Japan's Managed Globalization: Adapting to the Twenty-First Century (East Gate Book)
M.E. Sharpe
, 2002
As Japan moves from a "catch-up" strategy to a post-developmental stage, it is changing its actions and reactions both in terms of international political economy and domestic policy issues. The current changes in Japan can best be understood as following a path toward "permeable insulation." Japan's government and economic system continue to insulate domestic businesses from full competition and the rigor of market forces, but this insulation ...

So everyone had their reason? That doesn't justify anything.
I'd say this is a bad case of over-research or losing objectivity. It's a formidable work that he's put in. He has interviewed numerous top officials in the Bank of Japan, Ministry of Finance and Politicians to dig into the current Japanese recession. But the conclusion that he draws is as follows; a. BOJ were under pressure, so they couldn't do anything. b. MOF was busy, and they had no ...

William W. Grimes
Cornell University Press
, 2008
Since the Asian Financial Crisis of 1997-98, East Asian economies have sought to make themselves less vulnerable to global financial markets by transforming the regional financial architecture. With Japan as a leading actor, they have introduced initiatives to provide emergency financing to crisis economies, support the development of local-currency bond markets, and better coordinate currency policies. In Currency and Contest, William W. Grimes ...

A mysterious arrival and departure, a story of friends.
A poignantly told memoir of a season spent in the company of a somewhat bohemian chicken. I gave a copy of this book to my vet after we tried for several months to save the life of one of my pet chickens. She hadn't much experience with chickens, more so with the fanicier hookbills often found in one's the parlor, so I wanted her to know what it was like to know a chicken on a more personal ...

Entertaining and informative.
With an emphasis on the cocktail, Straight Up Or On The Rocks is a solid and entertaining history of drinking in America. Grimes' appreciation for a good cocktail is evident, and while he has his opinions on certain drinks, you understand why he has them. This could be very useful for restuarant and bar professionals. The drink recipe section in the back, while short, is very good.

In Family Ties, the relationships that bind families are explored via nearly 60 contemporary artists. Alice Neel paints mother daughter portraits; Nicholas Nixon ...

Better as a history than a recipe book
Grimes traces the history of that uniquely American invention, the cocktail, from its origins in colonial times to its current revival. He is particularly entertaining when reviewing extinct drinks -- ever wonder what a shandy is? -- but the storied bartenders and venues are also a pleasure. The second half of the book is recipes. For these, you're probably better off with a bartender's ...
