First Liberty Religion and the America

Excellent examination of religous liberty in American life.
In this measured and fluently written essay, the author reviews the origin of the linked doctrines of religous liberty and church-state separation in American life by focusing on the contribution of three architects of these doctrines; Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and Roger Williams. Miller is very successful in presenting these men without the anachronistic accretions of 19th and early 20th ...

Essential
This handbook is an essential tool to anyone in the environmental field. There are always new additions, so having a recent copy helps but it's not necessary since the environmental laws don't change that much. I would recommend getting a newer edition when a major law has passed so that the reader can understand the impact the new law will have on their community. A copy can usually be found ...

Required reading for Southern apologists
Anybody who ascribes to the idiotic notion that Southern secession was all about states' rights and really had nothing to do with slavery needs to be reminded of two antebellum events: the Fugitive Slave Act, which was legislation that solely benefitted slaveowners while being a complete affront to the notion of states' rights; and the gag rule in Congress from 1836-1844, which essentially ...

Excellent guidebook to Silicon Valley
This is an excellent book to describe all thinkable crosssections of Silicon Valley through interviews in the social science methods and through writing by prominent figures in Silicon Valley. The only drawback I found is that the book has too rich contents for a reader to read through casually. I strongly recommend this book to those serious readers who are engaged in Silicon Valley, ...

a revelation
Arguing About Slavery has a very difficult subject to make live, what William Lee Miller calls the "tedium and sublimity" of republican debate. The historian's duty to be evenhanded even when faced with the moral pit of slavery doesn't make the job any easier. Yet, Miller handles these problems with aplomb and, more, handily succeeds. At about 500 pages, Arguing About Slavery is concerned ...

William Lee Miller's Brilliant Exploration of the morality of Abraham Lincoln shines with gem-like clarity
William Lee Miller is an academic who writes in an understandable style. In "Lincoln's Virtues" the historian examines in clinical detail the ethical cosmos of the railspiltter from the West who rose to the White House in the nation's darkest hour. Miller shows that Lincoln held two principles as sacred to those virtues enunciated in the Declaration of Independence: the Union which was ...

A great book by William Miller on our greatest President's tumultous and defining term of office
Wlliam Lee Miller's new book on US President Abraham Lincoln focuses entirely on the 1861-1865 period when Lincoln was chief executive and the nation suffered through a horrendous Civil War. Miller is an eloquent author and an expert on Lincoln. His book is a combination of narrative laced with a detailed study of several of the moral issues the Kentucky railsplitter faced in office. Among these ...

This is THE book to read on space exploration.
This is the finest illustrated book on space exploration I have ever come across. The knowledge of the authors is impeccable, the illustrations are stunning, and the captions are evocative. Though most visuals are "artists' impression" of the scenario, the imagination behind the art is mind-boggling. Whether it is Jupiter as seen from Io, or Saturn looming over mysterious Iapetus, the pictures ...

Sadly out of print
This book is a walk-through of fantastic hypothetical vistas around planets, stars, and even galaxies in the cosmos. While seriously dated (pushing 20), and aimed at an audience with little or no astronomical background, the art is amazing and inspiring; this book did more to fire me up for astronomy as a child than any other. This is art you can daydream with. Highly recommended.
