS)41 reviews
WILLIAM FAULKNER

PICADOR, 1989

Perfectly wrong but with perfection
We are in the South, in a rural city and area. A crime is committed, a white man is shot dead and an old black man is arrested for it on Saturday night, red-handed, because he was next to the dead shot body with a gun in his pocket. This black man has had a past of refusing samboism. He always behaved in a non standard way for a black man in the South. No question is asked. A lawyer is called by ...

Absalom, Absalom!1 review
William Faulkner

Modern Library: NY, 1964

Faulkner Does it Again.
Though Faulkner has an impeccable writing style and can tell a story like no other, I have found this story to be in the shadows of other more well known novels by him. Perhaps for a simple reason; I am not a Faulkner Fanatic. However, enjoyers of Faulkner and of great American literature alike will find this book to be a good (but hard!) read.

Go Down, Moses22 reviews
William Faulkner

Vintage, 1991

City of Man, City of Nature
The Southern landscape of field and swamp and woods becomes a prominent character throughout these rich, complex stories. Indeed, I'd imagine most of Go Down, Moses could provocatively serve an environmental history class. 'Pantaloon In Black' is perhaps my favorite here; this haunting tale, full of powerful, archetypal imagery, is mentioned far less often than some of the other, more well-known ...

THE REIVERS (PENGUIN MODERN CLASSICS)24 reviews
WILLIAM FAULKNER

PENGUIN BOOKS LTD, 1970

The complexity of Faulkner in a straight forward novel
William Faulkner is one of my all time favorite authors, one who I greatly admire and love. His writing always seems fluid in its movement from paper to mind, giving up such a full picture of what is going on. The Reivers is yet another novel that draws you in and makes you feel as though you are right there with Lucius, Boon and Ned as their adventures lead them to Memphis. All, of course, ...
