Sadly out of print
This book is a walk-through of fantastic hypothetical vistas around planets, stars, and even galaxies in the cosmos. While seriously dated (pushing 20), and aimed at an audience with little or no astronomical background, the art is amazing and inspiring; this book did more to fire me up for astronomy as a child than any other. This is art you can daydream with. Highly recommended.

Who Knew History Could Be So Fascinating?
Usually most history books are as dry as the dust with which they deal. But with THE HISTORY OF EARTH, Hartmann & Miller tackle with vast success a topic that is only marginally understood,at best, by the layman. And make no mistake; this history is for the layman, but one who has a desire to know where we come from and where we may be going. Part of the learning process involves digesting a ...

A fascinating look at the Red Planet
A Traveler's Guide to Mars is well written and quite fascinating for anyone with an interest in the planetary geology of Mars. Hartmann breaks down the history of Mars into three geologic eras (Noachian, Hesperain, and Amazonian) based on the amount of cratering on the Martian surface. From there, he explores each one of these regions in detail. From the majestic Mons Olympus volcano and ...

A Solar System Reference Book for the Rest of Us!
The first time I read this book was when one of my graduate teachers asked me to review it. While he thought it to basic for graduate-level work, I have used this book ever since, for students of all ages. Well written and illustrated with black-&-white pictures as well as the author's own well-respected artwork, it covers so much in such a small book it's hard to believe. The appendix of ...

Fascinating, well-written survey of the worlds of the solar system
This excellent coffee-table book is a fascinating exploration of the solar system. It is gratifying to see this book, now in its 3rd edition, revised regularly to reflect the many continuing new discoveries of the last 25 years. This survey, written for the layman, thoroughly covers all of the important worlds of our solar system. It also discusses our solar system's formation and what we ...

A Unique Book on Auditory Processing
This book fills a large gap between signal processing and psychoacoustics. Standard signal processing books have in-depth coverage on Fourier transform, filtering, etc., but say little about what various signals mean to our ears. On the other hand, psychoacoustics books lack necessary mathematical rigor and insight for people who want to understand underlying computations. The book is written ...

Great for beginners
This is a great book for the beginning astronomy student. It covers nearly every topic relating to astronomy, from the earth itself, to our solar system, to cosmology, though none of them appear to be in great detail. I read this book for a class, but would have read it for fun.

An exceptional first hard-SF novel
It's 2030 in Mars City. Crusty old scientist Alwyn Stafford is out on a solo Mars-buggy trip in Hellespontus. Now he's overdue, and his young protege "Carter Jahns" (nudge, ) is leading the search. Annie Pohaku, a reporter newly-arrived from Earth, tags along. Stafford isn't found before his air runs out, and is presumed dead. Carter finds the abandoned buggy. Oddly, it had been ...

La Frontera's Most Desolate Splendor
A few years ago I was lucky enough to take a trip along the Camino del Diablo. We had two vehicles, plenty of water and food, and full gas tanks. We signed the papers that we would not hold the United States Government responsible for anything that happened to us, and then set out from Ajo to as far as we could go, finally stopping within sight of the Tinajas Altas Mountains after an overnight ...

Paul Cushman (1767-1833) is recognized today as one of the founders of a regional stoneware industry that stretched throughout the Upper Hudson Valley of New York State. When Cushman moved to Albany around 1800, local stoneware production was limited to a few potters. His decision to open a pottery works "half a mile west of the Albany goal [jail]" at the beginning of the new century resulted in a long-lived and successful business. It also ...

This is THE book to read on space exploration.
This is the finest illustrated book on space exploration I have ever come across. The knowledge of the authors is impeccable, the illustrations are stunning, and the captions are evocative. Though most visuals are "artists' impression" of the scenario, the imagination behind the art is mind-boggling. Whether it is Jupiter as seen from Io, or Saturn looming over mysterious Iapetus, the pictures ...
