35 Years out: Still the best in the field
Baumol and Bowen made this 1966 book (now in reprint) the first and still most thorough treatment of the economics of cultural nonprofits in the US. I have sought data on the field, and all current analysis points back to Baumol: both their analysis of the impact of rising prices on nonprofits and the original research that they so carefully document.

A rare book that offers facts as well as rhetoric
The debate over Affirmative Action is nearly always ill-informed, polemical, and fraught with racial symbolism. While many reject The Shape of the River because they are unable to look past their personal prejudices, those that consider it with an intelligent and open mind find a great deal of strong statistical evidence to support the well-reasoned conclusions of the book's authors. Those ...

Telling it like it is
The authors have collected an enormous amount of data and presented it lucidly and tellingly. That alone is worth the price of the book. However one feels about elite institutions using different admission standards for recruited athletes, the authors should be given credit for illuminating the facts. Most of the criticism I have seen has been of the "Kill the Messenger" variety, from people ...
Inside the Boardroom: Governance by Directors and Trustees

An important discussion of directors' responsibilities.
Mr. Bowen gives an important perspective about the responsibilities and duties of members of boards of directors. He shows a deep understanding of the role of directors of both for-profit and not-for-profit organizations. The not-for-profit director's importance is often overlooked, so this book is a welcome addition to the literature about boards of directors.

A bible for the boardroom
This is a remarkable and valuable book. Remarkable in the depth and intensity of its coverage of the subject, and valuable as a road map for directors and potential directors, not to mention CEOs who may be confounded by their relationship with their boards. Bowen was a Professor of Economics who became President of Princeton University, then of the Mellon Foundation, and later Ithaca Harbors. He ...

Great for graduate and some undergraduate work.
I am busy so I will not fill you full of a bunch of reasons this book is so great because it was a bit thick to read start to finish. However, I found it nicely referenced and cross referenced on an assortment of topics current in the area of educational sociology. I was able to easily access what I needed and found it helpful for finishing up my undergraduate thesis work. I think if I pursue ...

The Game of Life is intelligent and timely.
Higher education is full of many injustices. Prior to a 1991 antitrust ruling, Penn, Harvard, MIT, Princeton, Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, and Yale conspired together to ban all merit scholarships and set tuition artificially high. When Princeton awarded $1000 research scholarships to top students, the Overlap met in January 1987. Princeton denied that it had violated the Overlap pact. ...

Anthology of Experiences
I did enjoy the reading of this particular book as it includes many essays and articles by prominent CEOs of American universities. Many Alma Maters who have/had these people as the CEOs are sharing their thoughts and aspirations with us. I would really recommmend the book to students and professors who are taking/giving the course in higher education administartion.
